2.3. Routing Protocols
Bearing the fact that it is imperative for a packet to hop multiple times to reach the final destination, a routing protocol is used. The routing protocol has two major purposes :
• selection of routes for various source-destination pairs and
• delivery of messages to the correct destination
The second purpose is in abstract direct and utilises a variety of data structures called routing tables. This project deals with finding and selecting routes and delivering the packets to the intended destination.
2.3.1. Path Cost
Hop count is the developed metric that is used to calculate the best path between the source and the destination. However, another entity called the cost, can be used to determine the lowest distance path between source and the destination. Source Routing
Source routing[9] involves each packet carrying the complete route that the packet should take through the network and determining the routing decision at the source. It is beneficial in the terms that it avoids routing loops however each packet requires an overhead.
2.3.5. Flooding
Quite a lot routing protocols utilise broadcast to distribute control information data and thus flooding is used to send all this data from one node to all other nodes in the network. In flooding, the sender node sends its data to its neighbouring nodes which are within the transmitting range. This information is broadcasted within the network from one node to another, until the packet reaches all the nodes within the network. A sequence number is used to ensure that a node relays the packet only once and this number increments for every new packet the node sends.
