In network engineering, Quality of Service (QoS) plays a crucial role in managing and enhancing the performance of enterprise networks. XYZ Company aims to improve its network quality and is considering the implementation of QoS techniques like traffic shaping and traffic policing (Fulber-Garcia, 2022). In this post, I will explore the pros and cons of both techniques to offer a thorough understanding of making an informed decision.

On the other hand, traffic policing ensures effective bandwidth control and simplicity but may result in packet loss, limited traffic smoothing, and potential negative impacts on user experience (Daniel, 2022).

A combination of both techniques might be the optimal solution, leveraging the strengths of each while mitigating their weaknesses. For example, traffic shaping can be used for critical, latency-sensitive applications, while traffic policing can enforce bandwidth limits on less critical traffic. This balanced approach can enhance overall network performance and ensure a fair distribution of resources (SK Wish, 2020).
