2.2.2 Central Processing Unit (CPU) The CPU is the brain of the computer. It is responsible for all the calculations carried out in the entire computer system. Furthermore the speed of the CPU effects the overall performance of the computer system. The CPU is available in several architectures delivering various levels of performance. Few of them are
• Embedded CPU architectures
• Microcomputer CPU architectures
• Workstation/Server CPU architectures
• Mini/Mainframe CPU architectures
• Mixed-core CPU architectures There are two main components in the CPU the first is known to be the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) this unit performs the arithmetic and logical processes of the computer system. The second is the Control Unit (CU) this unit it responsible for extracting instructions from the memory and decodes and implement them, while calling the ALU whenever necessary. Apart from these components there are few other components within the CPU such as Registers, Cache Memory and Internal Bus. Registers are high speed data storage areas within the CPU. All the data are usually processed after it is depicted in a register. …show more content…
The CPU has quick access to the cache memory than to the Random Access Memory. This memory is usually integrated within the CPU of is places outside and is connected to the CPU via a separate bus. Storing program instructions of frequently accessed software is the main function of this memory. The faster the CPU access these instructions the faster is the overall performance of the entire system. The processor first checks the cache memory to process the required data. If the relevant data are not present in the cache memory then the processor checks for the relevant data in other data storage
