TCP/IP
TCP/IP is a suite of communication protocols which are used to interconnect device on the networks to the internet. This can also be made into a private connection as an intranet. This protocol specifies how data is exchanged using the internet which provides end to end connections. This will then determine how the exchange items should be broken into packets, transmitted, received, routed and addressed to a destination. TCP/IP doesn’t need much central management with the ability to recover if any device on the network were to fail and is also designed in order to make a network much more reliable. TCP is to do with the messaging part and will make sure that all the devices are in agreement before the exchange is able to take place. To complete this you must firstly send your computer’s identification to the web server which the server will then acknowledge and send back its own identification. Your computer must acknowledge the identification of the web server otherwise they would not be able to communicate. This is done on layer 4 to make sure that the separate devices are able to communicate with one another. The second part of the protocol, IP, defines the way to address and route the packets to ensure that it will reach the correct location and not get lost on the way and go to someone else’s device. Every computer gateway will check the IP address and whether it matches the original IP. It will then decide whether to forward the message or not. One advantage of TCP/IP is the addressing. This because the TCP/IP assigns each device on the network with its own, unique IP address so it can always be identified which allows you to send information to a specific device easily. The implementation of an IP address is called IPv4 which is soon to be released by IPv6
