This server have the responsibilities like listening to requests, reading configuration file and managing resources. These constituents contain protocol listeners for example http.sys, facilities such as windows process activation service (WAS) and world wide web publishing service (WWW) .
3.1.1 Protocol Listeners (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
The job of Protocol listeners is to receive protocol-specific requests and then send it to IIS for processing. After processing the protocol listener, it is responsible for sending the request back to the requesting clients. For example, when a client makes request for a web page, the http listener, http.sys, takes that request and sends it to the server and then returns the results back to the client. The http listener is the part of networking sub system of operating system and is employed as a kernel-mode driver [10].

The listener adapter is responsible for setting up communication between protocol listener and WAS. When the listener adapters receive the configuration information passed by WAS, they configure their corresponding protocol listeners for listening to the requests pertinent to them. The configuration information read by WAS from the .config XML file includes: global configuration information, application pool configuration, application configuration, protocol configuration and site configuration. In case there is change in the ApplicationHost.config file, WAS is sent a notification and it updates the listener adaptor [10]. The management of application pools and worker processes also comes under the responsibility of WAS. When a request is picked up by listener adaptor, WAS finds out whether a worker practice is running or not. If the application pool belonging to the requesting application already has a worker process that is receiving requests, then the listener adaptor passes the picked up request to that worker process for processing. If no worker process exists in that particular application pool, then WAS needs to start a new worker process so now the listener adaptor will pass the request for processing to
