Explain why data security is important? Describe the rules for creating a good password. What is data encryption and why is it important to data security? Explain why backup and recovery is important. What is disaster recovery? Can the techniques for backup and recovery be used for disaster recovery? Data security is important because it provides risk assessment and strategies in case of potential threats of information. Information such as financial records, bank account information, and/or personal information. When creating a strong password a user must have at least 8 characters, does not contain your name or birthdate, a complete word, and has to be different from previous passwords and not easy for anyone else to find out. What is database administration? What are the advantages of having data administration and database administration departments? What is metadata? What is a data dictionary? Data administration is a process where data is monitored, maintained and managed by a data administrator or organization. It allows an organization to control its data assets, processes and interactions with applications. Database administration is a set of activities performed by a database administrator to ensure that a database is available when needed. It’s an important process in any organization that is dependent on one or more databases. An advantage of a data administration department because it defines the process used to manage and maintain data in an organization. An advantage of having a database administration department is that it ensures maximum up time for a database so when needed its available providing periodic troubleshooting and monitoring. Metadata describes the process of a particular set of data being collected and how it is formatted. It’s for understanding information stored in data warehouses and how it become increasingly important in XML and web applications. A data dictionary is a collection of descriptions of data objects in a data model for

...VPN access control model for a large scale company. * This policy will support remote access control for systems, applications, and data access. Remote access Defined Remote access for employees is deployed by using remote access VPN connections across the Internet based on the settings configured for the VPN Server, and the following additional settings. The following diagram shows the VPN server that provides remote access VPN connections. Domain/Network Config: For each employee that is allowed VPN access: * The network access permission on the dial-in properties of the user account is set to Control access through NPS Network Policy. * The user account is added to the VPN_Users group in Active Directory. To define the authentication and encryption settings for remote access VPN clients, the following remote access network policy is created in Network Policy Server (NPS): * Policy name: Remote Access VPN Clients * Conditions: * NAS Port Type is set to Virtual (VPN) * Windows Groups is set to VPN_Users * Calling Station ID is set to 207.209.68.1 * Permission is set to Grant access. NPS policy settings: * On the Constraints tab, under Authentication Methods, for EAP Types select Microsoft: Smart Card or other certificate. Also enable Microsoft Encrypted Authentication version 2 (MS-CHAP v2). * Or SSTP, L2tp/IPsec, PPTP, IKEv2 Access control model/ policy: This model would support Role based access controls and allow mandatory access control to be...

Nt2580 Unit 3 Assignment & Lab

...NT2580 Unit 3 Assignment & Lab Unit 3. Assignment 1 - Remote Access Control Policy Definition There are three key parts I will have to take into account while designing a Remote Access Control Policy for Richman Investments. These three parts (Identification, Authentication and Authorization) will not be all for the Remote Access Control Policy, I will need to include the appropriate access controls for systems, applications and data access. I will also need to include my justification for using the selected access controls for systems, applications and data access. The first part I need to implement for this Remote Access Control Policy is Identification, which is defined in this sense as: physical keys or cards, smart cards, and other physical devices that might be used to gain access to something. What needs to be done for the Remote Access Control Policy is a group member policy needs to be setup which uniquely identifies each user. Users should be identified by rank with higher ranking users requiring more authentication. Each individual user should be assigned to a group based on rank with special permissions. Using this system for Identification will make our company more secure in day to day operations. The second part I need to implement for this remote access control policy is Authentication, which is defined as: what you know or passwords, numeric keys, PIN numbers, secret questions and answers. For remote access, there must be...

...Joseph M NT2580 Mr. Lewis Unit 7 Encryption Types 1. (ECC) Elliptic curve cryptography - is an approach to public-key cryptography based on the algebraic structure of elliptic curves over finite fields. Elliptic curves are also used in several integer factorization algorithms that have applications in cryptography, such as Lenstra elliptic curve factorization. 2. commonly used encryption and authentication algorithm and is included as part of the Web browsers from Microsoft and Netscape. 3. (3DES) Triple DES - a mode of the DES encryption algorithm that encrypts data three times. Three 64-bit keys are used, instead of one, for an overall key length of 192 bits (the first encryption is encrypted with second key, and the resulting cipher text is again encrypted with a third key). 4. Diffie-Hellman key exchange - is a specific method of exchanging cryptographic keys. It is one of the earliest practical examples of key exchange implemented within the field of cryptography. The Diffie–Hellman key exchange method allows two parties that have no prior knowledge of each other to jointly establish a shared secret key over an insecure communications channel. This key can then be used to encrypt subsequent communications using a symmetric key cipher. 5. International Data Encryption Algorithm (IDEA)- is a block cipher. 6. Data Encryption Standard – Encryption cipher that is a product cipher with a 56bit key consisting of 16 iterations of substitution and transformation. 7. El Gamal...

A reflective XSS attack a type of computer security vulnerability. It involves the web application dynamically generating a response using non-sanitized data from the client. Scripts, like JavaScript or VB Script, in the data sent to the server will send back a page with the script. 3. SQL Injections can be used to enter the database with administrator rights.  Best way to avoid this is using Java in websites. 4. methods, including character scrambling and masking, numeric variance and nulling, rely on an array of built-in SQL Server system functions that are used for string manipulation. 5. Well co-ordinated and regulary audited security checks is the best way forword. 6. . There has been considerable debate comparing the security attributes of open source and proprietary software (Anderson, 2002). However, for a careful interpretation of the data, rigorous quantitative modeling methods are needed. The likelihood of a system being compromised depends on the probability that a newly discovered vulnerability will be exploited. Thus, the risk is better represented by the vulnerabilities which are not yet discovered and the vulnerability discovery rate rather than by the vulnerabilities that have been already discovered in the past and remedied by patches. 7. Based...

Three vulnerabilities and Solutions related to client configurations. Advisory Number: 2719662 Microsoft is announcing the availability of an automated Microsoft Fix it solution that disables Windows Sidebar and Gadgets on supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7. Disabling Windows Sidebar and Gadgets can help protect customers from potential attacks that leverage Gadgets to execute arbitrary code. Customers should consider the following ways that an attacker could leverage Gadgets to execute arbitrary code: Microsoft is aware that some legitimate Gadgets running in Windows Sidebar could contain vulnerabilities. An attacker who successfully exploited a Gadget vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take complete control of the affected system. An attacker could create a malicious Gadget and then trick a user into installing the malicious Gadget. Once installed, the malicious Gadget could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative...
