OSI Model
OSI model is a way of sub-dividing a communications system into small parts called the seven layers. The definition of the OSI model is Open Systems Interconnection model. The seven layers of the OSI model are divided into the host layer and the media layer. On the following paragraphs I would discuss the objective of establishing the OSI model and which end of the layers is closest to physical hardware and which is closest to applications.

The number one layer of the OSI model is the physical layer. This layer defines the electrical and physical specifications for devices. This includes the layout of cable specifications, repeaters, network adapters, voltages, pins, and more. The major functions of the physical layer are establishment and termination of a connection to a communications medium. The modulation or conversion between the representation of digital data in user equipment and the corresponding signals transmitted over a communications channel.

The second layer of the OSI model consists of the data link layer. The data link layer consists of the WAN protocol architecture and the LAN architecture. Both WAN and LAN services arrange bits, from the physical layer, into logical sequences called frames. Not all physical layer bits necessarily go into frames, as some of these bits are purely intended for physical layer functions.

The Network layer is the third layer of the OSI model and also the layer that conclude the media layers. The network layer performs network routing functions, and may also perform fragmentation and reassembly, and report delivery errors. Routers operate in this layer sending data throughout the extended and making the Internet possible. The network layer connects computers with routers and servers.

Transport layer is number four and lives up to its name. The transport layer is responsible for

Ntc 360 Network and Telecommunications Concepts

...NETWORKING Networking Paul F. Scheelk NTC/360 Network and Telecommunications Concepts Instructor: Anthony Bruno University of Phoenix 1. What is the range of usable IP addresses for the following IP subnet? What is the broadcast address for the subnet? 10.150.100.96/27 The range of usable IP addresses is 10.150.100.97 – 10.150.100.126. The first and last addresses are not usable and cannot be assigned to hosts as one is used as the broadcast address, 10.150.100.127 and 10.150.100.96 is the address for the sub network. When initially determining the usable addresses the /27 provides the information that the first 27 bits are network and the remaining 5 are host addresses. The subnet address would be 255.255.255.224. 2. Describe and explain the difference between circuit bandwidth and network throughput. Focus on networking. Communication networks using Ethernet or other protocols distinguish throughput as the average rate of successful packet delivery over a communication channel. The information is passed over a physical or logical link such as Cat5, 5A or 6 or media such as coax and fiber. It is also measured over a wireless network. It is usually measured in bits per second (bit/s or bps), and/or data packets per second or time slot. Throughput is the actual speed that the data is being transmitted. Bandwidth on the other hand is the maximum speed in which packets can be sent or received. Bandwidth is almost always a higher rate than throughput. 3. Research...

...Rotary dialing relies on a completely different concept. When using rotary dial, an electrical signal is applied an interrupted a number of times equal to the number the user wishes to dial. For instance, to dial a number 8 a telephone would have to interrupt the electrical signal 8 times. A pause signifies the completion of the first dialed numbered and the system prepares to receive the next number. Voice and Data Communication Systems Voice and data communication systems are the backbones of modern business organizations. Without these systems, business would quickly crumble due to competitors’ ability to leverage such systems to communicate changes in the market and other required business information very quickly. If my business had more than one employee and more than one location, then getting information from one point to the other without a voice or data network could potentially take long enough that my company would lose out on profits to my competitors. In short, voice and data communication systems enable businesses to survive in what has now become a world that moves at the speed of light. In this article, I will describe the voice and data communication systems I use to perform my job as an online reseller. The Telephone System I pay a monthly service fee to AT&T so that my home telephone is allowed to access the PSTN. The PSTN is a circuit switching network, which means a dedicated circuit is opened for a communication until that communication is closed by...

...Before the board of directors could make a decision on whether to sell more shares and, if so, how many, the board members felt they needed more information. Specifically, they would like a forecast of the average number of people (family members, guests, etc.) who might attend the pool each day during the summer with the current number of shares. .:. The Cascades Swim Club has 300 stockholders, each holding one share of stock in the club. A share of club stock allows the shareholder’s family to use the club’s heated outdoor pool during the summer upon payment of annual membership dues of $175. The club has not issued any stock in years and only a few of the existing shares come up for sale each year. The board of directors administers the sale of all stock. When a shareholder wants to sell, he or she turns the stock into the board, which sells it to the person at the top of the waiting list. For the past few years, the length of the waiting list has remained relatively steady at approximately 20 names.(…………….)
