Do X-Rays Requested by Triage Nurses Decrease Waiting Times?

...Do X-rays Requested By Triage Nurses Decrease Waiting Times? Research in Health and Social Care Introduction: Since 1991 when the patient’s charter (Department of Health 1991) was introduced, Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments have been under pressure to see, treat and discharge patients within a certain time period. In 1991 75% of walking wounded who presented to the department had to be discharged within one hour. It was subsequently changed in 2004 when the government decided that 98% of all patients attending an A&E department should be in the department no longer than four hours (Department of Health 2004). And again in 2011 when the department of health introduced the clinical care indicators that relaxed the target to 95% seen, treated and discharged or admitted in 4 hours (Department of Health 2011). Triage nurses within the accident and emergency department are one of the first people to assess the patients who present with an injury or illness. The patient’s condition is assessed and their need for how quickly they require treatment is prioritised. Triage nurses are usually experienced A&E nurses who have many years A&E experience (Dolan et al 2007). Patients are then placed in queues to await assessment by a Doctor or Emergency Nurse Practitioner. Once seen they are then put in another queue to await x-ray if necessary before waiting again to see the doctor/ENP that will interpret their x-ray and decided on the best course of treatment...

Evaluating a Website for Credibility

...Evaluation of Website for Credibility: American Association for Nurse Practitioners Aman Verma Chamberlain College of Nursing NR500: Foundational Concepts and Applications September 18, 2013 Evaluation of Website for Credibility: American Association for Nurse Practitioners American Association for Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is a national professional membership organization for NPs of all roles. The purpose of their website is to support and transform the dynamic roles of nurse practitioners (NPs) as prime providers into patient focused healthcare. Being in the family nurse practitioner program fueled my interest to this website. I aspire to enhance my knowledge by investigating and educating myself on further roles of NPs in the community, acute care settings, administrative positions and tertiary care centers. The response to my discussion thread this week regarding legislations and regulations for nurse practitioners (NPs) grasped my attention for AANP as it is equipped with the information. The search engine that was used to locate the website is the Google. The domain name for AANP is aanp.org and the Uniform Resource Locator page address is http://www.aanp.org. American Association for Nurse Practitioner (AANP) is governed by a designated Board of Directors, which consists of 7 Executive Committee, 11 Regional Directors and 2 members. The board members are highly qualified NPs with Doctorate to Masters in Science degrees with an NP certification. Most of the...

Nurse Practitoner as a Career

...Personal Career Analysis: Nurse Practitioner November 5, 2014 Personal Career Analysis: Nurse Practitioner “They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” This quote said by Maya Angelou is very applicable to a nursing career, especially for a nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner is an advanced registered nurse that coordinates and provides patient care. This field is all about helping others. The study of anatomy and physiology of the body is very interesting, and this career is all about knowing how the body works and treating it. Many people who chose this career get inspired by their own doctors or nurses. One might also choose this career because of a past experience of seeing how this career affects other people’s lives. Just like any job in the medical field nurse practitioners have a very interesting job. They see new things every day. The main, most interesting nature of the job is to help patients by examining and treating them. A nurse practitioner can do a lot of things a physician can do. They can diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medications for common acute illnesses, and order tests like X-rays and EKGs(“Nurse Practitioner,” 2014). The work environment for nurse practitioners can vary. Some work in a hospital, physician’s offices, outpatient care centers, and also in schools. In order to be a nurse practitioner one must first obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing, known as a registered nurse. After becoming a RN one...

Grand Canyon University’s FNP program will properly prepare me, allowing provision of evidenced-based care to an array of patients with varying health complexities. Improving delivery and access of healthcare to underserved populations, assisting with chronic disease management, while simultaneously, imparting a positive impact on health through education and outreach, encompasses both my short and long-term goals. Acceptance into your program of study will afford me the opportunity to establish a sound foundation upon which the above goals can be achieved. Comparisson Paper

...choosing college football at a private college over attending a junior college this last fall, a choice I soon came to regret. In a short summary of my first college experience, I jumped into a big decision without thinking enough about it and I am now attending Parkland College and working at JT Walker’s a sports bar in Mahomet, Illinois. I give you an example of a hard choice I have had to make in my life recently because in the next couple of semesters at Parkland College I will need to make another tough decision. Even though I have my major picked out already which is Nursing, I still need to decide whether or not I want to discontinue my education after I get my associates degree to be a Registered Nurse, or to continue on with my education and become a Nurse Practitioner. There are many things to consider when choosing a career, even if they are similar occupations it does not always mean they are the same in every aspect of the job. A few of the topics I will be comparing between my current job and the two I just listed in my essay will be location, salary, environment, and responsibilities. Almost everybody who is out of college and working in their career has the one job that they despise more than any other. For me that job just so happens to be at my current place of employment. I have been working at Jt Walkers restaurant and sports bar in Mahomet, Illinois as a bar back since October of 2012. This is not the first time that I have worked at Jt’s, I also worked...

Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success Stacy Maahs HCS/504 Jill Grundy June 6, 2014 Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success My personal plan for success as I pursue my master’s degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Program is multi-leveled. Among other things, I believe stubbornness is one of my attributes; this in itself may turn out to be quite helpful to me over the next three years. “With self-regulated learning, students use several specific subprocesses to achieve self-directed learning goals in real-world contexts. Effective self-regulated learners select, structure, and create environments that optimize their learning” (Kumrow, 2001, p. 140). To me, this simply means that my success in this program is up to me. My ability to control my feelings of stress and anxiety, as well as juggle being a mother, wife and full-time employee will determine my success to an extent. I am certainly motivated to succeed. I plan to discuss my goals, challenges to meeting them, and ways to improve my communication skills in my pursuit of being a master’s degree prepared FNP. Personal and Professional Goals I have never prioritized setting personal or professional “goals” for myself, yet I would not profess to have wandered haphazardly through life either. I have an internal set of high standards that I maintain for myself and those around me. I was raised by two parents in the Midwest with an incredible work ethic; being taught...

Nurse Practitioner Role Development

...FNP Role Development Katy Lehigh Concordia University Wisconsin FNP Role Development For five decades nurse practitioners have been providing safe, effective, quality primary care services to all ages and populations. As a testament to their commitment and excellence nurse practitioners are being chosen as provider of choice by millions of Americans. Becoming a skilled provider is a dynamic process that occurs over time. Effective role development is essential in becoming a dynamic, compassionate, and knowledgeable clinician. Political Perspective Not all threats to our nation derive from foreign enemies. Our nation suffers within our own borders due to chronic illnesses, rising medical costs, wasted resources, poor coordination of care, and a lack of nationalized healthcare. “America’s health care system is in crisis: It is a ‘sick care’ system, not a health care system” (Blumenthal, 2012). The current healthcare system is fragmented, mismanaged, and poorly financed. Americans receive healthcare insurance through various means, such as government run programs, like Medicare and Medicaid, privately through their employer, private pay, or the purchase through an open market. Regardless of the many healthcare options the United States has to offer, 14.7% of the population remains uninsured (Shi & Singh, 2015, p. 199). “The existence of multiple payers makes the system cumbersome” and poses a billing and collection nightmare for healthcare providers (Shi &...

Family Nurse Practitioner

...Family Nurse Practitioner Melissa Rodden South University NSG 5000 Role of Advanced Practice Nurse: Family Nurse Practitioner April 18, 2015 Abstract The issues of patient safety and the increasing scope of family nurse practitioners in medical practice have been dealt with in this paper. National Patient Safety Guidelines are an important tool to help standardize the patient safety procedures. The role of the family nurse practitioner in helping patients is unquestionable and they are the cornerstones of modern medical practice. Introduction Today’s family nurse comes with in depth knowledge of medicine and is board certified. The responsibilities that have to be fulfilled by such a practitioner embrace health as a way of living and they focus on both treatment and prevention. In recent times, with transitional care gaining widespread acceptance the family nurse practitioner is being granted more decision-making authority although in certain states they are still under a physician’s supervision. The National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) were put forward by the joint commission for the first time in 2002. The aim of introducing these goals was to deal with patient safety issues and specify certain prerequisites for accreditation (Fairman et al., 2011). Discussion The 2015 NPSG’s provide great scope for a family nurse practitioner to improve...

Nurse Practitioner

...ROLES OF A NURSE PRACTITIONER Sabine Dorsainvil NSG5000 South University The role of a family nurse practitioner is a fundamental portion of the future of healthcare. The role is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever growing population increases. The need for the role of family nurse practitioners will grow too. The role of the family nurse practitioner, the ability of the FNP to be able to transition into their role. The scope of the nursing role has transcended overtime to allow for registered nurses to practice in more advanced autonomous roles. The first Nurse Practitioner program was initiated at the University of Colorado in the 1970’s as professors sought the need to prepare nurses for expanded roles as it was evident the capacity of nurse’s ability to assess and determine the necessary treatment options for children and families. (Jansen, Zwygart-Stauffacher, 2009) While the definition of the advanced practice nurse role continues to evolve, the construct of the role is birthing a growing population of nurse leaders and expanding the framework of nursing care delivery. A family nurse practitioner must have graduated from a graduate program obtaining a Master’s degree or higher and receive certification from the certifying...

Problem Issues with Older Adult Patient Education and Interview

...WHY I WANT TO PURSUE A CARRER AS A NURSE. I want to become a nurse because I like being able to help those who are in need and try to improve what is probably been a bad day for them. I was born and raised in Cameroon, where poverty is very evident. Throughout my life, I have seen all different kings of people in poverty, may it be infants, children, elderly people and even disabled people. Everyday I would see people on the streets begging others for money just so they could treat their ailing relatives. Whenever I saw them, I felt so weak. I wanted to help them, yet I did not know how since I was just a child. It wasn’t until I moved here in the United States that I realized health care is truly the right path for me. Moving here made me realized how other countries like Cameroon are in great need of health services. It made me more aware of the situation and now that I am older, I know that I could do my part in those in needs in all over the world and Africa especially. Seeing the poverty and lack of good health care gave me more than the desire to become a nurse, it gave me the passion and determination to achieve that carreer. I believe that passion and determination are important elements in becoming a nurse which I posses all skills Once I stared researching a career in nursing I realized that there were a lot more types of nurses than I had originally thought. This confused me because there was a nurse for almost everything! Then I finally decided...

Development of the Future of Nursing

...Change, Advancing Health” (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation 2011). At its core the report was a mandate to renovate the current health care system, and at the same time introducing nursing as an essential piece to this renovation. Within the IOM’s report are a few key points that outline their vision of the future of heath care (2011). If instituted, these key points will have major and long term affects on the nursing profession. The report places a higher responsibility on the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to take on the role of a Primary Care Provider (PCP). In order to accomplish this goal it will be necessary for nursing as a profession to place a greater emphasis on higher education at all levels, and innovators within nursing will be required to lead with the new changes that are to come. Primarily within the ACA is a focus on the reduction of health care costs. One of the ways the IOM attempts to address this issue is by using nurses to the maximum degree of their...

Future of Nursing

...healthcare is dependent upon the role nurses play in the care of the patient. A committee was formed between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine to address the needs of reformation of nursing. The purpose of the study was multifold. The study looked at ways to reform our healthcare system to meet the challenges of safe, quality patient care while maintaining affordability and accessibility with the help of a transformed nursing profession. The transformation of the nursing profession focuses on three main areas. The areas include education, nurse practice setting, and the nurses’ role as a leader. The purpose of nursing education is to provide the student or nurse with the information one must possess to safely and effectively take care of a patient. The committee formed between the RWJF and the IOM state that “nursing education needs to be transformed in a number of ways to prepare nursing graduates to work collaboratively and effectively with other health professionals in a complex and evolving health care system in a variety of settings” (Shalala, Bolton, Bleich, Brennan, Campbell, Hanson, et al., 2010, p. 164). Education must provide a transition from student to nurse and from advanced registered nurse practitioner to the clinical setting. The committee calls for more nurses to have their baccalaureate degree and to also obtain an advanced degree or a doctoral degree. Continuing education for nurses is of vital importance and should include...

Nurse Practitioner

...PYaidelyn Alonso SLS1125: Matos 4/20/12 Nurses: “Caring Today for a Healthier Tomorrow” Growing up in a house hold of medical personnel, such as my mother and my aunt and other close relatives has really inspired me to become a Nurse Practitioner, but most of all my inspiration has come due to the death of my father. I want to help patients who may have false hope, who may think that there’s nothing anyone can do, I want to give patients hope, and I will devote my life to make a difference in the medical field. Although it won’t be easy, I know there will be obstacles I have to overcome, I think anything is possible if you persevere and if you commit yourself to do something that you love. At the end of the day you made at least one person’s life more enjoyable and filled them with hope, that’s what I’ll be thinking every night before I lay my head on my pillow. A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced training in diagnosing and treating illnesses. Nurse Practitioners prescribe medication which usually RN’s cannot do, as well as treat illnesses, and administer physical exams. The difference between an NP and a physician is that they focus on prevention, wellness and education. To be more specific Nurse Practitioners may specialize in either Neonatal Care with new born and baby’s or Geriatric Health, Adult Health, Oncology, Family Health and Psychiatric/Mental Health. Personally I love trauma centers and the Emergency Room, I’m quick on my feet and I do...

Personal Goals

...Critical Care Registered Nurse credentials and Advanced Nurse Practitioner specializing in critical care, whereas my personal goals are to be physically fit and an amazing mother. After moving to North Carolina from Washington, I knew I might not work in the same area as I did back home. While in Washington I enjoyed working as a critical care nurse on a Progressive Care unit and was studying for my PCCN credential. Upon arrival to North Carolina I found myself in an unfamiliar territory. I was in a large community but, with limited hospitals nearby, it made for a difficult time to set myself apart from applicants for the limited critical care positions available. I could demonstrate my clinical and communication skills, as well as my ability to work in a team environment, and to my surprise, obtained an ICU position. I have been working a 34-bed ICU for two years and the vast of knowledge gained has been tremendous. I believe it is time to put my knowledge to the test. I would very much like to have my CCRN credential. I have met the requirements needed to qualify for the examination, and must prepare, plan, and study for this examination (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits, 2007). With this credential comes some financial gain in the workplace, but the prestige and respect and self validation gained is the ultimate prize. Ever since I attended nursing school I have dreamed of advancing my career to become a nurse practitioner. I have been a critical care nurse for six years and...
