Informative Article The informative article A United Approach to the Prevention of Pressure Ulcers informs the reader, step by step, as to what a pressure ulcer is, which patients may be prone towards a pressure ulcer, how to prevent a pressure ulcer, what to do if after steps taken towards prevention the patients gets a pressure ulcer anyway, treatment of an ulcer and finally what dressings are effective after treatment (Gray and Hampton, 2015). The key points of the article are that pressure ulcers (PUs) are preventable, but incidences of pressure ulcers continue to increase, patients with pressure ulcers die two to six times more than a patient without pressure ulcers, and pressure ulcers are preventable with proper care, such as utilizing the correct mattress and making sure turns are done faithfully. The article goes further and concludes that there are many methods that support pressure ulcer prevention and, with good training—knowledge of what a pressure ulcer is, how it occurs and how to prevent pressure ulcers there can be a reduction in pressure injuries overall. This article was subject to double blind peer review. Criteria Secondary source articles are usually based on articles that are primary sources, or in other words, research articles (which are primary) where the information can be new or groundbreaking. When an informative or secondary article is written the authors may use the research articles as primary sources of information used. When an informative article is written the reference page would cite research articles. Informative articles provide information on a topic and can be specific or general in nature, may refer to research studies (but not always) and common language is usually used so the subject is easily understood. In this informative article there is specific information related to pressure ulcers, and the language used throughout is common and probably on a sixth grade level, therefore easily understood. Also there are numerous references to the actual research on the subject of pressure ulcers: “Also, in a study by Lyder et al (2002), implementation of a comprehensive prevention program resulted in an 87% decrease in pressure ulcer incidence”. (Gray and Hampton, 2015 p. 2). One of the ways of identifying an informative article is that the article may refer to and/or depend on research based studies. In the sciences, journal articles written by experimenters reporting the results of their research are primary documents. This informative article also uses easily understood language throughout, such as this definition of pressure: “Pressure is where the weight of the body squeezes the tissues between a bony prominence (such as heel, elbow, sacrum or ischials etc.) and a hard surface (such as bed, chair or, in the case of heels, the floor)” (Gray and Hampton, 2015, p. 3). Research Article The purpose of the research article Reducing Pressure Injuries in Critically ill Patients by Using a Patient Skin Integrity Care Bundle (InSpire) was to test an interventional protocol called InSpire, which was developed and tested in an Australian intensive care unit (ICU). The study was conducted over a 12 month period and used patients admitted to the ICU, expected to stay more than 24 hours, who were over 18 years of age. The research used a before and after design: patients receiving the intervention (InSPiRE protocol) were compared with a similar control group who received standard care. The intervention, InSPiRE, is a bundle of processes for preventing pressure injuries by targeting key areas of nursing clinical assessment and documentation, hygiene measures, repositioning, and strategies for preventing pressure injuries in critically ill patients in the ICU. It was based on the best available evidence. The demographics were similar in both groups and the intervention group, receiving the InSPiRE protocol, ended with a lesser prevalence of pressure injuries, and a reduced amount of pressure ulcers that developed over time. The conclusion of this article was that constant assessment of the patient’s skin and risk for pressure injuries as well as putting into place specific prevention measures are crucial to preventing pressure injuries (Coyer, Gardner, Doubrovsky, Cole, Ryan Allen. & McNamara). Criteria This research article meets all the criteria for a primary source of information. The headings are typical for research, i.e. ethical considerations, participants, sample, data analysis, hypotheses, conclusions, and included statistics and tables. Both of these articles were peer reviewed and both included the definition of a pressure ulcers, but the informative article continued with the teaching aspect and the research article led with the definition and then showed the research parameters and results. Both articles were informative but the research article broke new ground by testing hypotheses and the informative article used evidence based practice to entreat the reader.

Adolescent Vaccination

...Introduction The discussion of infant immunisation to various diseases has brought about much debate within the modern health systems surrounding the side-effects. It has been established that through the research of credible databases that childhood immunisation is of vital importance in the way infants are protected from diseases, and the benefits far outweigh any risk of side-effects. Vaccination is designed to create immunity by administering weakened diseased cells into an individual to stimulate the immune system to develop immunity to the harmful pathogen (Phac-aspc.gc.ca, 2014). Vaccination plays an important role within society of protecting humans and eradicating harmful diseases (Vaccines.gov, 2015). This essay will identify and...

Doula and Midwife Care

...Painter Subject: Research Analysis Two articles selected for review derive from The Journal of Perinatal Education. The first article I read was titled, “Evidence Based Maternity Care: Can New Dogs Learn Old Tricks?” It was written by Merilyn Curl. Curl is a Certified Nurse Midwife, Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, and a Fellow of the American College of Childbirth Educators. The article illustrates the efforts of reform applied to the founding cultures and purpose given to a modern day Certified Nurse Midwife. Assessing the Situation She begins unfolding her story at the time of hire with a concise perspective of the culture and practices of the community hospital she worked for. Curl describes the time old “Nursing Process” as assessing the situation, making a plan, then finally evaluating the outcome. She follows this same progression in her attempt to restructure nursing practices at this community hospital. She very clearly presents her personal experience as what practices (whether or not they were best practices) she was seeing in the nursing community verses research based best nursing practice. One piece of evidence she presents for this is how “This meant that labor nurses were assigned only one patient allowing the time to provide continuous labor support. Despite strong encouragement to remain at the bedside, most nurses remained tethered to the central monitoring station” (p.235). This observation strengthens the argument that research based best practices...

Mechanical Ventilation

...head: ACCOUNTABILITY OF NURSING PROFESSIONALS: WEANING Accountability of Nursing Professionals: Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation Samantha Madrid Grand Canyon University Abstract This paper will discuss the weaning of patients off of a mechanical ventilator. It will look at the problems associated with prolonged intubation vs. premature extubation, and what healthcare professionals can do to assess a patients readiness to begin the weaning process. A patient care scenario will be given and an explanation of how nursing practice can evolve with the knowledge from this study will be shown. The accountability of the nursing professional in regards to mechanical ventilation will be visited as well. Accountability of Nursing Professionals: Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation “Mechanical ventilation refers to the use of life-support technology to perform the work of breathing for patients who are unable to do so on their own.” This is the definition of mechanical ventilation according to Cook, Meade, and Guyatt (2000). They performed a study to determine the optimal time to wean a patient off of mechanical ventilation. When weaning a patient you have to find the right time to extubate. Prolonged mechanical ventilation can lead to nosocomial pneumonia, cardiac associated morbidity, and possible death. However, extubating a patient too soon may result in having to reintubate which can result in the same illnesses as prolonged intubation. “Research to date suggests that the...

Predicting the risk of unplanned readmission or death within 30 days of discharge after a heart failure hospitalization. American Heart Journal, 164(3). 365-372. Retrieved from: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/771215_print This article sought to find an appropriate model to predict the risk of unplanned heart failure readmissions. The primary outcome from chart reviews also included death of heart failure patients within 30 days of discharge. The study looked at Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) models and the LACE+ index, to mention two of many that looked at prediction ability. The LACE+ index is a model that looks at length of stay, acuity, the Charlson comorbidity score and age, to predict readmissions. They found that no one model was appropriate in predicting the 30-day readmission rates, although using a combination of the models was an improvement to that predictor. The authors are all physicians, PhDs, or have a Master’s degree- helping to establish credibility. The authors also make a statement as to the funding of the project and that they (the authors) were solely responsible for all data collection, design and submission approval writing for the project, also lending credibility to the study. Native American Medicines

...Native American Medicines Axia College University of Phoenix Native medicine has always excelled in the treatment of wounds and surgery, such as mending broken bones etc, a branch of medicine that during the pioneer era was a most barbaric torture in western medicine. Hygiene was poor and anaesthetics unknown. Barbers doubled up as surgeons. Even today Western medicine is indebted to indigenous medicine for the most commonly used anaesthetic derived from Coca .A plant that South American Indian doctors have used for this purpose since pre-Colombian times. Indeed there are numerous plants of both south and North American Native origin that have enriched modern western herbalist and medicine. However, in Native traditions it is not just the plant that makes the medicine, but foremost the power of the spirit that governs the plant. A plant as such would be considered useless unless it were gathered and prepared with due respect, prayer and rituals with which the healer seeks the support of the plant spirit to help him affect a cure. Native American Medicines: Even though, Native American Medicines have no real threat to our bodies. Are Native American Medicines better for us than Traditional medicines with no side affects because Native American Medicines have been around for years and are still being used today and Native American Medicines have no real side affects like traditional medicines do. The Importance of Team Work

...Importance of teamwork 1. Introduction As organisations continue to strive towards competitive advantage and increasingly high performance standards, collaboration and team-oriented project management are increasingly providing the flexibility and innovative potential necessary to excel. Yet in spite of the dynamic characteristics of teams in practice, many organisations fail to recognise the core determinants of a team-oriented framework, instead grouping employees into non-linked, non-dependent, individually-driven models. This group-based approach is distinct from team-specific initiatives and fails to meet the rigorous determinants of dynamism and effectiveness necessary in the modern marketplace. The following sections will draw distinctions between teamwork and group work, highlighting the opportunities associated with team-driven performance. Further, several theoretical models of teamwork will be introduced, demonstrating underlying benefits of optimised team management and goal setting. Through this discussion, a framework of organisational implications will be introduced, focusing on team-generated performance and the importance of effective team outcomes in meeting organisational goals. 2. The Teamwork Paradigm In spite of their seeming interoperability, Fritz (2014:1) emphasises that the terms ‘team’ and ‘group’ hold practical distinctions when represented in the context of enterprise management. A group, in theory, represents three or more individuals who...

Branchik1 and Tilottama Ghosh Chowdhury1 Abstract This research chronicles the changes in the understudied and rapidly evolving male market segment using two related studies: (1) a content analysis of advertisements in fifty-one years of Sports Illustrated magazine and (2) an experiment involving age-based differences in consumer ad perceptions. Both investigate changing ad values and the ethnic diversity of ad models. Results indicate that the male market is becoming increasingly self-oriented in its values orientation as a result of broad societal changes and changing gender roles. Increasing use of black or African American models in key positions indicates a growing acceptance of minorities as representations of the ideal self among younger men, who express a preference for black or African American models. This finding speaks to the increasingly multicultural nature of society and the impact of minority celebrities on American culture. The results are indicative of the power of advertising in both reflecting and facilitating societal change. Weaning Messages

...six months despite being aware of the recommendations. Delivering key messages about weaning has always been a part of the health visitors role. However, no formal, evidence based weaning intervention is currently being promoted to health visitors and advice continues to be communicated at the discretion of individual practitioners. Very little research exists on this topic, much emphasis has been placed on encouraging breast feeding as the main focus infant nutrition literature. Yet childhood obesity is on the rise and establishing healthy eating habits as a baby could pave the way for healthy eating habits later in life. This paper looks at the ways professionals communicate general messages about weaning and attempts to provide some clarity and guidance for health visitors about a humanistic intervention to educate parents about the benefits of waiting till six months, rather than using ‘scare tactics’ as to what could happen if they wean earlier. It is hoped that not only will this paper provide guidance about best practice, it will also highlight the importance of the subject and the pressing need for urgent research on the specific topic of delivering weaning advice.
