By the time of the 2004 presidential election, George W. Bush had already served as president of the United States of America from 2000-2004 and was running for reelection. Because of Bush’s experience holding the presidential office, he had a greater situated ethos than John Kerry, his opponent, who had only served as the governor of Massachusetts at that time. However, through Barack Obama’s speech The Audacity of Hope at the 2004 Democratic National Keynote Address, the gap between the pre-existing ethos of the two candidates is bridged and the audience is swayed in Kerry’s direction. Obama uses personal anecdotes to build excessive pathos which reduces the amount of logos necessary to convince the audience to vote for Kerry because the …show more content…
Obama describes how his grandparents sacrificed their home and everything familiar for their children to have the opportunity to achieve their dreams and lead a better life than they did. More specifically, Obama points out the case of his paternal grandfather, who helped his son study abroad in America instead of having to herd goats for the remainder of his life. And equivalently how then Obama’s parents used the opportunities provided in America to give Obama even more possibilities to succeed. By starting off with his narrative, Obama is able to connect with his audience by mimicking the dreams of immigrant parents and creating a similar mood to that of a “rag to riches” story. Additionally, throughout this anecdote, Obama inserts phrases such as “a magical place, America, that shone as a beacon of freedom and opportunity” (when talking about his father traveling here due to a scholarship) and “in a generous America you don’t have to be rich to achieve your potential” (when talking about the schools he is able to attend) in order to build enargeia to rally up the audience with their love for their country (1). By creating this mood through his personal story and appealing to patriotism, Obama unites the audience and sets them up to accept his claims about John Kerry without fully analyzing the rationale behind them, thus, successfully built up

I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops. If two guys were standing on a corner, I would cross the street to hand them campaign literature. And everywhere I went, I’d get some version of the same two questions. “Where’d you get that funny name?” And then: “You seem like a nice enough guy. Why do you want to go into something dirty and nasty like politics?” I was familiar with the question, a variant on the questions asked of me years earlier, when I’d first arrived in Chicago to work in low-income neighborhoods. It signaled a cynicism...

...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...
