The Ups of Downs “The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don’t have.” Woody Allen interprets it best. Many people tend to have a hard time trying to find a reason to genuinely appreciate the life they have. Being satisfied isn’t enough anymore, people desire want what they don’t have. Life does come with its ups and downs, and nothing can be guaranteed but that’s no excuse for not being happy with the life one was given. Yes, it can be tough and there are misfortunes, but perception is the key. Even though my brother has the misfortune of having Down syndrome he doesn’t let the negatives of this disorder bring him down, instead he finds happiness with the life he was blessed with. Trisomy 21, commonly known as Down syndrome is a genetic birth defect. It is the leading birth defect in America and effects about 1 and 800 babies. There can be several disorders that affect an individual. Anywhere from degrees of intellectual disabilities, heart defects, health problems, and characteristic facial features. Most of these symptoms are common in individuals that have Down syndrome. Having these affects can be extremely disappointing to a person. Just the thought of knowing you are not the same as everyone else. Most would dread on the fact that they aren’t as one would say “normal.” These facts though, show no sign of affecting my brother and the things he accomplishes day to day. He may not look exactly the same as everyone else but he lives his life like a regular 14 year old boy does. He goes to school, participates, socializes, and plays games. Besides being mentally slower than most he is a normal teenage boy. Yet I must say that watching him I can see the simple struggles he faces every day. At home even amongst the family I can see the hardships he faces. For example he talks and tries to pronounce a word like peanut butter and has to repeat himself several times for anyone to understand. I can see the frustration grow in his face from having to say it over and over because no one can really understand him. Also the difficulties he faces on trying to do things independently, for example making food. He is determined to make his own sandwich and cut it but has a hard time; I can see how upset he gets when having to ask for help. He plays video games and when there are captions on the screen he yells for someone to read them for him. He squints his eyes and twists his head back and forth similar to a dog trying to comprehend what he just heard. The simple things that people take for granted, my brother struggles to do but i can see the happiness he gets when he accomplishes something. Out in public I can see barricades he has to face. Even though he doesn’t fully look like a person with Down syndrome he still gets stared at like he is an alien. When he talks aloud people turn and look and stare as if what he is saying is a foreign language. When he interacts with people he doesn’t know, there are always two common reactions; they smile and try to understand him or they smile turn away, sigh, and ask someone what he is saying. He gets confused often and when someone doesn’t understand him he grows impatient and moody. He is not fully capable of going places alone or doing tasks all by himself, but when he tries people hover over him watching his every move. He glances up at them and if he could clearly announce what he was thinking I bet he would be saying “leave me alone I can do it myself.” Adults and children alike are cruel and say callous, rude remarks. He doesn’t have the intellectual capacity to know when someone is making fun of him straight to his face, so he laughs and pretends he understands when he has no idea what they are saying. The disabilities to talk, write, read, comprehend, and even be independent have severely altered my brother’s life. Patience and time is all that is needed to understand my brother. He has to overcome daily challenges. Life for him is far from perfect. He is limited and because of this he gets aggravated; watching the world around him do things that he can’t do. He is impulsive and is a slow learner. He has difficulties talking, writing, reading, comprehending, playing sports, and doing things that most don’t even have to try at. He can’t go out alone, or even shower and get dressed without someone’s help. He has a defect that he can’t cure, and even though he is disabled he is the happiest kid I know. No matter the situation, even when I know he is frustrated he never dwells. He doesn’t complain or mope because he isn’t like everyone else, yet it looks as if he embraces his differences and does what he can to his best ability. No one’s life is perfect and everyone must face hardships, but the sooner ones learns this the faster they can appreciate the life they were given. So the next time one considers their life is tough just imagine, it could be worse. The greatest tool is to appreciate and find happiness. For the first step to being happy, is to create happiness within yourself.

...Georgia Canales Eng-105 1/18/2011 Observation essay I like to observe things such as people, places, and things outdoors like the birds, the trees, and people doing outdoor things. So this assignment is a good thing for me. Being able to sit there and watch people and take down notes is enjoying to me. Being able to observe things such as people, place, and things is a good way to see in depth how people adapt to their everyday life. You can then see in detail, different things like fishing, raking their yards, playing with their family that people or do in their everyday life. The room is fifteen by twelve feet. The color on the walls is white. There are two windows. There is a desktop computer, a couch, a chair, and a thirty gallon fish tank. My father is watching the television while sitting on the couch. He is in the living room of my apartment viewing The Jerry Springer show. The noises in the area are the television, the fish tank, and the heating system. The noise of the fish tank is the cleaning system in it and of the heating system is that it is cutting on and off. He is drinking a bottle of water. After he finishes the water, he starts playing with the empty bottle by crushing the bottle, and taking the paper off of it. He has moments when he starts shaking his left leg and then will stop. Later he has moments were he will slouch over to his left side then he will sit back up. He has spoken to me by asking me what...

Observation Essay

...(O103) Anita Riehm A Day at the Hair Salon The day is Saturday, immediately I recognized that things were different as I struggled to find a parking spot in the tiny lot hidden just off the highway. The Hair Salon is located in an area to small too be considered a strip mall, and apparently too small to handle all of its clients cars. It is the third in a row of three shops, although the first is a former ice cream shop, the second a coffee and doughnut shop which was for rent. I knew all the drivers of the automobiles in the lot were in the Hair Salon, as the car wash across the street did not open until 9 a.m. Every Saturday morning here begins with a full parking lot. Once I found a parking spot, I was ready to begin my observation of Final Faze Barber & Beauty Salon, which specializes in all your hair care needs. I walked in to the Hair Salon looking for a corner seat. Air coming through the open door chilled the shop interior, which was filled with customers just fifteen minutes after the shop opened. The stares from those already seated in the shop’s red plastic chairs along the wall in the seating area, as well as from those in the stylist chair getting haircuts. As you wait for your turn in the stylist black chair you can look at hair magazines, read books, watch television, gossip on the hot topic for the day, and catch up on current events. The atmosphere is filled with the smell of shampoo, conditioners, hair sprays, and the hair dryers running. ...

...A Walk to Subway How does the University of Illinois enforce their “no smoking” policy? As of Jan 1, 2014 smoking has been prohibited at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Once a college or university establishes themselves as a smoke free campus it is from that point forward acknowledged by many people, especially those who hinder the act of smoking, as a cleaner, safer, and healthier learning environment to accompany its students, faculty and guests. To this day, it has been eight months since this restriction of smoking on campus was authorized at the University of Illinois, however I am positive that smoking is still very popular on campus. A week ago I saw three women “puffing away” right outside The Chapel of St. John the Divine and just the other day I saw a few University of Illinois staff members carelessly smoking right next to Florida Avenue Residence Hall. Keep in mind, these are supposed to be the ones setting the example for the students. Many colleges and universities have already established their campuses as smoke free and many are in the process of doing so. I wonder if the University of Illinois is honestly against smoking on their campus or if they have integrated this policy on the university to follow a popular trend, or to make the University seem more prestigious. Obviously they don’t seem to be enforcing this new policy. Tuesday evening as I am making my way to rugby practice an unpleasant stench smacks me in the face as I turn a corner...

Checklist - Research Methd

...DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING STUDENT NO: S147585 ASSIGNMENT ONE DEBORAH O DELL & JANE WEBB-WILLIAMS WORD COUNT: 1308 This essay will be based on the importance of observation as a tool for understanding child development. The main argument of this essay is that observation is very important, simply because the strengths outweigh the limitations. It will focus on different types of observational methodologies and their strengths and weaknesses. It will also consider the importance of observation within practice and research. An observation involves watching someone and dealing with what they do rather than what they say they do (Gillham, 2008: 1). It allows the observer to directly see and hear what’s happening (Mac Naughton and Hughes, 2008: 157). In terms of children it allows us to tune into them (Fawcett, 1996: 3) and understand what they already know. There are many different observational techniques, these include: narrative observation, time sampling, event sampling, anecdotal and diary records, checklists and rating scales (Bentzen, 2000: 84). For the purpose of this essay, only a few of these techniques will be expanded on. One observational technique which may be used to understand child development is a checklist. These are regularly used within schools to record children’s individual progress (Sharman et al, 2007: 5).They also aid practitioners in picking up on the presence or absence of specific behaviour (The Goodheart-Willcox Co 2009:59). Another type of...

Child Development

...This essay seeks to critically evaluate my role as a child observer. Drawing on two or more theories of child development, I will look at the main theoretical concept and critically evaluate in relation to my observation. First, I begin a brief description of the child I have observed and the setting in which the observation took place. Next I attempt to show my understanding of normal child development, and aspects that can disrupt ‘normal’ child development. Throughout the essay, I will critically examine and reflect on the process of undertaking my observation. And finally, issues of ethics and anti- oppressive practises will be discussed. The child I have observed was three and half year’s old girl called Sara (not her real name), of African Caribbean background and English is the only language spoken at home. All three observations took place at the day-centre she attends. The day-care centre gave me permission to observe her, but not to interact and interfere with her educational activities. As this was my first observation, I was a bit anxious about how Sara might react about me watching her, and while her parents consented about the observations, Sara did not know that I am here to observe her; it is this scenario that made me uncomfortable. I was particularly more concerned about the ethical issues of not informing Sara about the observation. One element of anti-oppressive practice is to make sure that people’s rights are not violated. Social workers must put children’s...

Pernet And Child Observation Ben Brown April 7, 2002 Report Child And Parent Behavior Observation I am almost always surrounded by the interactions between children and their parents. I hear it at my work, I hear it in restaurants, but most of all I hear it at my house. My mother owns a daycare and every night I listen parents being hit by a barrage of questions. When children are being picked up they always have a couple of questions for their parents. Children are always asking about the meal for the night or whether they can go over to a friend's house or have some body over. Every night I see 12 different children with twelve different parents and it seems that each parent acts differently then the next. When I thought of observing the children that attend my mothers daycare I decide that I should observe the interactions between the daycares "Problem Child" and his mother. The boy that I chose to observe seemed to have no respect for anyone or anything. He often made obvious lies and played practical jokes that physically hurt the other children. On the Friday night that I observed him and his mother...

How Do People Get New Ideas

...I think the essay "How do people get news ideas" absolutely relate to our course and LINKS. Working as a team is to bring people in many skills together in order to solve problems, to gather information and even to get new ideas. I found some quote that relate to this, as followed: If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an "idea" and I have an "idea" and we exchange these "ideas", then each of us will have two ideas.---George Bernard Shaw According to Isaac Asimov' essay, The optimum number of the group would probably not be very high. I should guess that no more than five would be wanted. A larger group might have a larger total supply of information, but there would be the tension of waiting to speak, which can be very frustrating. It is absolutely true. Although having a large number of people within team may provide a lot of information, it will frustrate to members. Then within the team should collect only appropriate people such as different skills. However, teams have proved that they can make many great solutions and provide several new ideas, but sometime those Ideas may be similar because they do, work, think in the same or similar environment. According to the essay, sometimes teams need to have a conference at different places such as coffee stores and someone' home to have new environment and it easier to get new ideas. To improve individual skills are also important...

Albert Bandura

...Essay 4 Pieter van Rooyen 17333652 Albert bandura can be regarded as one of the most important representatives of social cognitive learning theories. He’s theory on observational learning (learning by observing behavior) is the single most important form of learning. He argues that people learn most of their behavior through observation and only a little through direct contact. The reason for this is the complexity of most behavior, and that this can’t be learned through verbal instructions. This essay will focus on the principles of observational learning, highlight the strength and weaknesses, and also how observational learning can promote positive intergroup relations on campus at the University of Stellenbosch. Observation is a common learning tool and many, if not most do it unconsciously. The term modeling is used to describe this. This is when an observer observes the behavior of a model and then repeats the behavior. There are a few factors that influence this observational learning. They are the nature of the modeled behavior, the characteristics of the model, the characteristics of the observer, the result of the models behavior and the self-efficacy perception of the observer. The nature of the modeled behavior refers to the actual behavior. The situation in which the behavior takes place and if it is new or old behavior. New behavior attracts more attention than old behavior. The characteristics of the model plays an important role in observation learning....

Omalley's Tavern

...An Assignment Submitted by Sara Cotleur Liberty University Online Class Business 301-D04, Section 201320, Spring 2013 Deborah White vs. John Daniels and O’Malley’s Tavern Introduction The case in question is case number 82A04-8876-CV-285, between Deborah White as the plaintiff and John Daniels and O'Malley's Tavern as defendants before a mock U.S. District Court, in the Northern District of Indiana. The plaintiff’s attorneys are Amanda Babbit and Jackson Walsh while those of the defendants are Benjamin Walton and Jordan Van Meter. Mr. and Mrs. White went to O'Malley's Tavern on the Saturday, July 28, 2007, a tavern in Gary, Indiana. Edward Hard, a former fiancé of Mrs. White was also patronizing the same tavern and on seeing the two, he approached them to convey his congratulations on their recent marriage and then went back to his seat and resumed his drinks. The first defendant, Mr. Daniels, was the only licensed bartender working at O'Malley's Tavern. Mrs. White and Mr. Daniels confirmed Mr. Hard consumed four to six shots in about twenty-eight minutes after the arrival of the Whites. Thus Mr. Daniels had constructive knowledge of Mr. Hard’s intoxication. On consuming his last alcoholic drink he tried to leave and in the process tripped on a cue stick as he stood up but picked himself up. Mr. Daniel did not notice this stumbling incident and thus was not aware of the intoxication level of Mr. Hard and could not be said to have absolute knowledge on...

Observe the Community on Language Diversity

...Community Observation Community Observation Paper Mike Richardson Liberty University Summer 2014 SOCI 200-D01 LUO Professor Cole Community Observation Paper My Community Observation Paper dealt with observing the homeless issue in my community and the local Mission that is the main source of support for individuals without a home. This experience is something that I’ve witnessed from my job for the past several years, but this prospective was different because of the many different types of people I witnessed struggling with this issue. WHAT WAS OBSERVED: I observed many different individuals struggling with a variety of problems either in the form of alcoholism, drug addiction, but the main issue that seems to be the problem is mental illness. Poverty is just a symptom that results from not being able to function in society. Yes, there were families; however, this seemed to be the minority. It’s very concerning to see the children that reside in the mission and makes you wonder how do you have any advantage moving forward in life if this is your foundation. The shelter or Mission is a large facility that houses several hundred each night including women and children. There are strict rules in place to provide some sense of normality to the individuals who stay there nightly, plus to provide a degree of safety. Some who cause issues are temporary suspended from residing in the shelter and some are permanently banned due to not following the rules...

Common Sense as a Source of Knowledge

...The Weaknesses and Strengths of Common Sense and Science as Sources of Knowledge There are many sources of knowledge as the society progresses. In this case, the most controversial question would be whether or not common sense can be accounted as a reliable source of knowledge? Although both common sense and science can be taken into account as sources of knowledge, I will argue that to some extent common sense and scientific knowledge are still very different from one another. That is, scientific knowledge is much more highly valued and reliable than common sense. By definition, common sense is a knowledge that is developed from daily basis, and is primarily based on the viewer’s observation, while scientific knowledge is generated from a constant formal of testing in the real world. In this essay, I will discuss the weaknesses and strengths of common sense and scientific knowledge and defend my position for why scientific knowledge is generally regarded as more reliable and authoritative than common sense. In this section, I will discuss the main strengths of common sense and science. Arthur E. Murphy, an American philosopher, believed that the ability to learn by experience is the most fundamental factor in our intellectual progress. On one hand, namely, common sense is both common and sensible. That is, common sense beliefs can be easily observed by individuals and it is rather comprehensible. Science, on the other hand, uses a rational methodology. Also, along with that...

...FIELDNOTES: A GUIDE FOR RESEARCHERS Fieldnotes: "The observations written by a researcher at a research site, during an interview, and throughout the data collection process" (FW, 501). I. REQUIREMENTS Much of the hard work of ethnography happens in the observations and fieldnotes. At times, you’ll feel as though it’s tedious to take fieldnotes; however, taking detailed notes gives you a set of data from which to look for patterns and ideas. In order to complete your field notes successfully, you will need to: General Requirements Spend at least one hour a week observing your community; While you’re observing, write substantial (3+ pages of observation weekly) field notes. Take time after you’ve observed to write meaningful, thoughtful questions and reflections on the “analysis” side of your double-entry field notes (explained in “Strategies” below). Date each entry, and number each page (This is vital! If you fail to date and number each page of your fieldnotes, you will be lost when it comes time to write up your research and prepare your Research Portfolio for the Celebration of Student Writing) Write legibly enough that someone else could read them. Keep them organized (in your Research Portfolio, among your artifacts and other fieldwork) Taking good fieldnotes requires that to divide the process into two phases: (1) notes you take while you are in the field (Observational/Descriptive fieldnotes) and (2) notes you take after you return...
