Album Review Assignment: Off The Wall
When reading the album review of Lil Wayne’s album “I Am Not A Human Being II” by zcamp, it is not entirely obvious if the reviewer liked or disliked the artist in general. He starts off praising Lil Wayne’s style and his so called “moth butterfly thing”. But then goes into a more sarcastic bashing of his new album. It is obvious that he greatly dislikes his new album that he is reviewing. The style of this review was very casual, which fits the style of the type of people who would buy his album. You can see that his review is casual when looking at the sarcastic tone of the review in general. You can also see that the style of his writing is casual by looking at how the reviewer mentions the more crude examples of Lil Wayne’s work.
In order for zcamp to write his review, he had to have listened to the entire album he is reviewing and know of Lil Wayne’s other albums to compare. Since he compares the album he is reviewing to Lil Wayne’s previous works, he had to know what his other albums sound like. He also mentions a drink in his review that Lil Wayne made up called “sizzurp”. Zcamp talks about how Lil Wayne went to the hospital with violent seizures after consuming too much of his “sizzurp”. To know this information, he must follow the news of Lil Wayne. I do not follow or listen to Lil Wayne, and I did not know about his “sizzurp” or his hospitalization. Zcamp also includes specific examples of phrases and trends that Lil Wayne sang throughout his album. The reviewer had to intensely listen to all the songs and look for the connections of what Lil Wayne was saying from song to song to include that his review.
In another album review that I read of Whitney Houston’s album “I Look to You” by Ann Powers, the style is a little less casual then the review of Lil Wayne, but it still was not completely formal. You can tell that the reviewer likes Whitney Houston, despite her thinking that Whitney is not as good as she was before. The review uses simplistic language that anyone can understand, but does not include crude or sarcastic language like the review of Lil Wayne. The reviewer focuses on the fact that back in Whitney’s golden days, you can tell that she sang with no effort at all. But now she has to put in a lot of effort to sing well. The reviewer can also detect where she is being careful with the highs and lows of her singing. The reviewer has to really know the singer’s voice like the back of her hand to make that kind of comment. That kind of thing is very hard to detect unless you know it very well.
When comparing both reviews, I think the more respectable and effective review is the review of Whitney Houston by Ann Powers. In the review of Lil Wayne, the amount of sarcasm and informal language made me not take zcamp seriously as a writer and doubt his opinions. However, I never did like Lil Wayne, even before reading his review. But for a fan of Lil Wayne, I doubt his review will sway them to purchase or not purchase the album. Ann powers review however talked about the tone of the songs and the style of music more than just what the songs were about. She talks about the sound and quality of her voice, which is the point of listening to someone sing. I think that is what would convince me to buy an album.
In my own review, I will be reviewing the 1979 album “Off the Wall” by Michael Jackson. This album was hugely popular and really separated Michael Jackson as an independent adult singer from his childhood years. According to songfacts.com, The Off The Wall album sold over 10 million copies and was the first album to have 4 top ten singles from the same album. The four hit singles were the tracks “Off The Wall”, “Rock with You”, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”, and “She’s Out Of My Life”. This album also received countless awards including Rolling Stone’s”500 greatest albums of all time”, Inducted into Germany’s hall of fame, won 3 American Music Awards, one Grammy and was a multi-platinum seller in Australia, Mexico, New Zealand, and the U.S.
This album started the trend that led him to be called the King of Pop. In 1979 he was fully graduating from being an aging child star to a full-fledged pop star. According to theroot.com, “Off The Wall” is remembered as the first album by Michael Jackson to have collaborated with producer Quincy Jones, which would lead to a long 10 year business relationship between the two that would redefine pop. This decision to work with Quincy Jones, according to theroot.com, was a product of his growing independence. Off The Wall was also the first project that he worked on without Berry Gordy, his brothers, producers like Gamble and Huff, and without is abusive father (theroot.com). It was a true career reboot for Michael Jackson when the public was starting to see him as a little boy who had aged out of his cuteness. Many of the songs in “Off The Wall” were very much Disco. This album was released just before he was 21 years old, when he was living in New York and going to all the hot clubs, seeing the Disco movement up front (theroot.com).
The album was just plain revolutionary. It was not like any other album in its genre. Joseph Vogel wrote in his book “Man in the Music: The Creative Life and Work of Michael Jackson” that “Off the Wall did for R&B what the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds did for rock”(theroot.com). The first opening song “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Drop” which was #1 in the charts, is a timeless song that is still making people dance over 35 years later, and will continue to make people dance. It immediately introduces you to the pop and disco music of the album. It is fast paced and exciting.
Another top single from the album that also made #1 along with “Don’t Stop Until You Drop”, was “Rock With You”. ‘Rock With You” was a song with a Disco and R&B style to it. It made the charts despite having difficulty finding an audience on pop radio amid racist and homophobic notions on Disco (theroot.com). Additionally, you can argue that the style of ”Rock With You” and the style of its title track, were templates for the black crossover of the early 1980’s, and the style of Michael Jacksons music and many other artists music for years to come (theroot.com). Another major solo hit was “She’s Out Of My Life”. This song is very different from the other 3 solo hits. It is a tear jerking song about a lost love and is much slower and calmer. The other hits were full of pops, fast beats, electronic zaps, and Jackson’s famous “He-Hee” and “owwwws”. This song has a beautiful slow piano in the background that really sooths you and calms you down. It was a necessary break from the constant fast pace songs in the rest of the album. Being a true story, Michael Jackson reportedly cried after every take of “She’s out Of My Life”. You could actually hear Jackson break down in the studio. (billboard.com). The fourth solo of this album that made the top 10 charts was the title track “Off The Wall”. According to billboard.com, this is the song where he first gives a preview of his famous vocal tick “He-Hee”! This song is very similar to “Rock With You” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Drop”. It has a pop and disco feel to it that is iconic of Michael Jackson. This song gave a message to live fast and hard because life is short. Unfortunately, Michael Jackson may have taken that message a little too much too heart. There are a few songs in the album however that are not nearly as impressive. Specifically the track “Girlfriend”. The song is going back to his style as a child and does not have the same pop and excitement of the other songs. It is out of place with the rest of the album and seems like it was just included to fill a number quota to have on the album. The song is also very repetitive and is pretty unimaginative. Another song that is not very impressive is “It’s The Falling In Love”. It follows the same problems of “Girlfriend”. It is boring and slow, and not to mention cheesy. It just doesn’t have the spark and fast pace pop music that made Michael Jackson so famous. Around the time this album came out, Disco was dying and most critics were saying that “Disco sucks”. This album, proves in my opinion that Disco does not have to suck. It was the defining album that changed Michael Jackson’s career forever and made him the independent pop star that he became. In the Rolling Stones rating of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, Off The Wall was number 68. It is commonly seen as his second best album ever, just behind “Thriller”. I personally found that I liked a majority of his songs on the album. I only did not like 2 of the songs that I mentioned before. Overall I would give this album a 9 out of 10. This album is one of those timeless classics that will make millions of people shake their booty to it for years to come.

...Rihanna ‘ANTI’: Review After innumerable delays, rumours and rewrites, Rihanna surprised us on January 28th, when, without warning, she launched her highly anticipated album, ‘Anti.’ Even more surprising was her gift to fans; a free download of the 13-track album on TIDAL, which users were able to get their hands on by using the code ‘TIDAL’ on the popular music app. ‘Anti’s’ chilled-out vibe is an unexpected and refreshing contrast to Rihanna’s previous works. With its tracks being highly emotive and spanning barely over two minutes, this self-assured release paints the Bajan icon in a more chilled-out, stoner light; quite a difference to the badass party girl that we are used to. What is very Rihanna-esque of ‘Anti’ , however, are its central themes of marijuana, alcohol and sex; with lyrics like ‘I’d rather be smoking weed whenever we breathe’ in the aptly named ‘James Joint,’ and ‘So you can put me together, and throw me against the wall’ in ‘Love On The Brain.’ Additionally, the West Indian lilt that we all know and love slides in on many of the album’s tracks, adding to its charisma. One of my favourite things about the piece, though, is how it’s absence of club beats make room for Rihanna’s impressive vocal range. Rihanna’s vocal ability is better than ever before, and ‘Anti’ shows this off on every track in a different way. Another is how the album is pleasantly inconsistent. It gives no sense of any moment in time, any location or any storyline, and dances freely through...

Paul Is Dead

...An Ode to the Beatles… In 1957, John Lennon had begun a band called the Blackjacks who later became the Quarry Men and later that year invited Paul McCartney to join the group. The lineup that McCartney joined featured Lennon, Eric Griffiths on guitar, Len Garry on "tea-chest" bass, Pete Shotton on "washboard" and Colin Hanton on drums. In February 1958 the young guitarist George Harrison joined the group, which was then playing under a variety of names. Recordings of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison from that year still exist. During this period, members continually joined and left the line up. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison were the only constant members. Hanton left in 1959. The group became a regular gig at the Cashashm which was formed by Mona Best—the mother of the early drummer Pete Best. The band had gone through some rough times and even through a few names before become the Beatles. Brian Epstein, the record producer, told them that Pete Best would have to stop drumming so they could invite a better drummer in. Ringo Starr from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes was pulled in because they favored him (and the band also lost to his band in an old contest). With John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Stuart Sutcliffe doing the guitar and vocals, while Ringo Starr was handling drums, and finally George Harrison handling bass with vocals every now and then, the band had begun to release singles. Stuart left the band in 1961 and died the next year from a brain hemmorage. But even...

Scatch and Fats

...Summary: In listening to Louis Armstrong’s “ Satch Plays Fats” album you get a smooth, bourbon street vibe. You get the vibe as if you were in New Orleans at a jazz concert or parade. Armstrong has a very deep voice which is very noticeable in every song. I noticed the instruments played more than he did, which tells me he enjoyed playing his instruments more than singing. He blends his voice very well with his trumpet, the whole album gives off a laid back vibe to relax to. The album “ Satch Plays Fats” was dedicated to “Fats” Waller, and the two artist had many similarities. They both are very entertaining when it comes to there music ,and both are African Americans who sing from there soul. Evaluation: In listening to the smooth, trumpet sounds of Louis Armstrong it made me understand the strong meaning behind his music. Just through his lyrics I could feel the pain and struggle in his music of what he was going through in the song “ Black and Blue”. After listening to his CD, I realized how others could possibly start to like his music, it can touch you in a certain way. Overall I did actually like the album, in the beginning I never would have gave jazz a listen or even thought about actually liking some of the music from it. After taking the time to review and listen to Armstrong’s music I found a new interest. What I would like to know is how did he come up with his powerful lyrics, I would like to know if he was in the moment when he wrote his lyrics. They’re...

While The Marquee has long held a mythical status in the rich history of the London rock scene – hosting early appearances by such legendary bands as The Who and The Rolling Stones – it was actually a dark and rather cramped facility with a tiny stage that fronted an even stuffier dressing room. vividly remember the moment when a review copy of Led Zeppelin’s eponymous debut album arrived at the office. My colleague and fellow scribe Tony Wilson had secured the precious black vinyl LP and dropped it onto the turntable, awaiting my reaction. We were immediately transfixed by the brash, bold sounds that fought their way out of the lofi speakers – Robert Plant’s screaming vocals, the eerie Hammond organ sounds of John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page’s supreme guitar mastery. But amid the kaleidoscope of impressions, the drums were the primary element that set pulses racing. We marveled at the sheer audacity, the sense of...

Inception Evaluation

...Oscar Mudilo Dr. Edwardo Perez ENGL 1301 April 17, 2014 Inception Inception, which means beginning, is a movie about a professional thief who commits corporate espionage by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets. With its characters, music, special effects, originality, and rating. Inception is able to capture its audience with its unique thrills, and to the fact that the story stays within the bounds of believability. In this paper I will examine the five categories for a Sci-fi thrillers film and rate Inception in what levels it falls in such as, mediocre, fair, good, and excellent. The following sections, explain what makes this an excellent film. The director, Christopher Nolan, also director the Batman Trilogy, does an excellent job with his selection of characters. Nolan now has enough power in Hollywood that he can bring together some of the best ensembles of any given year, but can he always handle them? First of all, I feel that in his previous movies he did a poor job of selecting actresses. His female characters range from uninteresting and almost unnecessary (Carrie-Anne Moss in Memento, Hilary Swank in Insomnia) to god-awful (Scarlett Johansson in Prestige, both Maggie Gyllenhaal and Katie Holmes in the Batman movies). But Inception, au contraire, provides us, finally, with a strong female character. Marion Cotillard gives a very strong performance as the film's femme fatale. The rest of the supporting cast is strong for the most part, but no one...

Facebook

...practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis. Although they read these texts daily, they are often unaware of the sophisticated rhetorical analysis they employ while browsing others’ profiles (or as they decide what to add to or delete from their own page). Engaging students in a rhetorical analysis of Facebook can take advantage of this high-interest area — where most students are already rhetorically savvy but unaware of their critical processes — to teach the often...

Closing Down Creativity and Standardising Knowledge in Education

...Closing down creativity and standardising knowledge in education Bottom of Form Details Amongst the well-drilled headlines that define what is happening inside the British education system in the 21st century, one might be forgiven for not noticing what happened to freedom, the space that once existed for individual creativity and personal goals. It is not that in bygone times the system ever aimed to create that space where those values could take root - a state education system was never going to do that - rather, it is the way a space that existed by default has been progressively and ruthlessly closed down. Increasingly, those who run the system are actively on the lookout for any space where their writ does not run. Under the corporate flag of improving the quality and performance of everyone involved in the education process, an increasingly intrusive multi-headed bureaucracy has been quietly transforming the place where it is embedded into the behaviour and units of performance that it alone specifies. As its language and systems become the lingua franca, the values that were once possible to realise within state education, irrespective of its overall purposes, have fallen by the wayside and with them, the integrity of what is being done in the name of ‘education’. This article offers an insight into the backroom of a part of that bureaucracy – a private company that sets and assesses subject knowledge and understanding in examinations. These are the companies that...
