...Sara Johnson Abnormal Psychology TR 6:00 How I Can Help Often times, people with mental illnesses are portrayed as being untrustworthy, strange, and not worth being befriended or helped. Even in everyday conversations I’ve heard people disparage those with eating disorders or self-harm. As someone who wants to protect and help those with mental illnesses, I can make it known to those around me that language like that is offensive. I can do my best to educate friends and people who talk to me about how people with a mental illness are not the stereotype. I have friends who struggle with depression, eating disorders, and bipolar disorder. To hear someone make light or make fun of them hurts them dearly. Also, the webpage mentions writing letters to television shows and movies that portray people with mental illnesses in an unflattering or false way. This is another way to help fight the stigma of mental disorders. Television shows have such a large part in our society, that the message they send about people with mental illnesses shapes societies views significantly. Also, I realize that I myself might be perpetuating the stigma that mentally ill patients live with. By making light of schizophrenia or “hearing voices” I belittle those that actually deal with those issues. I will start to be more aware of the phrases I use and the people it effects. Throwing words like “anorexic” out in a conversation to describe a skinny girl casually is belittling those that are...

It remains the top ranked hospital outside of Boston. Johns Hopkins, a Baltimore merchant and banker, left an estate of $7 million when he died on Christmas Eve 1873 at the age of 78. In his will, he asked that his fortune be used to found two institutions that would bear his name: "Johns Hopkins University" and "The Johns Hopkins Hospital." At the time that it was made, Hopkins's gift was the largest philanthropic bequest in the history of the United States. Toward the end of...

...I see my nails as tools to protect myself from those who want to hurt me. I have wings to fly but they haven’t fully developed because I don’t know where to go. The butterflies stand for happiness and a hidden sadness. As we all know the green light means go, but to me it means never stopping. I am a very positive and optimistic person, I never give up. There is no such thing as red light in my life. I am always on the go, moving forward. We all need love at one point of our lives; to me love is the motivation, action, tolerance, kind the one feeling that makes you want to be better. I hate to feel lonely this one of the reason why love is so important to me. I grow up surrounded by people who are loving and caring, I can’t imagine my life without love. I consider myself a strong and confident woman who fights for what I want without letting anyone bring me down. I didn’t had the best childhood, so now I want to fight and get the best out of my life because I know there is an incredibly future ahead of me. I am a very outgoing and happy person. ...Keyless It would be unwise to cite that our generation has an easy way of living because the reality is really far from it. I have come to realize that the greatest challenge this generation will face is overcoming the mistakes of the past generation. There are so many things to mention but I will discuss only one, the lack of innovation and imagination. They say that the lack of innovation and creative imagination causes the downfall of the country’s economy. Most people know that innovation and imagination are keys to having a better future. But why do our generation lack creative imagination and innovation? I believe it is due to the educational system we have. According to a survey, people would rather stay at home and use social networking websites than go outside and create something new. Yes, there are many inventions created by our generation such as the brand new software, the iOS 7; however, compared to another software created earlier, the iOS 7 is pretty lame because it just has the same features as those of the past software. Tony Blair once said, “Education now is a complete anathema to innovation; gone are the debates; gone is the virality of life.” He simply means that without a good and effective educational system, people would not be able to understand true intelligence and I agree to that. Our education system tells us that when students fail or get a low grade, they would not get a good future. However, the real meaning of education is to help...

...When you’ve got through the theory, you probably have begun to understand how your essay should look like. But what should it contain? Hardly anybody can give the answer so far. Strange as it is, but usually the most difficult essay topics are those of informative essays. Such topics usually suggest that we tell about ourselves, our jobs or childhood, hobbies, dreams and those who have played a significant role in our lives. Do we remember our childhood? Some people do and other don’t. Do we know our own hobbies? Yes. However, when we are to write about something personal, we find ourselves lost. The same thing happens, when students are suggested to write about their families. They just can’t believe it can be interesting to anyone, except themselves. Do you share this point of view? Then, let’s try envisioning your family in a different light or from a new angle. Do you have any siblings? If you do, then do you stand for each other? Or, maybe, you have always had and that has made you what you are? Would you like to spend a day with your siblings and what would you do? Do you have any common interests? Did your parents have long and romantic relationships or they fell in love rapidly and have never separated since then? Could your Mum elope? Or, maybe, your grandparents were happy runaway lovers? Did you get enough attention and care while being a child? Do your parents still live together? Would you like to change anything in your relationships with them? Do...

Is It Okay to Cry at Work?

...Is it Okay to Cry at Work? Christopher S. King Human Behavior in Organization 15TW2 Dr. Shana Patrick December 7, 2014 Abstract The purpose of this research paper is to explore emotions in the workplace. By having a thorough understanding of how emotions affect individuals, companies can be more productive. Keywords: emotional dissonance, positive and negative emotions, Introduction In order to understand the motivation behind individuals in the workplace, one must understand feeling and emotions. Emotions are defined as intense feelings directed at someone or something (Robbins, pg. 90). Emotions cover a broad range of feelings. Feelings such as elation and happiness are considered positive emotions while feelings of hate and anger are negative emotions. Also, with the discussion of emotions in the workplace, there are felt emotions and displayed emotions. Felt emotions are an individual’s actual feelings whereas displayed emotions are those that are required by the organization for a specific job (Robbins, pg. 102). By understanding emotions, a positive work environment can be developed. Managing Emotions The workplace offers a bountiful opportunity to experience a wide range of emotions (Muchinsky, 2000). There are several factors that make organizations ineffective at managing emotions. Not having a full understanding of emotions and how they affect the workplace is one factor. Items such as one’s personality, time of day, day of week...

It Is Okay to Cry for Work

...1. What factors do you think make some organizations ineffective at managing emotions? There are many factors that make some organizations ineffective at managing emotions in the workplace, such as personality issues or depression or different culture or lack of management involvement with employees. It is hard to help them when they keep it as a secret and not willing to tell anyone. Each person may not act in the same way in a same situation due to cultural background (Robbin 2013). As a result, organizations face difficulties when they are handling with their employee’s emotions. In addition, sometimes leaders of the organizations cannot control their own emotions as well, since everyone has his/her difficulties and bad mood in sometimes. On the other hand, emotions are considered disruptive which they felt interfered with employees’ ability to work in organizations. Employees are not allowed to express frustration within the workplace, but they didn’t realize that emotions are a part of daily life. 2. Do you think the strategic use and display of emotions serve to protect employees, or does covering your true emotions at work lead to more problems than it solves? In my opinion, covering your true emotions at work lead to more problems that it solves that will not solve your problem in a long term and it will make thing worse. Although, it make people feel less trustful and disrespectful on his/her works. Therefore, you should perform a professional manner when you...

...Changes in the fitness market that have affected the nutrition industry The fitness industry is constantly evolving. New products and equipment are being introduced as technology and research advances, which is encouraging consumers to exercise more and eat clean. These changes have persuaded consumers into purchasing these and using them. The industry is growing gradually and is helping to tackle obesity and those who are unfit and unhealthy. An NHS report states that “over the past 20 to 30 years, sport supplements have become increasingly popular among gym-goers, and not just a small number of serious athletes”. This shows us how far the industry has come and developed, as sport supplements are available to everyone wishing to use them. Changes such as free government schemed gym membership to those who are overweight and heavy advertising from fitness brands on new supplements and equipments have helped increase the market size. This has also helped affect markets such as the nutrition industry because those consumers who want to go gym will be looking to purchase supplements as a tool to lose weight and be more toned. Health and fitness is an important aspect of life. Consumers are always being encouraged to look after themselves and maintain a healthier lifestyle. This has increased the demand for consumers looking for nutritional products and goods. Therefore many nutrition brands are always researching and developing on introducing new products to maintain...

Many Faces of "Okay"

...Introduction. The English language started his first steps very long time ago: about fifth century with first settlements of British Islands. Now it`s the most popular language in the world: most of schools in each country give their pupils the subject, the big companies offer job only to english-speakers, in big cities there are all advertisements with translation to English and so on. Today every language has some word from English and also there some of them that became an international. Today more than 15% of the Earth`s population can speak English, so it`s not hard question from wich language the most popular word came. Of course you know this word, it`s "okay". When somebody asks you about your feelings you may say "i`m OK!", when somebody agree with something you may say "He`s okeys" and there`re a lot of examples more. How many times per day do we use word "okay"? 5? 10? Or even more? But do we know anything of it except of the meaning (or only one of them)? I made this project to show you how it`s deep, how many faces it has and just to teach you how to use it in a correct way. Also i want to tell you about it`s history or rather histories, because linguists now days don`t know which of them is true. All it started when my teacher had offered me and some of my schoolmates to take participation in contest about English language and after that i found some interesting information about word "okay". It was really informative to me to read some stories about...

Spanking Is Not Okay

...Spare the Rod, Raise a Child Corporal punishment has gained much attention from lawmakers and government leaders. Since the late 1970’s, there have been many studies conducted have concluded that there are many negative effects from the outcome of a parent spanking his child. There have been many people who have attempted to get physical punishments outlawed, and in some cities, they have been successful. In other areas, it is up to the parent or guardian of the child to choose how they would like to deliver the punishment. The topic of spanking seems to arouse strong opinions on both sides of the topic. While some parents believe that they must resort to violence, in order to send the message to their child, that the behavior that he is involved in will not be condoned, other parents seek alternative methods of punishment. Spanking a child is just one of many forms of punishment that a parent can implicate on his child. By choosing spanking as the method of punishment, the child is learning to use violence as a way to obtain a certain outcome. Soon-to-be parents should be aware that spanking their child has been shown to lead to aggressive behavior, fear of adults, and anti-social behavior, and because of these risks, the parents should not spank their children. Spanking has been recorded since the Ancient Greek times. Spankings were administrated to the adults by pagan priests to increase fertility in women. The Catholics adopted this practice, but instead they used the...
