Media Coverage of the OKC Bombing April 19, 1995, Timothy Mcveigh detonated a car bomb that blew up the Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It killed so many people and children. This was the first ever terrorist attack the U.S. had ever endured and that being said the reporters and journalist who at the time had the responsibility to cover this tragic event for the public had to set the standard of media coverage of a very massive and sensitive, traumatic event. The media was not only responsible for covering the damage and rescue missions that occurred but also the capture of Mcveigh and eventually his trial that followed and most importantly the memorialization of the victims. Satellite city is where public information officers, police, fire and highway patrol departments would all help brief the media, answer any questions and put out any rumors that might be circulating. The fire and police public information officers also assisted the media and scheduling interviews and arranging for reporters and cameras to go into the rescue areas to capture footage. The media and task force had to work together in order to keep the information to the public correct therefore John Hanson became the face of the media he was the Oklahoma City Fire Department Public Information officer chief and he had a lot to do with the way the briefing of the media was set up. He decided to have predetermined times of the day where the media would meet at Satellite City to be briefed about the day's work and ongoing rescue missions and exedra. Not only did the media inform the public of the rescue mission and the damage but it also played a valuable resource to rescues by helping inform the public of what goods and services that we needed and where families could go together information on their loved ones that may have been affected by the explosion.
