The female gender, as by traditional means, has been portrayed as beings dedicated to making men happy and by attracting male attention. It is because of this that many magazines and television ads have dedicated their attention to women who want to please their male counterparts. Women have been sexulized, portrayed as the weaker gender, and as submissive, in order to portray what femininity is to the general public.This can be depicted through ads that focus on appearance and or weight. One example of such production is the Olay ad, in Women’s Health magazine, uses an attractive, popular female icon, Carrie Underwood, in order to gain the attention of other female while making women want to aspire to be like Underwood.
The Olay cleansing ad, depicts famous singer, songwriter, and actress, Carrie Underwood in order to obtain the attention of women and to sell their cleansing product. Having, not only a successful, but beautiful woman on the cover of the ad, grabs the attention of females who aspire to look like her. This ad similar to others, is using the insecurities women have with their own appearance, in order to make a profit. Women, who may want to obtain smooth skin and look like a beautiful female icon, such as Underwood are more likely to buy the product if they believe that the singer uses …show more content…
This type of advertisement is often aimed at middle-class women who believe that it is generally this physical appearance that men tend to find the most attractive. The slim face and upper body of Underwood dominates the entire ad, allowing the viewer to understand that it is this aspect that is the most significant, as it has the potential to draw in the consumer’s attention. This is probably due to the fact that Underwood’s image of beauty is what women will look at and think “I want to look like her” and make them want to buy the product on
