The need for attention is a desire that lives inside every human. Unfortunately, marketers have learned to prey upon this craving in order to sell their product more effectively. Advertisements all over society share the message that the viewer is not adequate and can never be good enough. When faced with this proposed dilemma, the audience has nowhere to turn but to material goods for comfort. To further spread this message, many advertisements in the most recent edition of Self magazine appeal to the need for attention. Each one seeks to show how women can become better looking and gain the gaze of not only men, but their fellow women.
The most prominent example is the Olay Total Effects advertisement where every aspect appeals to the target …show more content…
The marketers are able to play off this knowledge by providing a facial model who is about the same age of the audience and claiming that the product is healthy in order to create a sense of ethos. This is immensely important to the message of the ad because older women are exceedingly prone to having wrinkled faces. Obviously, signs of age are seen as unattractive, and thus, Olay provides and escape to aging. The choice of text on the side of the ad claiming, “I’ll never look back, I will just look younger.” Conveys a clear message to the audience in a confident manner that this is the product they are looking for: Olay Total Effects will give them the youth and attention they crave. The message from the marketers of Olay also claims, “Now with more vitamins than the leading prestige moisturizer”. Judging from how this statement demerits other skin products and claims that Total Effects is superior, it is implied that the viewers are not entirely gullible and will need some proof of how good the product truly is. Knowing that vitamins are good for people and that this product has many vitamins, it is safe to assume that Total Effects will help the reader. Olay knows that readers will come to this conclusion and so they are able to play off the intellect of their own

The model has very minimal makeup and almost flawless skin, aside from a few small wrinkles underneath her eyes. Her expression is confident with a slight knowing smile as if she has found the secret formula all women have been desperately searching for. At the bottom center of the page there is a small bottle of the anti-aging moisturizer surrounded by two fluids spiraling around it like a tornado.
