College is a time in a person’s life of exploration, growth, deciding what you would like to do in life, and much more. It can be a very exciting, but also very stressful time for anybody going through the college experience. In the world today there are many generalizations made about what college is like, and whether good or bad they give any potential college student preconceived notions about a wide array of topics. A common misconception in today’s society is that one has to decide on a career before they enroll in a college; however, it is said that as much as 80% of college students change their majors at least once. I didn't actually declare this as my major until I came to Olivet the first week. My intended purpose for coming to Olivet was based off being recruited for football, and also a communications major. Now, I'm not saying that somebody should just go to a college without an idea of what their interest may be, but what I am saying is that choosing a career is not necessary. There are so many broad majors that cover an array of subjects; furthermore, the first year or two of college is just core classes and basics anyway. I changed my interest 3 times in my life. Before coming to college my initial interest was in the medical field. I explored several career outlooks such as being an athletic trainer, physician’s assistant, as well as a nurse. Ultimately what I realized was that the health field as a whole wasn't a passion of mine. I never decided on a career, but I analyzed several careers in the field that helped persuade my decision. More narrowly I looked at broadcasting under the idea I needed a life plan going into college, and what I thought was my passion in life faded away once actually being in college. To come to college and expand your mind is the greatest privilege in the sense that you can dab into anything and everything to see what you like and dislike. I chose psychology due to my realization that my passion in life is to help others with their complications. I still don't know what branch of psychology I would like to pursue, but I know that is alright. My plan is to dip my toes in the water for several fields of psychology, and then I will know what I want in life. I look forward to the journey that these next four years will bring, and although I am undecided on a specific career I am not

Accounting

...P R E FAC E THE ACCOUNTING ENVIRONMENT Accounting is the most employable, sought-after major for 2009, according to entrylevel job site CollegeGrad.com. One reason for this interest is found in the statement by former Secretary of the Treasury and Economic Advisor to the President, Lawrence Summers. He noted that the single-most important innovation shaping our capital markets was the idea of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). We agree with Mr. Summers. Relevant and reliable financial information is a necessity for viable capital markets. Without it, our markets would be chaotic, and our standard of living would decrease. This textbook is the market leader in providing the tools needed to understand what GAAP is and how it is applied in practice. Mastery of this material will be invaluable to you in whatever field you select. Through many editions, this textbook has continued to reflect the constant changes taking place in the GAAP environment. This edition continues this tradition, which has become even more significant as the financial reporting environment is exploding with major change. Fortunately, the profession has recently developed the Financial Accounting...
