Flannery O’Conner’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”: A Response.
In Flannery O’Conner’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” O’Conner used The Misfit to criticize the grandmother’s character after only just meeting her once. The grandmother character from the beginning to the end of the story is consistent and is a leading cause to her family’s death.
The grandmother was the protagonist in this short story but was not necessarily the hero. She started off in the story as a nagger and unease person as she pressure her son that Florida was not the place to be. Although Florida is normally a family spot for vacation in the United States the grandmother felt she could be manipulative and change the mind of her son to do what she wanted and pick the vacation of her choice. She was so stuck in the past and was not up for change that’s how her character took over the best of her. …show more content…
This aspect of her character was a leading role of why her family and she was lead to death. The grandmother felt she knew the answer to every problem. I felt that O’Conner’s title to the story is tied back to the grandmother’s judging attitude. She always had something to say about the men surrounded by her from when she saw The Misfit in the newspaper, how her son Bailey handle things, and also about the man from her story she told her grandchildren. She could be the one stating “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” based off the way she treated every man that came into her

...Judgment Day The story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor displays hypocrisy, failure, and allusion. These three things cause the tragic deaths of all but three characters. Flannery O Connor's A Good Man Is Hard To Find

...A Good Man is Hard to Find is driven by certain events caused by the grandmother which are responsible for her family’s fatal encounter with The Misfit. In the beginning of the story, the grandmother hides her cat in a valise in the car and does not tell anyone, since “her son, Bailey, didn’t like to arrive at a motel with a cat.” (3) This decision leads to much of the family’s problems later in the story. When the family starts on their trip, they still have no idea that the cat is in the car with them. During their drive, the grandmother comes to the realization that they are going to the wrong place, letting Pitty Sing, the cat, out of the basket to jump on Bailey’s shoulders. “The instant the valise moved, the newspaper top she had over...

Born in Savannah Georgia in 1925, O’Connor was a devout Catholic. Her writings incorporated religious themes and her southern life (Bio). When reading O’Connor’s short stories, it is very surprising and shocking that the stories are often dark and controversial. Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” “Good Country People,” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge” use macabre, grotesque violence, irony, and grace through the depiction of her characters to illustrate that when an individual is faced with “grave” circumstances; those are the moments when grace is realized. Flannery O’Connor incorporates the use of macabre and violence in her short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” masterfully to elicit an unforgettable moment of grace from a character when faced with her “grave” circumstance. The use of grotesque violence is vividly displayed as a southern family is horrendously murdered by an escaped convict, The Misfit and his accomplices. An “eerie” sense of foreshadowing is realized when the protagonist, the grandmother...

...Flannery O’ Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a short story about a family road trip from hell. Early on in the story, the reader becomes appalled at the complete disrespect the members of the family have for one another, and how their dysfunctional family dynamic contributes to the horrifying trip. From the very beginning, O’ Connor’s tale gives the reader a sense of foreboding as she mentions the crazed criminal named “The Misfit” who recently broke free of the Federal Jail and is working his way to Florida—their destination. ...A Good Man Is Hard To Find - Foreshadowing In "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor, one is struck by the unexpected violence at the end of the story. However, if one re-reads the story as second time, one will see definite signs of foreshadowing of the ending. In the course of this story, O'Connor uses strong imagery to foreshadow the people and the events in this story. There are three significant times she uses this technique. They are the description of the grandmother's dress, the death of the family, and the conversation between the Misfit and the grandmother. The grandmother did not want to go to Florida; she ironically dresses in her Sunday best. She was dressed very nicely with, "A navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet." (11). A strong foreshadowing imagery can be seen in these lines. Knowing the ending of the story, the grandmother's elaborate dress Is this essay helpful? A Good Man Is Hard to Find

...A Good Man is Hard to Find Flannery O' Connor's story: "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is built upon irony. The main character, the grandmother, is an extremely ironic person. The author uses grandmother to express many forms of irony. Grandmother sees herself as a very innocent, caring person but she is actually a quite deceitful figure who embellishes stories and tells falsehoods to get what she wants. An example of verbal irony from grandmother is when she wants to go to Tennessee not Florida; so she makes sure to remind her family that “An enraged killer, The Misfit,” was preying upon people in Florida. Although, later in the story she is begging for her life, telling “The Misfit” that he seems like a good man, and one that was brought up with good intentions. Grandmother finally agrees to go on the trip, but she sneaks her cat, Pitty Sing along, because she knows her son wouldn’t allow the cat to be cooped up in a motel for three days. With this cat, comes an extreme example of situational irony. As she brought the cat along for good purposes, the cat brings with it peril. As grandmother thinks of a terrible memory, she flinches and the cat flings out of her arms hitting the driver, grandmother’s son Bailey, and causing the car to spin out of control. Shockingly, all are left alive with no major injuries, but the car will not start. Grandmother waves down a black “hearse-like automobile”, which is ironic, because hearses are what bring dead...

In Flannery O’ Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” a family finds themselves in a disastrous event, which they would not have been in had they stuck to the original plan. So, when she gave a real diamond necklace back it was ironic that she always wanted to be rich, and she had been, but only because she had worked...

The Misfit's Justice

...In Flannery O' Connor's short story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," a character who calls himself The Misfit murders random, innocent people. When he crosses paths with the protagonist of the story, an overbearing grandmother, he attempts to justify his murders, claiming that there is "no pleasure but meanness" before he murders her as well (O'Connor 1295). At this point, a reader must question why The Misfit finds pleasure in killing and punishing people. The true answer to this question, while contradictory to his previous statements, is that he does not truly find pleasure in killing people; rather, he feels that his murders provide a form of justice and equality in a world that lacks these attributes. The actions of Matt Fowler, the vengeful...
