Open Source Software
Open source refers to any software whose source code is made available free (not on a fee or licensing basis as in e-business) for any 3rd party to review and modify. In other words it is open and accessible to all. It continuously develops free products by bringing together thousands of dedicated volunteers from around the world.

Start-up companies taking advantage of Web 3.0
Start preparing by developing IT systems, hiring talent and restructuring the organisation to take advantage of Web 3.0. At organisational level, start with capacity building and at technical level, by adopting open systems and moving real-time rather than asynchronous model.

Ensure that the business has got the right skills. There is already a huge demand for data scientists who are able to work with large chunks of data to find meaningful information.
Create an online dialogue about company products and services for customers. Capture information produced, and use it to refine products, services and marketing.

Key recommendations include:
▫ Open up business systems to the internet
▫ Move to real-time analytics and processing
▫ Structure data so it can be used more effectively
▫ Develop internal web and data talent
▫ Involve customers in all parts of the business through social media.

Open Source Software

...Open Source Software Intro While knowledge is the public good, there is discussion whether or not all knowledge should free for public. Today society chose suffer the loss of knowledge for certain years. They use intellectual property law to encourage individuals to invest in research and development and creating knowledge they can profit. We want to analyze an alternative way in distributing knowledge specifically open source software and how useful it is to both creators and society. Definition and characteristics Open source licenses promise to everyone what many in the community refer to as software freedom. The terminology of Freedom is emotionally satisfying, but it has proven to be very confusing. Not that software freedom isn’t definable. The Free Software Foundation lists four essential kinds of software freedom: 1. The freedom to run the software for any purpose 2. The freedom to study how the software works and to adapt it to your needs 3. The freedom to redistribute copies of the software 4. The freedom to improve the software and distribute your improvements to the public Confusion about the term Freedom was the very reason the term open source was created. The newer term refers to an important concept well understood by anyone who has ever written computer software: Programmers write source code to direct computers to perform specific tasks, while the computer itself takes care of the routine task of translating the source code into an...

Free and Open-Source Software

...and Open-Source Software NT1430 – Linux Networking Research Paper: Free and Open-Source Software As the name so aptly implies FOSS is software that is both free and open source.  It is liberally licensed to grant users the right to use, copy, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. This practice is becoming increasingly widespread and gaining acceptance because of the potential benefits that could arise from its use. The “free” part of the title refers not to price, but more so to the idea of freedom for the user. The user of this type of software has the ability to copy and to reuse the software which usually is not the case. The open source part of the acronym refers to the use of the peer to peer model of development. In the 1950’s to 1970’s, advanced user privelages in reference to software were the norm. Most software allowed the user to share and copy at this time, since most of the companies who dealt in the field were more focused on marketing the hardware the software was almost always complimentary. This however, began to change when software development costs began to escalate and companies began competing for the software market. Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel began to shift things back in 1991. His software was a freely modifiable source code. Over the years the idea gathered much more momentum. It has burgheoned so that now major IT companies are now developing projects with open source applications...

Open and Closed Source Software

...Open Versus Close Source Software Tristan San Juan 03/17/2015 POS/355 Brian Davis Open versus Closed Source software? Which is better? There are many questions behind which software is better. There are literary many pros and cons on both of the soft wares. It comes down to the users’ limitation and preferable on which one is to use. Some people have both and use them for different reasons. As you read on we going to clarify some features on each kind of software to further explain the difference between the two kinds of software. Closed source Software, most users are going to be familiar with this. Windows, Adobe (Photoshop), Norton Anti-Virus and Mac OS are very fine example of what closed software are. In definition a closed software or aka a proprietary software is, “any software that is copyrighted and bears limits against use, distribution and modification that are imposed by its publisher, vendor or developer. Proprietary software remains the property of its owner/creator and is used by end-users/organizations under predefined conditions ("Proprietary Software", 2015).” Meaning it is what it is you cannot edit it in source code level, I mean you can hack it but most likely as users who doesn’t know anything about coding will most likely break it. One of the biggest sign when people see closed source software is it cost money, yes it does and you pay for what you get. Some of the benefits of having a closed source software is that is one its reliable quality...

Open Source Software

...OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE What are reasons for business to use open source software? With the current economy difficulties, companies are trying to find areas in their businesses where they can save money. Many companies are having no choice but to let people go. Some businesses try to avoid lay-offs and instead are looking in other areas to save money. One of the areas is, of course, the IT department; software application acquisition is an area that might lead to a big money savings. Even in financially difficulties times, businesses want or need to improve their application environment. Sometimes it might even be necessary to invest in the IT infrastructure for long-term savings, which may result in the company not needing to close their doors. But many business owners or CEO’s will question if open source software is ready for business. This research paper intends to answer this question. The best reason to use open source software in a business environment is cost savings. This gives the business freedom to use software and change the source code in other words, modify how the software application is used, as it is needed. Open source removes the need for dependence on single vendor solutions and it provides very high quality applications and very good support. To understand open source software it is important to know what open source is, and what the meaning of open source software is. This research paper will also show where open source came from; the history of open...

...feature open source Achieving Quality in Open Source Software Mark Aberdour, opensourcetesting.org Reviewing objective studies of open source software quality can help us better understand how to achieve software quality in both open and closed-source development. T he open source software community has published a substantial body of research on OSS quality. Focusing on this peer-reviewed body of work lets us draw conclusions from empirical data about how to achieve OSS quality, rather than relying on the large volume of evangelical opinion that has historically dominated this field. This body of published research has become much more critical and objective in its efforts to understand OSS development, and a consensus has emerged on the key components of high-quality OSS delivery. This article reviews this body of research and draws out lessons learned, investigating how the approaches for delivering high-quality OSS differ from, and can be incorporated into, closed-source software development. paring quality management in open source and closed-source software development. OSS development must also manage a geographically distributed team, requiring focus on coordination tasks. Yet OSS development seems to eschew best practices without software quality suffering. Indeed, an extensive study of 100 open source applications found that structural code quality was higher than expected and comparable with commercially developed software.1 The body of research demonstrates...

Open-Source vs Proprietary Software

...proprietary software versus open-source software. It was a very interesting discussion and although I did learn some new information about it, I cannot say that I have a distinct preference for one or the other. On the one hand, proprietary software is way more user-friendly, which is definitely a benefit since I spend a lot of time working on my computer. It is easier to use: even if it is the first time I am using it, I don’t waste any time trying to figure out how the software works. In addition, I have been using proprietary software for longer than open-source software. Therefore, I have more knowledge about it and I feel more comfortable using it. Nonetheless, proprietary software is more expensive but as a student, I cannot use its price as a drawback since we have free access to most proprietary software. On the other hand, as an engineering student in computer science, I think open-source software also offers a lot. The fact that the source code is made available allows anyone to view, modify, contribute and possibly improve the software and then freely redistribute it for everyone to use. Most of open-source improvements have been made this way, owing to the different points of view and perspectives exchanged by the public. For instance, this is amazingly helpful for a company because software engineers have the ability to change how an open-source application works to add features the company may require. Furthermore, the security issues in open-source software are less...

Free and Open Source Software (Foss)

...IT 320 Research Paper 2 Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) has been a pinnacle of the corporate world ever since it came around. It has been an easy to use and replicate without worry of patent or licensing infringement. However, in 2006 Microsoft found that many of their patents had been infringed upon by several different aspects. The Linux kernel found in most servers was one of them. Microsoft took a big leap going after FOSS for 235 patents. FOSS is run by Stallman who was responsible for the GNU Manifesto also known to most as the GNU General Public License (GPL) . With Microsoft heading the full speed train against FOSS it took a demanding tire on both parties. While Microsoft, in the mean time was also striking a deal with Novell on its Linux based server support. FOSS was sure to go under as Linux was the base of all its open source used in many applications and the applications within Linux such as samaba or Open Office. The Deal with Novell was made to walk around the GPL of the GNU and expose loop holes for Microsoft’s gain but also creating a pressing dilemma for the GNU. The deal struck between Novell and Microsoft was a “we don’t sue you and you don’t sue us” which indicates that not only was FOSS involved in patent infringement but also Microsoft. The Deal included over 200 million dollars to Novell and 43 Million to Microsoft for “license distribution” of Novells’ Server software. The after effects of this deal resulted in a addition...

Bla Bla and Blah

...Traditional software development follows a familiar pattern. A company writes a program and then tries to sell it. The program’s “source code” is a trade secret, just like an auto manufacturer’s blueprints for its cars. By contrast — as the name suggests — the source code in an oss project is available to anyone who wants it. The software is developed and maintained by a community of volunteers. Essentially, anyone is free to take the results of this work and modify it, extend its capabilities, or incorporate it into their own projects (usually, but not always, on condition that they keep their own contributions “open” in a similar way).2 It is a counterintuitive way to act in the highly competitive world of computing and information technology. And yet, although casual users are often unaware of it, many essential features of the Internet — such as sending email and serving web pages — are more often than not controlled by software created through oss projects. Besides this “backstage” work, oss projects like the gnu/Linux operating system and, more recently, Apple’s use of oss components in their operating system have become increasingly prominent. Large system integrators, or solution providers, stand to gain the most from open source software because they increase profits through direct cost savings and the ability to reach more customers through improved pricing flexibility. Every dollar a system integrator saves on license costs paid to a software firm is a...

...With advances in software development came lawsuits between developers for patents on processes of code, some are legitimate but many are so generalist that anyone with skill attempting to develop in the same language cannot avoid violating the patent. If the product resulting from this is highly successful then it is likely that the company with the patent, of which they sometimes own thousands of patents, will sue over the rights for awards sometimes in the millions of dollars. Many of these lawsuits are held in Eastern Texas because of the favorable outcome likely to the patent holder. On top of the cost to the successful developer there is also the public reputation loss to take into account. Would you buy a product if you believed that that product was stolen intellectual property? Thus in one blow large companies take aim as much for the other companies reputation with bad press as it does for money. Sometimes the company holding the patent did not even develop the product that he patent is covering. One such battle is currently being fought. Oracle is suing Google for patent violations that they acquired by purchasing Sun. Prior to this recent purchase Oracle had very little to do with Java, the programming language that the patent violation are for. While this is not what is commonly known as patent trolling, where a small company sues a large company primarily for revenue using a frivolous patent, it is what I believe to be patent pirating. Open source is a coding standard...

Open Source

...Open Source: Salvation or Suicide? OPEN SOURCE DEFINITION: Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria: 1. Free Redistribution The license shall not restrict any party from selling or giving away the software as a component of an aggregate software distribution containing programs from several different sources. The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale. 2. Source Code The program must include source code, and must allow distribution in source code as well as compiled form. Where some form of a product is not distributed with source code, there must be a well-publicized means of obtaining the source code for no more than a reasonable reproduction cost preferably, downloading via the Internet without charge. The source code must be the preferred form in which a programmer would modify the program. Deliberately obfuscated source code is not allowed. Intermediate forms such as the output of a preprocessor or translator are not allowed. 3. Derived Works The license must allow modifications and derived works, and must allow them to be distributed under the same terms as the license of the original software. 4. Integrity of The Author's Source Code The license may restrict source-code from being distributed in modified form only if the license allows the distribution of "patch files" with the source code for the purpose of modifying the program at...

Osi Four Ways to Win

...models for making money with open source: 1. Support Sellers (otherwise known as "Give Away the Recipe, Open A Restaurant"): In this model, you (effectively) give away the software product, but sell distribution, branding, and after-sale service. This is what (for example) Red Hat does. 2. Loss Leader: In this model, you give away open-source as a loss-leader and market positioner for closed software. This is what Netscape is doing. 3. Widget Frosting: In this model, a hardware company (for which software is a necessary adjunct but strictly a cost rather than profit center) goes open-source in order to get better drivers and interface tools cheaper. Silicon Graphics, for example, supports and ships Samba. 4. Accessorizing: Selling accessories - books, compatible hardware, complete systems with open-source software pre-installed. It's easy to trivialize this (open-source T-shirts, coffee mugs, Linux penguin dolls) but at least the books and hardware underly some clear successes: O'Reilly Associates, and SSC are among them. The open-source culture's exemplars of commercial success have, so far, been service sellers or loss leaders. Nevertheless, there is good reason to believe that the clearest near-term gains in open-source will be in widget frosting. For widget-makers (such as semiconductor or peripheral-card manufacturers), interface software is not even potentially a revenue source. Therefore the downside of moving to open source is minimal. (Frank Hecker of...
