Manage Occupational Health and Safety in the Building and Construction Workplace

How would you communicate your Safety Management System to your employees, subcontractors and visitors to site.What do they have to do, What do they have to sign? |

A Safety Management System can help the employer to improve work environment as well as to prevent injuries and illness at workplace. It is therefore very important to effective communicate the system to the employees, subcontractors and visitors.

For the employees, it should be provided with the policies and procedures that emphasizes the importance of workplace safety systems at site and attached in the employment contract for them to read and sign before attending to site work. On the work site, there should be signs and symbols of the safety system sticking on fences. For workers who are first day working on site should have the site induction including the safety system for about half an hour and work them around the site for introducing the site safety system. What’s more, the employer should always begin the meetings with the safety system topic so it can help the employees be aware of the organisation’s safety issues.

For the subcontractors and visitors, there should be emails in regards to the safety system for their understand of the company’s safety program. Besides, in the contracts, it is helpful to state the safety systems and have them signed on for commitment. Furthermore, the company representative for site safety induction should always escort around visitors. Also subcontractors and visitors should be expected to follow safe work practices whenever visit the working site.
