Trisomy 13

...Trisomy 13 and the grace of God Veronica Hale was a very dedicated woman to her family and to God as well. In 1998, she gave birth to a baby girl with a rare disease known as Trisomy 13. Also referred to as Patau’s syndrome, is holoprosencephaly due to an extra chromosome 13, in which central nervous system defects are associated with mental retardation, along with cleft lip and palate, polydactyly, and dermal pattern anomalies, and abnormalities of the heart, viscera, and genitalia. This genetic disorder is caused by a person having three copies of genetic material from chromosome 13, instead of the usual two copies (V.Hale 2) Veronica was told by many physicians and other medical personnel that ‘these babies don’t live’. Veronica believed all along that her daughter, Molly, would be okay regardless of what the doctors or what anyone else said (V.Hale 1). Veronica began to pray, and ask that God’s will be done in her situation. She asked God to allow her to hold a live baby in her arms when the baby arrived. Veronica did her homework, asking questions of medical personnel, and reading everything she could find about Trisomy babies. She obtained enough knowledge to know that Trisomy 13 babies rarely live to be teenagers, although a small number have been known to do so. She hoped and prayed that her child would be one that survived. She knew that caring for her baby would be very difficult, but she would gladly give of herself and of her time to see this baby survive......

Chap 13

...Chapter 13 Other than formal power, there is one type of power that has two categories named personal power. Personal power arises from a person’s unique characteristics. This means that you do not have to be a CEO or manager in order to have power over people. The first category of power is Expert Power. Expert power is “influence wielded as a result of expertise, special skill, or knowledge” (Robbins 422). In other words, in a field that becomes increasingly specialized, those who have extensive knowledge of the field gain power and are more valuable than those that do not. For instance, taxes may be difficult for many people to understand and therefore, they must hire tax accountants. The accountant has power because of their extensive knowledge so you hand them the ability to review your financial records. This plays role when managers of one specific Marriott need help making a decision. The manager consults with the general manager who has greater expertise when it comes to managerial skills. So when decisions become increasingly complicated, general managers become more valuable and have added power. The second type of power is referent power. This is power that a person has because they possess resources or admirable qualities and people desire to please them. This term is most commonly linked with celebrities and athletes and is not relevant at this particular Marriott. The managers at the Marriott claim that office politics do not play a large role......

13 Conversations

...Ask yourself if you’re really happy and you might be surprised at what you find. Ask several people at various points in their lives and you will get a different answer. This is the premise behind the film “13 Conversations about One Thing”, a touching, poignant and in some moments, deeply philosophical film, directed by Jill Sprecher. The film interweaves five contemporary stories into a single narrative. It deals with the profound, often unintentional impact that people have on one another, while searching for a more meaningful and happier existence. As the characters lives collide, mesh, and bounce off one another we see how their lives are linked in moments of highs and lows. The movie finds connections between people who think they are strangers, finding the answer to one person’s problem in the question raised by another. In the opening scene in the film, we get a glimpse of Walkers life, a Columbia University physics professor whose life has been disrupted by an assault. His wife, Patricia, seems more concerned than he is. At the dinner table, the two barely exchange a word. The atmosphere is one of utter boredom and contempt. The recent assault seems to affect him and his wife asks him, “What is it that you want?” his response sets up the rest of the film. “I want what everyone wants”, he says, “to experience life, to wake up enthused, to be happy”. The whole randomness of the event has brought to his attention his general unhappiness and boredom with his routine......

...Case 13-07 Facts: Fuzzy Dice Inc. manufactures novelty items that it distributes to wholesalers and large online and direct-mail retailers. Because of the bestselling new products, Fuzzy is having a record-breaking year and is holding a large amount of cash on its balance sheet. Fuzzy operates in an area where several other light manufacturers operate, one of which is Tiny Tots Toys LLC (“Tiny”), an educational children’s toy manufacturer. Tiny has been unable to turn a profit for the past few years and has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.  Tiny’s primary asset is its manufacturing facility. The location and capabilities of this facility are the key reasons why it represents an acquisition target to Fuzzy. However, Fuzzy is undecided on how it should use Tiny’s factory after the acquisition. The Company will either (1) continue to use the facility to manufacture children’s toys and enter another business line alongside its novelty business or (2) renovate the factory in order to expand its novelty item production capacity to grow its current business. Since the acquisition will be structured as an asset purchase rather than a stock purchase, Fuzzy will not assume the employment relationships with the Tiny employees. In both scenarios, Fuzzy expects to hire all the current Tiny employees; however, the Company believes its current workforce is capable of operating the Tiny facility if necessary. Issues: 1. If Fuzzy decides to operate the factory in its......

Revelation 13

...Revelation, Chapter 13 This will begin by giving you the scripture from the King James Version of the Bible, then will go into our description of what the verses mean. You will be able to read various additional information contained in more specific files under "Research Materials". To skip the Introduction for Revelation chapter 13, Chapter 13 Scripture Begins Here Revelation chapter 13 begins with a beast (the Antichrist) raising up out of the sea which represents the nations of the world. The beast is the Antichrist or the false messiah. He will be the final world ruler, also known as the little horn in the book of Daniel, chapter 7, v.8. "I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn [were] eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things." Antichrist Things during the end times will be chaotic. A time of confusion and uncertainty will cause the people to desperately look for a strong leader that could bring hope and security in a time of fear and apprehension. People will desperately seek a strong, charismatic, authoritative leader who can pull the world back from the very brink of disaster. Those people will get their wish as a powerful, charismatic leader spouting peace and unity comes on the scene. But he will turn out to be much more than they bargained for. He will be a dictator whose cruelty will be more...

Chapter 13

...Chapter 13 Questions 2. If you were an advertising manager for a magazine aimed at senior citizens, what advantages would you cite to potential advertisers? The first thing I would cite to advertisers is that magazines are great for target audiences. Also, magazines last longer than normal print advertisements. Many times you will find magazines that are several months old in doctors offices, waiting rooms, and even in your own home. I would try to sale the flexibility (pg 406) to the potential advertiser. Flexibility gives a farther reach to clients and they are capable of advertising on a broader scale to their target audience. 3. What is the advantage of magazine advertising to businesses that sell to other businesses? The advantage of this is higher quality advertisements. Also by the type of magazine that is being used for advertisements, you are able to better recognize the target audience. Chapter 14 Questions 4. In what ways is cable TV’s selectivity a strength? A drawback? The selectivity of cable TV allows the advertisers to target a specific group of people. A drawback is that the advertisers have to advertise at many different times and on several different channels, making the cost of the advertisement much more expensive. 7. How can radio be best used in an IMC program? Radio reaches a larger audience because many people feel that they are more involved in radio broadcast. Most radio stations and certain......

Apolo 13

..."A 'successful failure' describes exactly what 13 was - because it was a failure in its initial mission -- nothing had really been accomplished," Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13 told Reuters Television in an exclusive interview. But he claimed the mission, which had taken hold the world in April 1970, as "a great success in the ability of people to take an almost certain catastrophe and turn it into a successful recovery." At the time of the oxygen-tank explosion two days into the mission, Lovell, Haise and fellow astronaut Jack Swigert were not fully aware of the seriousness of their situation. "Well, when the explosion occurred and we sort of found out and assessed on our own that we weren't going to land on the moon, the first thoughts were one of disappointment," said Lovell. "We didn't realize the significance or the danger." But soon Lovell realized that so much of the spacecraft was totally useless and he spoke to mission control at the Johnson Space Center in Texas those now-famous words: "Houston, we've had a problem." "The two fuel cells, or the three fuel cells, failed," Lovell said. "The two oxygen tanks failed. We lost communication. We lost the use of our computer for a while. And consequently we had never really practiced for that." For five days, the crew of Apollo 13 and mission specialists on the ground dealt with problem upon problem, shorting of food and water, dealing with a loss of heat and even using the Lunar Module as a so-called "life boat"...
