Opportunistic Rapists
According to by McKibbin, Shackelford, Goetz and Starratt, (2008) the opportunistic rapist is a man who is more likely to engage with women he perceives will be more receptive to his advances. However, he may use force if the women are less receptive or if there is a small chance of negative consequences. These authors theorize that most rapists are able to gauge the vulnerability levels of their intended victims and are able to weigh the likelihood of escaping with little to no negative consequences. The opportunistic rapist is the best at these abilities. Rape, as summarized by these authors, is particularly high during times of war and can be an example of a rapists more willingness to commit this crime because the likelihood of being detected or punished for this crime is particularly low and the vulnerability of his victim is likely increased. The fact that women with adult, male relatives who live with or nearby are far less likely to be raped is seen to be evidence that supports this particular opportunistic theory of rape. It is a society that condones unwanted sexual advances towards women and the threat of sexual violence. These authors state that rape is a global trend and therefore rape has become an accepted possibility in life by both men and women. This solidifies the belief that women are the objects and possessions of men and can be treated as such and in any way they see fit.
