Orange Revolution

The idea of good government, freedom, and independence formulated a vast revolution in Ukraine. The Orange Revolution began late November 2004 and ended January 2005 when Ukrainians protested and overturned a fraudulent presidential election. Acts of civil disobedience, sit-ins, and general strikes caused the Ukraine’s Supreme Court to annul the presidential election results and order a revote. The Revolution was a great success and mandated a change to the Ukrainian constitution that shifted powers from the presidency to the parliament.

Leader of the revolution, President Yushchenko was leader of the Our Ukraine faction in the Ukrainian parliament and a former Prime Minister (1999-2001). During the revolution he was able to keep a protest of hundreds and thousands of people amazingly peaceful. His political camp and supporters used the color orange to signify his election campaign which later represented the series of events to be called the Orange Revolution.

His opponent was Viktor Yanukovych who was the sitting Prime Minister and also largely supported by Leonid Kuchma, the outgoing President of Ukraine who already served two terms in the office and was prohibited from running himself due to the constitutional term limits.

During the 2004 election, Yanukovych had the support from the outgoing president’s administration that had power over government and state apparatus. In September 2004, one month before the first round of votes, Yushchenko suffered from severe dioxin poisoning which nearly killed him. Many say this was planned by his opponents in hope from him becoming President. Although Yushchenko did not die from this horrific experience the poisoning weakened his health and altered his appearance dramatically. But not even the poisoning or the intimidation from Yanukovch powerful team stopped Yushchenko from returning to the campaign trail.

During the first-round vote held on October 31, 2004, Yanukovych collected 39.2% and Yushchenko collected 39.87% of the vote cast. The other candidates collected much less. Since no candidate passed more than 50% of the cast ballots, a run-off vote between the two leading candidates was mandated by Ukrainian law. During the first round of votes many complaints regarding voting errors in favor of the government supporting Yanukovych were raised. These complaints were not pursued and candidates just concentrated on the upcoming run-off scheduled November 21.

Protests began the eve of the second round of voting when the official count differed markedly from exit poll results which gave Yushchenko up to an 11% lead, while official results gave the election win to Yanukovych by 3%. The Yushchenko team publicized evidence of many incidents of electoral fraud in favor of the government-backed Yanukovych. This fraud was witnessed by many local and foreign observers. The Yushchenko campaign publicly called for protest on Election Day, November 21, 2004, when allegations of fraud began to spread. Beginning on November, 22, 2004, massive protests started in cities across Ukraine which attracted as estimated 500,000 participants, who on November 23, 2004, peacefully marched in front of the headquarters of the Verkhovna Rade, the Ukrainian parliament, wearing the orange clothing and waiving orange flags.

On December 3, 2004, Ukraine’s Supreme Court finally broke the political deadlock. The court ordered a re-vote of the run-off to be held on December 26, 2004. This re-vote led to Yushchenko being nominated President of Ukraine.

As part of the Orange Revolution, the Ukrainian constitution was changed to shift powers from the presidency to the parliament. These laws were amended on December 8, 2004 by parliament. It’s sad to say that although the Orange Party achieved freedom and independence through the changes to the constitution it would never have occurred if these people did not continue to protest through acts of civil disobedience to stop the destructive process that had become a characteristic of Ukraine.

Why Did Russian Interfere in the 2005 Ukrainian Election

...Why did Russia interfere in the 2005 Ukrainian Presidential election? Ukraine is Russia's largest European neighbour. Regardless of their common history, Ukrainian domestic policies have a significant impact on Russia's perceived interest. Parts of Ukraine have been under Russian rule sine the 17th century. Eastern parts of Ukraine had been continually subjected to dominance from the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. Western Ukraine did not join the Soviet Union until 1939. The country has a history of fragmentation that continues to this day, this is exasperated Russia's continued desire to meddle in the domestic affairs of former republics of the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union dissolved in in 1991, Ukraine received their independence but there was no great change in policy. Former members of the Communist Party managed to remain power without much difficulty. Opposition parties found it difficult to break their stranglehold on power. In the late Soviet era the Communist Party of Ukraine began to accumulate vast sums of sums of cash.[1] Much of this cash disappeared when the Communist Party disbanded after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However much of this money was reinvested to ensure the same people form the Communist Party stayed in power. Leonid Kuchma was elected President in 2004. he had previously been Prime Minister without much note. However he won the election against incumbent Leonid Kravchuk with 52% of the vote.[2] Due to his election as...

Throughout her treatment process she carried a foul rotten odor (similar something that smelled like metallic) from her body due to the excessive amounts of radiation she was receiving. Lastly, she was unable to sleep or eat. Going to bed and waking up hungry was a bad feeling and was causing her body to deteriorate. Melody did this for weeks until one day while taking a nap GOD came to her in a dream and fed her orange juice. While feeding her the orange juice he said to her, “Always drink orange juice.” Waking from that nap she felt replenished and full. By the time 1997 had rolled around, Melody had completed her radiation treatments. Her cancer had shrunk from the size of a lemon to the size of a sesame seed and has...

Review of God Dies by the Nile

...“She advanced between the two stretches of green and brown with the same swinging movement starting from the hips and thighs. Overhead, the black night withdrew gradually as the crimson hue of dawn spread out, then, after a while, changed into a glaring orange light. Suddenly, over the edge of the earth a point shone out, grew slowly to become a disc of fire, then climbed up into the sky. But before the light of day had chased away the night, Zakeya had already reached her field, tied the buffalo to the water-wheel beside the stream, removed her black shawl and put it on the ground, rolled up her sleeves, and tied the tail of her galabeya around her waist.” This passage is so simple yet so beautifully written, such a poetic description of a woman making her way to work, at sun rise. The writing is vivid and evocative; it makes me rather feel as if I am reading a fable. I didn’t make it through the entire book this week because I was beset with a bunch of issues, including a recurrence of the hives that I’ve been plagued with since the beginning of the summer semester. It is difficult to concentrate on reading when you are itching and irritable; however having made it through more than half of the book, I can see that GOD Dies is full of fascinating characters such as Metwalli and Fatheya. Saadawi writes so strongly and vividly that I can imagine myself as part of the story. She writes a portrait of cruelty and corruption that is at times difficult to take in, to the...

Edward Burtynsky

...Discussion on Edward Burtynsky Edward Burtynsky is undeniably a very smart and talented photographer. In his pictures he is able to evoke emotion from either a natural or a manufactured landscape. When initially looking at his work I feel as though the photographs are nothing more than rocks or oil refineries. I tended to skip through his work very quickly. Upon further analyzing his photography I felt completely different. The photos of all the oil refineries and oil fields brought out sadness in me. It made me sad to see such a substantial piece of land torn up to refine oil/liquid gold. It also angered me to see what we are doing to our natural resources. A lot of his work depicts nature in its purest form. These pictures are so awe inspiring and I think they help put more of an emotional affect on the other photographs. In one slide we see nature at its purest and finest point then in the next slide we see what human manufacturing has done to our planet. It shows how great the impact of manufacturing is taking on the earth. After viewing a lot of Burtynskys projects it gets the viewer wanting to take a call of action. He is very effective at evoking emotion from the viewer through his work. This photograph Oil Fields #19ab by Edward Burtynsky, makes a lasting impression in our minds. It shows the significance of how the oil rigs or drillers take such a substantial toll on our land thus evoking strong emotions out of the viewer. Such an experience is an aesthetic...

The leading fruit juice brands include Real, Onjus, Tropicana, Frooti, Jumpin.  The   fruit drinks are mainly based on oranges, mangoes, pineapples, grapes, apples, guava and tomato. Orange Cake

...Orange Cake Ingredients 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (180gm) 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 pinch of salt (for whipping egg whites) 1/2 cup butter/margarine, at room temperature (112gm) 3/4 cup sugar, grinded (150gm) 2 large eggs (or 3 small ones), at room temperature juice from 1 orange (one third of a cup) zest from 1 orange (about 1 tbsp.) 1 tsp. vanilla essence Simple Orange Glaze Ingredients 1 cup icing sugar 1/4 tsp. orange zest (optional) 4-5 tbsp. freshly squeezed orange juice Instructions  First, separate the yolks from the egg whites. Set aside in different bowls. Grate the zest off the orange using a zester or the fine plane of your grater. Take care to ONLY grate the orange, not the white part (pith). The white part is very bitter and will change the taste of your cake, so keep turning the orange as you zest it. Preheat the oven to 170C. Grease and line an 8" round pan. Beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy. Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Next add the orange juice, vanilla essence and orange zest and beat. Add the flour and beat it in. Set aside. Wash the whisk attachments and dry them well. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until frothy, then add a pinch of salt to them and keep beating until the egg whites form stiff peaks. The salt helps to stabilize the egg whites. Add a third of the egg whites into the cake batter and stir it in with a spatula or wooden spoon...
