Describe the Organization
The purpose is to introduce First Group America and First Student as the largest leading transportation company, between the United Kingdom and the United States. To show how it maintains its status as the leading school bus operator with the largest fleet in the U.S. and Canada.

Description What the Organization Does
First Student is one of five (5) sub-divisions of First Group America’s North America Division. They are First Vehicle which provides vehicle maintenance and ancillary services. First Canada which does school bus transportation, along with transit contracting management services. First Transit provides the transit contracting and management services for the senior citizens and different adult centers and residential homes. Greyhound is also a part of First Group America; they provide scheduled intercity bus transportation services in the United States and Canada. First Student provides the school bus transportation and charter services.
The Customers it serves First Group is the leading transportation operator in the United Kingdom with headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland. First Group has 136,000 employees and they transport approximately 2.5 billion passengers a year. First Student has approximately 600 locations with approximately 1400 school districts, which operate in thirty-eight (38) states and nine (9) Canadian providences. First Student is the leading school bus transportation company in the United States and Canada with an operating fleet of approximately 54,000 school buses. (FirstGroup America, 2013)

The Organization’s Mission
The company’s mission is to be the safest school bus transportation around. They drill safety into the minds of their employees and they strive to give their customers the best service around. They are motto is “If you can’t do it safely, don’t do it”. (First Student, 2013) They set very high standards for their employees. They are very supportive of the workers and they like to see them succeed and achieve goals. They are very customer-centric with the focus on flexibility and accessibility and very committed to the customers’ success. They are in the developing stages of how they can be more environmental conservative and fuel efficient.
Role HR Plays in Fostering the Organizations Mission Statement The role of Human resource manager in First Group America has to be able to make sure that all employees are in compliance. They also have to be up to date with the different states and providences laws and make sure to pass the information on to the proper people. In keeping with the company’s mission statement, they must make sure that the incoming equipment is up to the standards of the company and the contract that it is being used for. They must also be aware of the federal, state, and local ordinances for each business unit. They must know the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) rules and regulations and make sure that the locations are in compliance as well as the American Disabilities Act (ADA). They must also be up to date on the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy and make sure that is being carried out, as well as being a liaison between the managers and employees working closely with the legal department to make sure they are doing everything that is incorporated into the mission statement. The human resource manager must make sure that each business unit manager has the proper training and knowledge of what the different rules and regulations are that pertain to them. They must implement guidelines for these training sessions and make sure that it is being carried out in the proper way.
Common HR Challenges
The challenges that a human resource manager may face is when a new business unit is being opened and there are timelines that have to be followed. There are interviews to be done in order to make sure that the people being hired fit into the mission of the company and have the proper qualifications. You can’t hire a man off the street to run a bus company and he only rode the bus. They have to make sure that a proper background checks, education and work history are good before they can hire a manager, dispatcher, and any other office personnel that are needed to open this location. Once they hire the main staff they have to be educated with the company mission statement, they have to be knowledgeable of the federal, state and local laws for that particular location. They also need to make sure that the people are committed to doing this job because it has a lot of responsibility and you have to be a team player and love what you are about to embark on.
Lack of Skilled Workers When you are opening a new business unit (location), you have to be able to train the people that are not yet qualified to drive a bus. You have give them the proper training materials as well as make sure they have a clean driving record, background and are drug free. Each states wage varies as well as the location. The wages are computed by the different transportation companies in that area. First Student is very competitive with their wages and benefits package. They try to remain on top of the wages so that they keep employees working. The only high turnover problem that I see is at the location level where the employees feel that they are treated like children and talked to any kind of way, by the location staff. The employees have failed random drug test, or their driving record is not where it should be, or they have just quit because they decided to change careers or moved out of the area.
Recommendations
I would recommend a workshops for all full time staff on how to conduct yourself while
In the work environment. How to be the very best professional you can be on the job and off. How to conduct yourself in the public’s view, what to say and what not to say. The proper attire in the workplace. For the part time employees I would make sure that they are up to date on the latest rules and regulations that apply to them and their job. I would also make sure that part time employees know about special needs children and how to professionally deal with them and their disability. I would like to recommend that having an employee appreciation day to show that employees are very valuable.
How will your Recommendations make the Organization more Competitive
I believe my recommendations will make the organization more knowledgeable when it comes to being in the public eye. The company will be known as the people friendly company. That can relate to the different disabilities and people with them. They have the best training program, wages and benefits package. The staff is on point with all of the laws and rules that pertain to the location. Showing your employees that they are appreciated and they will stay with you and recommend people to come work for you.
