Osmotic Regulation of the Renal System: Investigating the Effects of Fasting and the Ingestion of Coke, Water and Gatorade on Urine Flow Rate and Urine Specific Gravity

The purpose of this experiment was to detect how varying conditions had affected the kidney’s homeostatic regulation. There were several conditions that were looked over during the experiment such as urine flow rate and urine specific gravity of adult subjects who have: (1) fasted which was considered as the non-drinking group and (2) fasting which was then replaced by fluids known as the drinking group. The procedures instructions were from the Human Physiology Laboratory Manual (Manuguid & Tidyman 2014). Each participant was told to not eat or drink within five hours before the lab, though were able to an drink 8 oz. cup of water while in the first two hours of fasting. Participants were asked to fully empty their bladders and record their time of void an hour before the lab had begun. Each participant was then divided into four different groups: (1) non-drinking, (2) water, (3
) coke, (4) Gatorade. The participants had randomly chose which group they were in while entering the classroom. After choosing their groups each subject had to calculate their consumption of the fluid, if they were in a drinking group based on their body weight. Results

Figure 1. The x interval labeled as “Time of Void”. T=0 is the first interval which was then followed with three other intervals every 30 minutes after the interval that came before it. The y interval labeled as “ Average Urine Flow Rate” was measured in mL/min. The sample size was 20 students. A standard error bar was represented +/- for the standard error of mean within the data. Figure 1 demonstrates that the Gatorade group had the highest urine flow rate followed by water, Coke and the non-drinking group.
