Baco Bacon: The Four Cultures Of American Culture

...look around here in America, you see many cultures that follow Bacon’s idea of four idols, “idol of the tribe, cave, marketplace, and theater”.(Jacobus 592) These idols represent different things to many cultures. As a whole America, is progressively moving towards representing all four of these idols in everyday life. One of Bacon’s idols mentioned is the Idol of the Tribe. This idol, “[has] their foundation in human nature itself”(Jacobus 594). This means people are more likely to follow human nature such as exaggeration. In our culture, we see celebrities exaggerating photos with photo shop. This in turn makes the rest of our culture, because of human nature, follow these people and try to emulate them....

The Nature of

...God The Nature of God Barbara J. DeYoung University of St. Francis Abstract Through the reading of the book of Genesis and Exodus, one would almost say that God is a merciless God of punishment and rules. The truth is God is the same in the Old Testament and the New Testament of the Bible. We are just seeing different attributes of God at different times. God does not change, he is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. Keywords: Faith, Old Testament, God The Nature of God The Nature of God: The Old Testament The book of Genesis opens with an omnipresent (or everywhere present) God creating the world that we know today. How is it possible to be in all places at once? David asked the same question in Psalms 139:7-10 “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.” (Bible, KJV) God is everywhere at the same time, but we can be separated from God. God is “everywhere” present, but this does not mean that we are continuously with God. We can be separated from God as we read in Isaiah 59:2 “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear?” The Bible clearly states that iniquities (sin) can separate us from God...

Hallyu in Vietnnam

...is not an exception of this trend. The Doi Moi in 1986, which gave a motivation of media exchange, is the leverage for Korean Wave to come to Vietnam. However until the late 1990s and soon 2000s, the Korean wave has started pervaded into Vietnam through some dramas such as: Autumn Fairly Tale," "Winter Sonata" and "Daejanggeum (Huong Dang, 2009). At that time, the Korean film had gradually altered the Chinese films. The Hallyu wave has strongly in infiltrated in recent years via the music from Korean idol. The K-Pop has influenced much to the young generation, which creates a huge impact on Vietnam. Although Korean wave affects variety aspects, this paper will partly analyze the effects of Hallyu on a fraction of Vietnamese’s culture. The domain that will be focused is the influences of Hallyu wave to the young generation of Vietnam. II. Researching: It is easy to see that Korea dramas are dominating the airtime on television channel, from the North to the South. Everyday at least two to four Korean dramas are broadcasted. Taking the BTV channel as an example. Within 9 hours, there are two Korean dramas are shown on TV. This is a schedule of a general channel; if we consider the entertained or movie channel, the number of Korean films broadcasted will be more. Madonna's Influence On American Culture

...An American experience can be vastly different for each individual. Thus, the exact reason why America is so unique and diverse. Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone is her own person and is confident in everything she does. She is my idol, and I have personally been to her concerts and plan to attend more. Even though Madonna is 58 years old, she preforms better than most people my age. She has lived her American dream of being a singer, songwriter, mother, and actress. She has achieved this dream by pushing the social boundaries of everyday life. Hence, why it is so inspirational to learn about her American experience Madonna’s early life portrays vastly the image of herself now. Through all her troubles she faced, she was able to make them into her muse, which made her music resemble her whole self. Madonna was born in Michigan to parents Silvio “Tony” Ciccone and Madonna Fortin. Since Madonna had the same first name as her mother, family members would call her by the nickname “Little Nonni”. Relevance of Rizal to Contemporary Nationalism

...sparked the 1896 revolution against the Spaniards. He gave importance to education, our freedom, promoting peace and equality, being proud of our filipino heritage, and many more. Although, while I was growing up, he was never one of my idols, or someone i really looked up to. I never really felt Rizal’s importance and presence in our culture. In fact, if not for this paper, the importance of Jose Rizal would have never crossed my mind. Dr. Jose Rizal was nothing more than another lesson to learn about in History to me. I knew he was many things, and contributed a lot of things to the country but all of these didn’t really mean that much to me. The Relevance of Rizal today, is something I have yet to discover in writing this paper. Growing up, I was in an environment highly influenced by the western culture. The school I was in, in my grade school years was a school where not many of the kids knew how to speak straight tagalog. We struggled with our Filipino classes and this resulted to really easy Filipino lessons because the teachers knew we were not very good at it. Looking back, I realize that the lessons we had in my grade school were extremely easy, compared to the ones they would have in other schools. We barely used Tagalog or Filipino at home. English was the first language taught to the children in our family and Filipino was only learned in school. Filipino was used when speaking to our helpers and the drivers, and those who we knew could not speak English fluently...

Blessing

...‘Everyday is a blessing. And I want today to be a day full of appreciation for everyone who has ever come into my life. From the little child I see passing on the street babbling adorable baby talk that makes me smile, to the feeble but amazingly kind and warm old woman that takes time to say ‘hello, darling, you alright?’ when she runs into you even though she’s a stranger. Everyday a complete stranger smiles at you, not because they get anything out of it, but because your face ticked something inside them that made them want to make you smile. Isn’t that great?   Those silly yet wonderful people called friends that we have around us and in our hearts, how can we not be grateful for them? What would we do without those who would be ready to make you a cuppa hot chocolate in the middle of the night when you’re having an emotional breakdown, or when dance with you on ridiculous music so loud that all you hear and feel is exhilaration and absolute joy?   That best friend we know we all call a ‘sibling’, the annoying devil we all love to hate when they  don’t get along with us, but run to when nothing else in the world makes sense. I, for one, can say I’m blessed to have the best sister in the world. A true friend, always there to tell you what no one might say , always looking out for you, regardless of their age, always protective and proud of you and so excited to be a part of every joy you share. I can’t think of siblings as anything less than the sweet little angel god...

Evan 101 Testimony Paper

...Him in Heaven. Accepting Christ to live in your heart requires four steps. The first step is to agree with God that you live a sinful life, you are not a perfect person, but Jesus was. The second step is to believe that Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit. You must also believe that any other idol in your life, money, food, work, another person, etc. is a sin. God should be the center of attention in your life and you should strive to know Him more everyday and grow a strong, personal relationship with Him. The third step is to really believe that the only way man could be saved from our sins is when Jesus was crucified on the cross. If Jesus had not given His own life, man would have to suffer for our sins. The last step to having faith in God believes that he rose from the dead three days after dying on the cross. This proves to us that not only can Jesus conquer spiritual death, but also physical death. With God ALL things are possible. God performed so many miracles and still does everyday. All we have to do is believe that what the Bible says is true. When we decide to live for Christ after we ask Him to live in our hearts, He will work miracles and write us a wonderful story with our lives. Why would someone want to pass up an opportunity for eternal life in Heaven rather then a burning,...

Yet, as the rate of open homosexuality increases in the United States, there are a stir of arguments that opposed same sex marriage. Over the past few years, the media regarding this issue has created a large debate. Celebrities

...being constantly judged, disturbance by the paparazzi, attracting dangerous types of people and so on. But why do some people still seek to be famous at all costs? And has celebrity-status become the new normal? These are some of the questions Donna Rockwell raises with her article called ‘’Mindfulness in Everyday Life -- So You Want to Be Famous? What You Need to Know About Celebrity’’’, in which she gives the readers an interpretation of what she finds useful knowledge, before you suddenly decide to reach for fame. Our society has never existed of so many ‘’wannabe’’ celebrities, than it does now. You don’t have to have any specific talent to get recognition and attention from a bigger audience, and as Rockwell persuades in her article: ‘’Celebrity has been watered down considerably since those innocent days, when being called a celebrity really meant something’’ (P.1, l.7). We are witnesses to a culture that breads mass productions of willingly fame seekers, who cant be compared to legends like ‘’ Picasso, Princess Grace, Sidney Poitier, Frank Sinatra…’’(P.1, l.9). Donna Rockwell describes us as daily unknowledgeable consumers of celebrity gossip. ‘’The evolution of our celebrity-driven society finds us the unwitting consumers of celebrity "news’’. (P.1, l.13)." The author gives many examples in the article, to clarify her statements and knowledge about fame and celebrity. She includes experienced people like Simon Cowell and John Waters, who as a specific view on...

An Analysis of "The Allegory of the Cave"

...return to the everyday world of politics, greed and power struggles. The Allegory also attacks people who rely upon or are slaves to their senses. The chains that bind the prisoners are the senses. The fun of the allegory is to try to put all the details of the cave into your interpretation. In other words, what are the models the guards carry? the fire? the struggle out of the cave? the sunlight? the shadows on the cave wall? Socrates, in Book VII of The Republic, just after the allegory told us that the cave was our world and the fire was our sun. He said the path of the prisoner was our soul's ascent to knowledge or enlightenment. He equated our world of sight with the intellect's world of opinion. Both were at the bottom of the ladder of knowledge. Our world of sight allows us to "see" things that are not real, such as parallel lines and perfect circles. He calls this higher understanding the world "abstract Reality" or the Intelligeble world. He equates this abstract reality with the knowledge that comes from reasoning and finally understanding. On the physical side, our world of sight, the stages of growth are first recognition of images (the shadows on the cave wall) then the recognition of objects (the models the guards carry) To understand abstract reality requires the understanding of mathematics and finally the forms or the Ideals of all things (the world outside the cave). But our understanding of the physical world is mirrored in our minds by our ways of thinking...

Jehoshaphat

...Jehoshaphat Submitted By: Timothy L. Rhiney OTS 315 Ancient Israel Dr. Hannah Harrington February 21, 2012 Introduction Thesis Statement of Points The power of God A. Pray and seek the Lord God Answers Jehoshaphat's prayers So why pray? A. Prayer admits our own limitations B. Prayer opens our eyes to the power of God IV. Conclusion/Summary Bibliography Introduction: There's a story in the Old Testament that people of God are faced with everyday. A situation that is utterly outside their control, a situation that threatens to completely destroy them; one they have absolutely no resources for and no ability to stop, and in which they are at a complete loss as to what to do. It's the kind of story in which, in their utter helplessness, they cry out to God and find that He comes to their rescue marvelously so that, though they started out with fear and trembling, they end with joy and rejoicing. Let’s take a look at the story about Jehoshaphat himself. A few generations before Jehoshaphat was born, all the twelve tribes of Israel had constituted one great nation. But King Solomon had failed to remain faithful to God; and so, the kingdom became divided under the reign of his son Rehoboam. The southern kingdom, Judah, was passed on to Rehoboam's son Abijah, then to Abijah's son Asa, and then to Asa's son Jehoshaphat...
