Our First Day In India

“BEEP, BEEP, BEEP” A huge rush of adrenaline ran through my body as mopeds and rickshaws sped through the cramped streets of Old Delhi. Christmas day was our first day in India. My family along with a family friend traveled to India for a cultured experience. We had a guide who gave us a tour around using public transportation. He took us down to Old Delhi, where we then went walking through the narrow, grimy streets for what felt like hours on end. Once we got off the metro, my eyes were fixated on looking in front of me so I wouldn’t lose the guide in the massive crowd. Every now and then I would glimpse back to make sure my mom and everyone else was following. There was no time to observe the street culture, the shops, or the people and the colorful saris that they wore. It was a constant go-go-go situation until we made it to a calmer location. Every now and then our tour guide would stop and tell us some historical facts here and there. He had us stop at this intersection of the streets and told us to look up at this old house. He asked a simple question “Can you guess how much that house cost? In US dollars” he added. We made our guesses none of them were above two hundred thousand dollars and wow that was way too much for that …show more content…
There was so much filth and garbage surrounding the streets. There were so many homeless dogs and not too many homeless people which surprised me a bit. The jam-packed streets were filled with every age range of people out swarming the streets of Old Delhi running their shops, selling nick nacks, and doing their daily shopping. The continuous sound of beeping throughout the streets was neverending even throughout the early hours of the morning. There was a constant disgusting odor of urine and landfill wherever we walked. Walking the streets of Old Delhi on Christmas day was truly one to never

Indian Culture

...Indian culture The culture of India is among the world's oldest, reaching back about 5,000 years. Many sources describe it as "Sa Prathama Sanskrati Vishvavara" — the first and the supreme culture in the world. India is a very diverse country, and different regions have their own distinct cultures. Language, religion, food and the arts are just some of the various aspects of Indian culture. Here is a brief overview of the culture of India. Language India has 28 states and seven territories, and each has at least one official language. While the national languages are Hindi and English, there are about 22 official languages and nearly 400 living languages spoken in various parts of the country. Most of the languages of India belong to two families, Aryan and Dravidian. Religion India is identified as the birthplace of Hinduism and Buddhism. A huge majority — 84 percent — of the population identifies as Hindu. There are  many variations of Hinduism, and four predominant sects — Shaiva, Vaishnava, Shakteya and Smarta. About 13 percent of Indians are Muslim, making it one of the largest Islamic nations in the world. Christians and Sikhs make up a small percentage of the population, and there are even fewer Buddhists and Jains. Food Indian cuisine boasts Arab, Turkish and European influences. It is known for its large assortment of dishes and its liberal use of herbs and spices. Cooking styles vary from region to region. Wheat, Basmati rice and pulses with chana...

...to finance the growing trade between Europe, India and China. The inspiration behind the founding of the bank was Thomas Sutherland, a Scot who was then working for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. He realized that there was considerable demand for local banking facilities in Hong Kong and on the China coast and he helped to establish the bank, which opened in Hong Kong in March 1865 and in Shanghai a month later. Soon after its formation the bank opened agencies and branches around the world. Although that network reached as far as Europe and North America, the emphasis was on building up representation in China and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region. HSBC was a pioneer of modern banking practices in a number of countries. In Japan, where a branch was established in 1866, the bank acted as adviser to the government on banking and currency. In 1888, it was the first bank to be established in Thailand, where it printed the country’s first banknotes. From the outset trade finance was a strong feature of the local and international business of the bank, an expertise that has been recognized throughout its history. Bullion, exchange, merchant banking and note issuing also played an important part. By the 1880s, the bank was acting as banker to the Hong Kong government and also participated in the management of British government accounts in China, Japan, Penang and Singapore. In 1874 the bank handled China’s first public loan and thereafter issued most of China’s...

India's Nuclear Policy

...India has an age old tradition of being peace loving country and this, it has depicted in all its activities and attitudes through the ages. But, with the growth of Science and Technology, the world has gone far ahead in using its knowledge of Science as an instrument of destruction. The movement of the world in its knowledge of Science has been thought provoking for the Indians also, and they have had to do some rethinking in the matter. Immediately after independence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India started building friendships with other countries but, somehow, since its very inception, our relations with our closet neighbor Pakistan, have been mutually lacking in trust, and as such they remained strained always. During the span of 25 years, from 1948 to 1971, India has three wars thrust upon it by Pakistan, which India obviously had to fight. In the year 1962, a war was also thrust upon India by another neighbor Chin. It is with this background that, India had to review its defense policy and defense budget. This it had to do only to be able to defend itself from onslaughts of others. Even after the wars India had to fight, in its thinking and attitude of not fighting. India did not undergo any change, but, it also realized that, with others continuing to advance in destructive management, India had to develop its knowledge of destruction, only if it was to save itself. With this background, and the scenario of the world India...

...My dear fellow-citizens, Brothers, sisters and dear children, I greet you all on this Independence Day. Today is certainly a day of joy for us. But on this celebration of independence we also feel pain in our hearts that our brothers and sisters in uttrakhand had to face devastation about two months back. Our deepest sympathies are with all the families that suffered loss of life or property. I want to assure the people of Uttarakhand today that the whole country stands with them in this moment of crisis. Our government is working with all the resources at its command to rehabilitate those whose houses have been destroyed and rebuild damaged infrastructure. Our army, paramilitary forces and numerous officers and staff of the Central and State governments worked in difficult conditions in partnership with the common people to perform an outstanding task in providing relief to those who were stranded. We especially pay homage to the officers and men of the Air Force, ITBP and NDRF who sacrificed their lives to save others. We are also deeply pained that we lost the submarine, INS Sindurakshak in an accident yesterday. Eighteen brave sailors are feared to have lost their lives. The accident is all the more painful because the Navy had recently achieved two major successes in the form of its first nuclear submarine, INS Arihant and the aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. We pay homage to the brave hearts we have lost. We also congratulate the Navy on its successes. Brothers and...

Reliance

...RELIANCE COMMUNICATION [pic] [pic] INTRODUCTION A DREAM COME TRUE The Late Dhirubhai Ambani dreamt of a digital India — an India where the common man would have access to affordable means of information and communication. Dhirubhai, who single-handedly built India’s largest private sector company virtually from scratch, had stated as early as 1999: “Make the tools of information and communication available to people at an affordable cost. They will overcome the handicaps of illiteracy and lack of mobility.” It was with this belief in mind that Reliance Communications (formerly Reliance Infocomm) started laying 60,000 route kilometres of a pan-India fibre optic backbone. This backbone was commissioned on 28 December 2002, the auspicious occasion of Dhirubhai’s 70th birthday, though sadly after his unexpected demise on 6 July 2002. Reliance Communications has a reliable, high-capacity, integrated (both wireless and wireline) and convergent (voice, data and video) digital network. It is capable of delivering a range of services spanning the entire infocomm (information and communication) value chain, including infrastructure and services — for enterprises as well as individuals, applications, and consulting. Today, Reliance Communications is revolutionising the way India communicates and networks, truly bringing about a new way of life. INDIA ’S LEADING INTEGRATED TELECOM COMPANY Reliance Communications is the flagship company of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG)...

A Tryst with Destiny

...time comes when we shall redeem our pledge,” Just before midnight hour on the 14th of August Jawerharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, speaks these words of poetry and sends India into its first day of freedom. The speech Prime Minister Nehru gives in August 1947, which makes India a country of its own and frees it from the English rule. This speech differs from so many others speeches given by prime ministers all over the world, because Nehru does not bring that many political factors into it. In fact this speech seems more like a piece of poetry celebrating India as land of beauty and its people capable of standing united and achieve greatness. Though the speech is poetic, so much that you might forget its purpose, if you look closely, you can see that Nehru is not only praising his country and countrymen, but is using clear technics to draw in the people of India and to stand united as this new nation. As a very clear example, that fills most of Nehru’s speech, is the poetics phrases that Nehru is constantly using. This poetry and plans for the future, brings India together by giving them something to stand together about. Nehru goes specifically after this, when he calls India “she” in the sentence “Through good and ill fortune alike she has never lost sight of the quest or forgotten the ideals whish gave her strength” Nehru gives India a well-deserved boost of national felling and confidence, which was much needed since India might have lost that feeling after...

Coke India Study

...Coca-Cola India On August 20, 2003 Sanjiv Gupta, President and CEO of Coca-Cola India, sat in his office contemplating the events of the last two weeks and debating his next move. Sales had dropped by 30-40%1 in only two weeks on the heels of a 75% five-year growth trajectory and 25-30%2 year-to-date growth. Many leading clubs, retailers, restaurants, and college campuses across the country had stopped selling Coca-Cola3 and only six weeks into his new role as CEO, Gupta was embroiled in a crisis that threatened the momentum gained from a highly successful two-year marketing campaign that had given Coca-Cola market leadership over Pepsi. On August 5th, The Center for Science and Environment (CSE), an activist group in India focused on environmental sustainability issues (specifically the effects of industrialization and economic growth) issued a press release stating: "12 major cold drink brands sold in and around Delhi contain a deadly cocktail of pesticide residues" (See Exhibit 1). According to tests conducted by the Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) of the CSE from April to August, three samples of twelve PepsiCo and Coca-Cola brands from across the city were found to contain pesticide residues surpassing global standards by 30-36 times including lindane, DDT, malathion and chlorpyrifos (See Exhibit 2). These four pesticides were known to cause cancer, damage to the nervous and reproductive systems, birth defects, and severe disruption of the immune system.4 In reaction...
