Discuss how the employee selection methods at Outback Steak house help the organization achieve a competitive advantage. The selection process allows for them to pick the employee’s that best fit the company’s profile. The process seems to be laid back with an introduction to the company. The company takes time to allow for the candidate to be familiar with what the company expects from them. This also allows for the applicant to see if they can meet the company standards. If the applicant feels that they cannot meet the standards they can dropout and the company has not wasted any money on training the applicant. We share a document, called a dimension of performance, which provides detailed examples of the kinds of Behaviors expected of outbackers and how Those behaviors are tied to the vision of Outback. This is a candidate’s first exposure to our vision. (At this point, some candidates have withdrawn from The process because these dimensions set a very high standard.) (Stewart 234) The competitive edge this gives the company is that it is able to be very selective about their employees. This method saves them money on training candidates that don’t fit the company profile. This allows for them to hire people who have the company’s beliefs and able to adapt to the company’s policies. With this method of hiring it saves on the bottom line of the company. The money they would have wasted on training someone who didn’t fit into the company profile ends up on their bottom line. Outback has saved thousand s of dollars on training someone that didn’t support the outback beliefs.
Discuss the importance of fit to Outback Steakhouse. The fit for Outback Steakhouse is very important to them because they have an image to uphold. They want people who believe in what the company stands for in the public eye. They want people to who can represent that image to the public. The people they hire are a reflection of them. They want people who feel that they can do the job they have applied for. When Outback Steakhouse does their hiring and selection process the applicant has a good idea of what is expected of that applicant. The applicant is given ample time to back out before moving on in the selection process. When selecting applicants for jobs at Outback Steakhouse they are looking for people who will be with the company for the long-term. These applicants will stay and grow with the company.
Evaluate Outback’s Selection process including the order of selection methods such that applicants first complete application, then complete tests and then participate in interviews. The outback selection process seems like a good process. The applicants are given an actual job description of what is expected of them. The job description is a real job preview and what the job looks like and can you actually do that job. They tell them how they will be held accountable for the performance of their job. Outback then gives them examples of the kind of behaviors that they are expected to show or perform. The dimensions are very highly set for outback. After this stage a lot of applicants forfeit because they cannot meet Outback’s standards. The next step is doing an application for the company where it will be reviewed for hire. They will be assessed for cognitive, personality and judgment based on successful company workers. They then have an interview question that probes the person’s judgment. The process is a very good and thorough but a very long process. The process gives the employer’s a chance to see the applicant at different phrases. The applicant has a chance to see if they fit with this company. The company saves money on training applicants who does not fit the company beliefs. The applicant finds out that they may not work for the company’s fit. The process allows for Outback to get prime candidates after their long process.
Evaluate whether or not these selections methods are valid. The method is valid because the company is able to weed out people who just want a job and people who are there for the long run with the company. The company is able to watch the applicant threw different stages of the hiring process. The process also allows for the hiring manager to watch the applicant while asking them questions about the job they will perform. The process allows for the company to have a pool to pull from to have the best working for them.
