Overcoming Challenges to Personal Growth

I had always enjoyed caring for the elderly, so when I first received my practical nursing license, working in long term care seemed like an obvious choice. Little did I know, my career path was about to take a drastic shift. Being thrown into the world of hospice only three months into my nursing career terrified me, brought on a great deal of anxiety, and made me contemplate quitting. It was a path that I would not have chosen on my own, but it wound up being a path that would change every aspect of my life. Caring for hospice patients made me a better nurse, a better mother, a better wife, and an all-around better human being. As an eager new nurse, fresh out of school, I applied to the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospital. I had my eye on their long term care unit since I did a clinical rotation there in nursing school. It had everything I wanted in my first nursing job: familiarity, structure, and a patient demographic that I was very comfortable with. I was hired, and I quickly adapted to the duties of my job. All of my dreams had been attained, or so I thought. My unit received notice that the long term care patients would be moved to a separate, stand-alone nursing home. Our unit would be converted to inpatient hospice. Hearing the news made me feel sick to my stomach. The thought of caring for dying patients made me extremely uncomfortable, and I hadn’t even been employed there long enough to be eligible for a transfer to another unit. Financially, quitting was not an option. I promised myself that I would stick with it through the transition and training period, and after that, one day at a time. After six weeks of training and working with experienced hospice nurses, I started to warm up to the specialty. While stressful at times, it wasn’t nearly as scary as my mind had perceived it to be. I met some truly amazing people, patients and coworkers alike. I gained a great respect for death and the dying process. I learned to place greater value in the people who are important to me, for we are all here for just a short period of time. The people I met, and the lessons I learned in my three years as a hospice nurse have left an imprint on the core of my being that will remain with me for a lifetime. There were many tears, but those tears were balanced with equal amounts of gratification. That was nine years ago, and although I’ve moved on from the hospice field, I took away a very valuable lesson. Fear of unknown situations is only temporary, and running away from those fears might cause me to miss out on a life-changing experience. There is a lot of unknown in the world, but now, rather than fear the unknown; I am more inclined to embrace it. There’s almost always a new skill or life lesson to be learned.

Leadership and Communication

...initiate one simple theory, that leaders are unable to be successful without the support of their employees and/or supporters. Nonetheless, they can only collaborate in an operational direction by having an unrestrained form of communication. It is imperative that all forms of leadership seek and fulfill communication strategies to create happy employees or supporters. Additionally, while seeking effective communication strategies, leaders must learn how to overcome the barriers that can diminish communication. These almost create a sort of cause and effect feeling with one another. Above all, leaders cannot expect to create a successful business or entity by only leading themselves; a leader must consistently seek self-growth all the while encouraging empowerment and growth among them. Communication Strategies To begin, good communication is a “bridge to worker loyalty” (Mayfield, 2002). Creating worker loyalty produces motivation, dedication, better performances, and a strong support team that will stand behind a leader. Predominantly obtaining employee commitment contributes to the overall views of the business or entity, without these factors a business will not succeed because they are acting alone like Thomas Friedman mentions in his quote. According to Cascio (1998), Commitment also explains more than 34% of employee turnover. And this outcome can cost organizations an estimated 100% to 150% of the departing worker’s...

The Change Master is flexible and motivates others to engage in meaningful change. In addition, principals are visionaries guided by a mission. To improve success for teachers and students, the leader must be willing to identify the problem, generate possible solutions, formulate a plan of action, and monitor the effectiveness of the plan. Traits of the Change Master are evident when results are exemplified by the following benchmarks: instigate changes in challenges, procure funds, motivate change in others, create a positive culture, and provide stability to sustain change....

Communication

... Write a reflective report that explains your thoughts on the article’s key issue or challenge as it will develop over the next three to five years. I chose to read, Sinickas, A. (June 1, 2001). Communicating is not optional, in the Harvard Management Communication Letter. Main reason for this selection is communication is everything in this day in age, no matter what profession or career path you've chosen. Do a quick search on google and see whether communication is optional. Interview a top executive in a Fortune 500 company, and you will 9 times out of 10 end up with the same results, and that is, communication should never be optional. A few challenges and issues that may develop over the course of years may include: personal issues, lack of feedback, handling of unwanted criticism, dealing with a crisis, using excessive jargon, and dealing with rejection. I scrolled through several articles published in the Houston Chronicle, small business section and noticed these same areas mentioned above occur in every business or organization with communication barriers. According to one of those aritcles from the Houston Chronicle, written by George Root III, effective communication in a workplace is ba sed on professional correspondence designed to assist in the daily operation of the company or the continued growth of the organization (Root, George N., III). When employees allow personal issues to affect company communication, a communication problem develops that could take...

Winding Road to Success

...The Winding Road to Success HCS/504 01,23,2012 Dr. Tracy Lane The Winding Road to Success The winding road to success is a road that leads to personal and professional growth. This road is not a road without challenges or obstacles. Her professional goal of becoming a health care organization’s administrator or chief executive officer is dependent on successful completion of her graduate degree in Master’s of Health Administration. Her dreams of completing a master’s degree and subsequently earning a doctoral degree have been her personal goals for many years. Achieving both her personal and professional goals would amplify her professional career. Pursuing her graduate degree has been a personal goal of hers dating back to her adolescent years. She is a strong advocate for continuing education and firm believer that education is the key to success. Openjuru (2011) stated “lifelong learning and lifelong education are two concepts that aim at widening access to and the participation of adult learners in the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, values and attitudes” (p. 55). She chose to pursue her graduate degree to improve her job skills and performance, advance her career, increase her financial earnings, and to influence her family’s desire to achieve more. According to a study conducted by Schlechter and Milevsky (2010) “parents with higher levels of education are effecting their children’s...

Is Rohner a Failure

...Rohner, one would have to consider the criteria by which success is defined. Rohner’s intention to create a sustainable product and company has been achieved and therefore meets the entrepreneur’s intentions, which likely defines success in their eyes. In the case of Rohner, it is not necessary to be the cheapest product, or to own the largest market share in order to be successful. (Esty & Winston, 2009) The fact that they are sustaining their business, taking care of the employees, community and their customers handily defines success. In fact, most business owners gain their greatest satisfaction from creating things and seeing their ideas through to fruition. (Hill, n.d.) The personal satisfaction of seeing an idea come to life with ones name/brand and overcoming the challenges of starting a business is enough to define success for many people. The social aspect of what Rohner has accomplished should also help define success. The good jobs, training and skills they teach their workers help define success. The wages they pay get circulated back into the community and reinvested as well. Satisfied, long-term employees are the best advertising that money can buy and it appears that Rohner has that covered as well. Perhaps the most important definition of success is that Rohner is achieving its vision of building and distributing eco-friendly fabrics. By all accounts, our Capitalist American System rewards behaviors that tend to define success in a perverse...

...In a world full of fear and hatred, burning rampidly through many men, growth has been halted. Not growth as in height, or weight, but growth of character, growth of personality, of temperament. Having the capability to broaden the mind and expand personal boundaries and push the limits chosen to be accepted, that is when mankind will prosper. Accepting oneself and discovering purpose in ones abilities, that is when mankind will prosper. Facing challenges and overcoming obstacles, exceeding the physical boundaries of the human body, that is when mankind will prosper. Through reflection, personal growth is the ability to change the thinking, behaviors, and beliefs of an individual, which are found present in the book The Other Wes Moore, the commencement speech by Neil Gaiman, and the song A Change is Gonna Come. Why College Important

...President Barack Obama stated “Higher Education cannot be a luxury; it is an economic imperative that every family in America should be afforded”. Based on today’s society college education is a very significant stepping stone ensuring a better life and various career prospects in our economy. College is therefore, important to me as it allows personal growth, by enhancing my knowledge. Which has open doors to opportunities, I would not have otherwise. More importantly, college is important to me not only to make myself proud but to be a role model to my children. To show them that despite what obstacles stand in a person’s way, they should never give up. Being a young, single minority mother with two children and only a high school diploma, I was not afforded the opportunities to acquire certain jobs. This made me realized the importance of furthering my education. Many personal experiences have influenced my understanding that without a college education I will not be able to provide financially for my family and to give them the foundation which they need to succeed. Abraham Lincoln quoted that one should, “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” It is often perceived that having children at a young age would halt my opportunities to obtain a college education or opportunities for me to have a productive life, however, that perception was wrong. Like other parents I have been repeating the mantras, “go to school” and “education...
