Food Packaging in Nigeria: Roles, Materials and Environmental Issues

...INTRODUCTION: There is a general belief that packaging of Nigerian food products lacks the quality that can make them competitive in the local and global markets. Although some of the locally made products are considered to be of high quality and unique, but it is still very unfortunate that they are not accepted as good packaged food products, to enable them to be sold successfully in the local and global markets. Most of the packaging materials used are not environmentally-friendly, they are not designed properly while others get their food products spoilt, as a result of poor packaging system, leading to huge capital losses to manufacturers of such products, not to talk of the huge environmental problems caused by non-biodegradable materials used. The problem of poor packaging of locally made food products took a centre stage, after the Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authourity Decree 1992 was established by the Nigerian government to assist the export of Made-in-Nigeria products to the global market. It was then discovered that most of the exported food products to the international market could not be sold because of some of the above mentioned issues. Many efforts have been made by the various stakeholders in the packaging and export sector ever since to solve the poor packaging problem of locally made food products. In spite of all these efforts, the problem still persists. There are many factors that may contribute to poor or substandard packaging. Factors such as......

Food Packaging & Envrronmental Effect

...JFS R: Concise Reviews/Hypotheses in Food Science Food Packaging—Roles, Materials, and Environmental Issues KENNETH MARSH, PH.D., AND BETTY BUGUSU, PH.D. The Institute of Food Technologists has issued this Scientific Status Summary to update readers on food packaging and its impact on the environment. Keywords: food packaging, food processing dvances in food processing and food packaging play a primary role in keeping the U.S. food supply among the safest in the world. Simply stated, packaging maintains the benefits of food processing after the process is complete, enabling foods to travel safely for long distances from their point of origin and still be wholesome at the time of consumption. However, packaging technology must balance food protection with other issues, including energy and material costs, heightened social and environmental consciousness, and strict regulations on pollutants and disposal of municipal solid waste. Municipal solid waste (MSW) consists of items commonly thrown away, including packages, food scraps, yard trimmings, and durable items such as refrigerators and computers. Legislative and regulatory efforts to control packaging are based on the mistaken perception that packaging is the major burden of MSW. Instead, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that approximately only 31% of the MSW generated in 2005 was from packaging-related materials, including glass, metal, plastic, paper, and paperboard—a percentage that has......

...Thesis: The challenges of being a single parent include managing finances, responsibilities and resources The challenge of being a single parent has become harder over time. The fact is that over time things have changed but not for a single parent. Statics show that there has been a steady rise for five decades and that the births to unmarried women has crossed a threshold. An example of this would be, a single mom that can’t provide day care for her child because her income is not enough to pay the bills and day care. The challenges of being a single parent include, managing finances, responsibilities and resources, their work is never done nor are their struggles. One of the challenges a single mom has raising her son and daughter would be getting up at 4am taking 3 buses to transport her children to her mother (who lives on the other side of town). Spending 2 hours getting there and another 3 buses and a hour and a half getting to work. There is a limit on everything she does because she does not have the opportunity to get an education, she has to work and provide for her family. Pawning valuables to make ends meet when money is short, living from pay check to pay check. Child support is another challenge for a single mom when the children’s father does not work, all the financial responsibility is on the single parent. Another challenge to a single mom is that because she is a woman, to keep from being taken advantage of, she will pay more money for rent to......

Case Henkel Ibérica (a)

...Case Henkel Ibérica (A) The case tells about the big conglomerate Henkel KgaA and its challenges in highly competed business area, the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG). Henkel Spain, the Spanish subsidiary of the German company Henkel KgaA, has noticed that the skyrocketing level of sales promotions and the complexity of the laundry detergent portfolio have seriously taxed their sales, production, and distibution systems. Stock keeping units (SKU) have almost tripled in five years because of new product launches, brand variations, and special product packaging. Now Esteban Garriga, customer service director at Henkel Iberica, is questioning whether Collaborative Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment (CPFR) would help manage retail promotions and limit their impact on the stock-outs and obsolete inventory. Many in the organization also believe that the company should abandon or cut back promotions and adopt an everyday low pricing strategy. Henkel uses special promotions, instead of straight price promotions, such as more product for the same price, specially bundled products, and coupons or free items attached to the package. These promotions are retailer-specific, therefore there is a need for a wide variations of different kind of packagings. The product offerings have become more complex and Henkel and retailers find it more difficult to develop an accurate sales forecast and demand planning systems, which lead to higher levels of obsolete and out-of stock......
