Palindrome: A Short Story

What do you do if you stumble across your ex’s profile that you hadn’t seen in years? Perhaps this ex was your first love and you knew them since you were six years old. Would you scroll aimlessly through every post, picture, and update? Would old memories resurface the farther you went back? Three, six, nine, twelve years into their feed and everything moves to the forefront of your mind almost as vivid as the first time it happened. What about after you reached the final post? You might just click off their page and return to whatever you were looking at before you came across their page and that was that. It seems like the logical thing to do, or at least what most people do. However, it is hardly that easy to just forget. Nate …show more content…
Conceits are one of the hardest kinds of metaphor to execute, since it requires careful comparison of two veritably different ideas--a palindrome and a facebook profile. Not to mention he compares these ideas all while using language that creates a smooth, video-like image in readers’ heads. Why would somebody create such an elaborate poetry form for another that they haven’t seen in years, and who the poet was in a relationship with so long ago that could potentially be deemed insignificant? It becomes apparent that the relationship they had began before she was “unpregnant in 8th grade,” revealing that they were “boyfriend and girlfriend” sometime early in middle school. Letters that “her best friend trades between [them]” gives away their maturity as well. Middle school relationships are never usually relationships that last long or even matter to those who were in them later on in life. Middle school times are often times most of us want to forget due to all of the weird events that take place during them. Then why does Marshall draw up such a complex conceit for somebody who would seem to not matter? The impact this woman had on him and the sympathy he feels for her because of what she went through attributes …show more content…
Nate Marshall creates a palindrome in layers by first listing events of her life and page backwards from top to bottom. He begins by describing that she has two kids, the most recent event to happen to her according to her “profile” as he says. Any person is able to make this observation just by looking at a profile picture of photo albums displayed at the top of a profile. Readers start to infer that we are going backward in time as the poem reads “...i see she has two kids, now 1 she had in high school, now none at all. she unaborts 1.” A person cannot “ungive birth” so it is obvious he is scrolling past posts updating her friends of the new life she has brought into the world or perhaps pregnancy announcements. He begins talking about her changes in her appearance as she “uncuts her hair”. After this point, it seems as if the images start to exceed the constraints of her profile since he begins picturing situations in which her hair “pulls into her scalp from clumps on the floor” and “her new boyfriend forgets the weight of her” before she “leaves her new boyfriend”. Not only does the ordering of his events contribute to the success of the conceit, but his word choice and tense as well create the second layer. In the poem by using the prefix “un-” with words

The Big Bad Wold Is Heartless

...formed: by starting out with an idea, thesis, antithesis and finally sublation. The resolution is an epiphany of sorts that, like a quest, comes only at the end, after having undergone various trials. I would like to think that this piece of writing exhibits the point I wish to instill: the necessity of imaginative freedom in myth. Let Absurdity Reign Erich Fromm interprets the story of Little Red Riding Hood as the “expression of a deep antagonism against men and sex” (TFL 241). Men (who are represented by the wolf) are seen as “ruthless and cunning animals, who turn the sexual act into a cannibalistic ritual” (CFT 7). A man is a heartless animal driven by the two most primary animal faculties: lust and hunger. Susan Brownmiller contrasts this position with her interpretation of the same tale as a “cultural story that holds the gender bottom line by perpetuating the notion that women are at once victims of male violence even as they must position themselves as beneficiaries of male protection”(CFT 8). Thus, according to Fromm, it is the wolf himself that symbolizes men, whilst for Brownmiller the story itself perpetuates a message of gender prejudice and stereotyping. On top of these two interpretations one could heap psychoanalytic interpretations of womb envy by the wolf (Anne Sexton), the succumbing of a young innocent youth through lies and trickery, thereby straying from the idealized Christian path, the loss of virginity and innocence as symbolized by that pivotal symbolic...

DRAFT ii DRAFT About this book Computational complexity theory has developed rapidly in the past three decades. The list of surprising and fundamental results proved since 1990 alone could fill a book: these include new probabilistic definitions of classical complexity classes (IP = PSPACE and the PCP Theorems) and their implications for the field of approximation algorithms; Shor’s algorithm to factor integers using a quantum computer; an understanding of why current approaches to the famous P versus NP will not be successful; a theory of derandomization and pseudorandomness based upon computational hardness; and beautiful constructions of pseudorandom objects such as extractors and expanders. This book aims to describe such recent achievements of complexity theory in the context of the classical results. It is intended to both serve as a textbook as a reference for self-study. This means...
