Assignment 1: Exploration of a Professional Journal Article in Psychology
In a study done by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and the University of Portsmouth, UK, researchers conducted a live study in which 60 people were asked their travel destinations (Vrij, A., Granhag, P., Mann, S., & Leal, S., 2011). The purpose of the test is whether to see if the people interviewed, both asked to tell the truth and lie about their travel plans, was to see how well the researchers could effectively distinguish if the person was or was not telling the truth. Normally, to distinguish if people are telling the truth or not, a Polygraph machine is used but the machine requires a lot of set up and controlled conditions. However, for this new sort of research, the researchers would be on the lookout for the following dependent variables: length of the response, amount of detail, plausibility, contradictions, and spontaneous corrections.
The initial testing was done at the departure gates of the airport in which people were asked where they were heading to and what their plans were. Then the people tested were asked to conduct further research by bringing in a second researcher answer some more questions about their trip. The second researcher however did not know any individuals plans before being brought in. Half the people were asked to tell the truth, 29 people, to the second person while the second half, 31 people, were asked to lie. Along with the variable to be tested, three different hypotheses would be tested for the latter half of the questioning: truth tellers’ stories sounded more plausible than liars’ stories, truth tellers made fewer contradictions and more, spontaneous corrections than liars (Vrij, A., Granhag, P., Mann, S., & Leal, S., 2011).

The Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Hebrews, Egyptians, Phoenicians, early Christians, Mayans, and Incas all used some form of numerology to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the universe. Numerology is perhaps the easiest of the occult arts to understand and use. All you need is the birth date and the complete name of an individual to unlock all of the secrets that the numbers hold. (Most authorities agree that the full birth name as recorded on your birth certificate is the name that must be used for all calculations involving name.) There are eleven numbers used in constructing Numerology charts. These numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 22. Larger numbers that occur from adding the numbers in the complete birth date or from the values assigned to each name are reduced by adding the digits together until the sum achieved is one of the core numbers. Merely add the components of the larger number together (repeatedly, if necessary) until a single digit (or the "master" numbers 11 or 22) results. Each of these numbers represents different characteristics and expressions. Master numbers are the only exception to rule of reducing to the single digit.
