22 October 2012 What is the first picture that comes to mind when you hear the words “good leader?” Maybe you picture past figures in your life that have made you who you are now. Maybe you picture Nick Sabine Leading his Crimson Tide to all their recent victories. Or you might even possibly see Adolf Hitler, although what he stood for will always be atrocious, he did do an incredible job of getting others to follow him. So the question is: What makes a good leader? Susie Shellenberger, the 2010 recipient of the Reed Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award, would say, “A good leader is one who doesn’t compromise integrity or character when no one is looking. A good leader maintains the same high standards in private as seen in public.” Let’s break down what she meant when she said this. First, a good leader doesn’t compromise character or integrity no matter what. Webster gives such definitions for character as “moral excellence and firmness,” and integrity as “the quality or state of being complete or undivided.” When you put these two together, the sum is a person who is secure in his convictions and who lives under those convictions no matter what the circumstances are. A good leader does not live a two-faced lie. As its definition states, to be a person of integrity means that you are complete or undivided. You are unwavering. You do not act differently around different people groups, but remain the same no matter what others might think of you. So many non-Christians today complain that people in the church are hypocritical, and then they allow that to be their excuse for not looking into Christianity. If we as believers would step up and choose to be a people who live out what we preach, live to be complete and undivided, and choose not to compromise, it would turn a lot of heads. Non-Christians would do a...

PART I: WHAT LEADERSHIP MEANS TO ME NOW, AT THE END OF THE TERM This course didn’t changed my ideas too much about the leadership, but I learned many things that I did not know about leadership from this class. On my first paper, I said “a leader should be able to speak well, because the way you speak effects the people more than everybody thinks” and “A leader should look forward and needs to plan every situation that can affect his job.” There is nothing changed about this two quotes from my first paper. I am still thinking that if you are a good speaker you can affect people around you and the words that you are using will be the meaning of your dream. So, if you can show your dream clearly to your people they will be able to follow your vision easily. Speaking is an important thing about leadership, but also this course......

The New Psychology of Leadership & Analysis

...The New Psychology of Leadership: A Student Analysis, Implications and Relevance Arlene G. Piper University of Fredericton EMBA 7005 – Leadership Theory & Practice Professor: Mona Egvig January 25, 2015 Abstract Studies on leadership have been examined as early as circa 500 BC, where Sun Tzu described the five traits of a successful leader (Gagliardi, 1999). It is believed that his thoughts on leadership closely approximate the Situational Leadership theory of modern times. In 16th century AD, Niccolo Machiavelli put forth theories on how a prince should acquire and maintain his state. There have been numerous other strategists of their time, each offering and teaching various leadership principles; some of which are still relevant today. As action shifts from the battlefield to the boardroom, new leadership theories continue to emerge, existing ones are consistently being revised, reviewed and reframed, and new leadership gurus are emerging as household names. This paper will summarize the salient points identified in the article titled The New Psychology of Leadership, by Stephen D. Reicher, Michael J. Platow and S. Alexander Haslam published in the August 2007 issue of Scientific American Mind. The author will outline the relevance of this ‘new’ theory in the context of a current leadership role as well as the potential application of this leadership theory and the applicability within the expansion of a leadership role. The paper will conclude with key takeaways......
