Religion and Diversity Religion and diversity is impacted all over the world, and many people believe that the United States of America is said to have to the most diverse religion population in the world, well they’re wrong. People assume that because of the immigration of America that, America should be overwhelmingly diverse in religion. Well this might have been true back in 1940, today America contains (78.4%) of Christians, only (.6%) of Muslims, (1.7%) Jews, (.7%) Buddhist, (.4%) Hindu and (16.1%) unaffiliated, according to pew research in 2013. This is very low compared to other counties around the world. More than one-quarter of American adults (28%) have left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion - or no religion at all. If change in affiliation from one type of Protestantism to another is included, (44%) of adults have either switched religious affiliation, moved from being unaffiliated with any religion to being affiliated with a particular faith, or left any connection to a certain religious tradition altogether. The survey finds that the number of people who say they are unaffiliated with any particular faith today (16.1%) is more than double the number who say they were not affiliated with any particular religion as children. Among Americans ages 18-29, one out of four say they’re not currently affiliated with any certain religion.
The research survey done by pew research confirms that the United States is on the verge of becoming a minority Protestant country; the number of Americans who report that they’re members of Protestant denominations now stands at barely (51%). Moreover, the Protestant population is characterized by significant internal diversity and fragmentation, encompassing hundreds of different denominations loosely grouped around three fairly distinct religious traditions - evangelical Protestant churches, (26.3%) of the overall adult population, mainline Protestant churches (18.1%) and historically black Protestant churches (6.9%). While those Americans who are unaffiliated with any particular religion have seen the greatest growth in numbers as a result of changes in affiliation, Catholicism has experienced the greatest net losses as a result of affiliation changes. While nearly one-in-three Americans (31%) were raised in the Catholic faith, today fewer than one-in-four (24%) describe themselves as Catholic. These losses would have been even more pronounced were it not for the offsetting impact of immigration.
The research Survey by pew research finds that among the foreign-born adult population, Catholics outnumber Protestants by nearly a two-to-one margin (46% Catholic vs. 24% Protestant); among native-born Americans, on the other hand, the statistics show that Protestants outnumber Catholics by an even larger margin, 55% Protestant vs. 21% Catholic. Immigrants are also disproportionately represented among several world religions in the U.S., including Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Although there are about half as many Catholics in the U.S. as Protestants, the number of Catholics nearly rivals the number of members of evangelical Protestant churches and far exceeds the number of members of both mainline Protestant churches and historically black Protestant churches.

Fluent Programming vs Law of Demeter

...Fluent or Law of Demeter? Serban Gavrus Abstract The Law of Demeter is one of the most widely known programming principle, it‟s easy to respect and it assures some important code quality aspect. It can be briefly defined as “use only one dot”. Fluency is a popular choice for implementing interfaces because it adds readability and ease of use. Method chaining and fluency are in practice inseparable. These two aspects of programming seem to be contradictory, one can‟t have both. This essay argues that fluency and LoD can coexist and in the case where the developer must sacrifice one for the other, there is no clear rule to follow. 1.1 Law of Demeter The Law of Demeter was proposed by Ian Holland in 1987. It‟s a programming rule that applies to how methods are written, whose purpose is to assure a good programming style. It‟s been created as a metric to asses the quality of an object-orientated program. The direct purpose of the law is to condense several OOP principles(coupling control, information hiding, information restriction, information localization, structural induction) into a simple and easy to follow rule. The indirect purpose is to ensure loose coupling and stricter modularity. [1] The Law of Demeter is intended to be a guideline, not an absolute restriction. Misunderstanding and blindly following this law can lead to poorer code. [1] The law states that an object “A” should not access an object “B”, retrieved by calling a method of another object “C”, of...

Growing Up

...By Jennifer J., Old Orchard Beach, ME My friend Milton sat in the back of our fifth grade class with a pack of Marlboros bulging out the chest pocket of his T-shirt. Carol had an abortion over the summer and is beginning her freshman year all smiles. Rob learned to hide vodka in his thermos at nine and Tammy's parents kicked her out last night after 13 years of hell. As for me, I only had to watch two people I care about destroy 12 years of Brady Bunch love and family values with one signature and a lawyer's bill for $5,000. My parents got divorced when I was 12 and I thought my life had come to an end. My mom left my younger brother and sister and me with my father in a huge house and took her Home Interior with her. A selfish 12-year-old, I wondered how Christmas would be with only one income and who would bake cookies before I came home from school. But it was not long before I realized that my mom took more than her silk flowers and ceramic owls. She took our favorite tutor, our maid to clean up after us and our mother to give us our daily support and comforting. Suddenly, all of these roles were to be replaced by me. Of course I wanted to help my father ease into his new role as Mr. Mom, but I never wanted to become a very young mother of two. The greatest challenge that faces me as a teenager, and continues to face children, is learning when to act like a child and when it's necessary to become an adult. When a 14 year-old child becomes pregnant, does it mean that...

Technologically Lonely

...Technologically Lonely Hey, Hey! The old lady kept on yelling at the paper boy, yet he never noticed her. He had just hit her right in the face with the Sunday edition, but he could not realize anything that had happened. Because the paperboy was listening to his iPod, he was in his own world, caring about no one. It is clear that as newer technologies are widely available, teenagers are among the first ones to embrace its use. Unfortunately, in recent years, mp3 players, cell phones, and portable video games tend to negatively define how teenagers develop socially. The use of newer technologies without proper guidelines prevent teenagers from building healthy family relations, promotes teenage addictive behaviors and enforces loneliness although some may believe these devices and technologies connect teens further. Some might argue that electronics allow teenagers to keep in touch with their close ones. Many teenagers feel a lot more comfortable communicating with their friends through text, e-mail, or online websites as opposed to personally. People that support social networking say that the use of technology is a good way for shy people to talk to their friends, and express themselves over texting. Although it keeps teenagers connected, it doesn’t allow them to learn proper socializing skills to use with friends, family, or in their future professional life. First, portable electronic devices disable teenagers from building healthy family relations...

Like Rod Canion of Compaq and Steve Jobs of Apple, Dell turned a fledging start-up into a multibillion-dollar computer empire. But unlike the ill-fated Canion and Jobs, who lost control of their creations as they grew, Dell has managed to hold on to the reins of his maverick venture and achieve the unique distinction of being the computer industry's longest-tenured CEO. Dell's parents wanted him to be a doctor. But by the time he was in junior high, Dell was hooked on computers. While most of his classmates were tinkering under the hoods of old cars, Dell loved to tinker with his Apple IIe. To please his parents, Dell enrolled as a premed student at the University of Texas in 1983, but by then his only real interest was in computers. During his first semester, Dell spent his spare time buying up remaindered, outmoded PCs from local retailers, then upgrading and selling them from his dorm room. He was so successful...
