Parallel Journeys

Parallel Journeys, by Eleanor Ayer with Helen Waterford and Alfons Heck, compares the life of two young people in Germany during the rise of Hitler and the outbreak of World War II. They were born within sixty miles of each other, but their lives took dramatically different paths.
Alfons, is a boy who grew up on a farm in Germany. When Hitler came to power he became involved with the Hitler Youth. Alfons grew up on a farm but was a Nazi boy who became a commander at age sixteen.
This book truly depicts Hitler's impact and influence on the youth of Germany. Alfons was brainwashed by Hitler's promises, a full pledged Nazi youth is how it is presented in the book he participated in all rallies. He started his training to become the future of Germany and eventually of the world. There he learned discipline and order. He trained to become a soldier and he learned the ways of warfare. He was taught to be a follower of anti-Semitism and was told to hate the Jewish people. He along with millions of Nazi’s believed that they were the reason for Germany's problems. As years went by, Alfons rose through the ranks of the military until the end of the war where realized what atrocities had been committed, he than took off his uniform and went on to help people.

On the other side of the spectrum we have Helen Waterford a young Jewish girl who grew up in Frankfurt, Germany. She married Siegfried Wohlfarth and moved to Amsterdam because of tension brewing in Frankfurt. She had a baby girl Doris, whom she gave to friends to protect and guard her so she could going into hiding as a result of the Nazi invasion. She and her husband were found by the Nazis and taken to Birkenau. Birkenau was one of the forty camps at Auschwitz. While at Auschwitz she experienced the horror of the death camps. Eventually she and three hundred other women were

...his daughters, Goneril and Regan feed him lies, and basically tell him that they love him more than life itself. King Lear’s third daughter, Cordelia answers truthfully; she tells him that she loves him for giving her life, and as much as a daughter should love her father. Because of the King’s blindness, he is outraged by this response. He fails to see that Goneril and Regan were lying to get ahead while poor Cordelia, who he then banishes, is the one who truly loves him. The king then divides his land between Goneril and Regan, and they proceed to lead him into madness. Because they don’t truly love him, he ends up storming out and finding himself right in the middle of a literal storm. There’s also a storm occurring within him that parallels the storm outside; the king is mad, and he’s starting to realize it. He strips down, yells, and carries on at and in the storm,...

Commentary On Parallel Journeys By Eleanor Ayers

...This summer I read a tale of two people whose lives couldn't be more different, but both had fallen victim to the great evil known as Adolf Hitler. I read Parallel Journeys by Eleanor Ayers as my summer reading project. Reading this book has given me a new perspective on the Holocaust. It made me realize how easy Hitler's rise to power was, but how difficult it was to diminish his authority. It's easy to instill beliefs of prejudice, discrimination, and hatred in the minds of the youth, but nearly impossible to remove it. While most people would cowered in fear at the sight of everything after just being rescued from concentration/work camp, Helen Waterford showed courage and was more determined than ever to find her daughter Doris. Upon leaving Kratzau, Helen was arrested for being a German. After she was released, Helen learned there was a truck that was headed to Holland. When she didn't have the right papers, the driver tried to have her removed. In Parallel Journeys, it states, "I chose that moment to shout loudly that I had not been spared at Auschwitz to fight for my human rights in vain." This was an incredibly brave act. Helen showed courage by speaking up for herself....

Winnebago Trickster Tales

...people how insignificant humans really are. Whether it is an outbreak of tornados, or just a really bad case of poison ivy, nature finds a way to remind. Trickster shows that side people think that they are indestructible. Nature also has a way of warning people of what is to come. An example of this today would be kids playing outside while there is thunder. In the beginning of this travel Trickster gets his warning. While on his second journey in the story, he comes upon a voice. The voice said, “He who chews me will defecate; he will defecate!”(108). Trickster then comes to find out that it is a bulb on a bush that is saying this. This is an example of nature warning him, ahead of time, about the consequences of eating the bulb. Trickster, being the arrogant man he is, doesn’t heed the warning by the bush and eats the bulb. This shows just how much this story can still be related to children today. Most children when told not to do something, they will still do it, no matter the consequences. After eating the bulb, Trickster continues on his journey. He keeps commenting on how...

Untitled.

...In some parts of life I have seen through the eyes of my heart, and breathe from the cleaves of my eyes. For so many reasons I have found darkness through the brightest lights in the sunny days and found the deepest bliss through the darkest nights in suffocation. The thought right now is to be thankful, through life-love-lovelife lessons I could never get from any other moments in life. It is as if I am looking down while flying on a blimp; when you could fall and drop your courage in an instant. Such visions, might be overcoming in nights past twelve in every state of my thinking line. When two weeks ago I was spending a lonely time through the city, I was partly enjoying what people might be looking for in days and nights through their loneliness. Carving through woods and trees… and I might be overlooking through carving through people and splash of pudddles and running in the rain and fighting over small things on the street, or even carving through the darkness in the city of lights that are followed by thousands of human’s breaths that smell thoroughly no longer breathable through these contaminated lungs and polluted minds. Then I ran away piercing through the crowds that stare with laughter of suffocation and pain, through those rainy days and lonely nights and peaceful hearts. Then I sip through one beautiful smell of sight in front of me; a cup of Mandailing coffee. As a witness it tries to test the endurance of my loneliness in the city of ignorance. I have found such...

Poetry Essay: "Storm Warnings" & "Diving Into the Wreck"

...Poetry Essay: "Storm Warnings" & "Diving into the Wreck" In "Storm Warnings," and "Diving into the Wreck," by Adrienne Rich, both have the same idea of creating a place of sanction and comfort. The main lesson to learn from both of these poems is that one must create a place of sanctuary, where one can go back and look back on the past, and finally they learn to move on rather than to try fighting it. Specifically in "Storm Warnings," the narrator is comparing her emotions to the storm brewing outside. To illustrate, "weather abroad and weather in the heart alike come on regardless of prediction," literally means the weather is unpredictable. Also, it means that a person's emotional long haul is hanging by a thread and is erratic. Furthermore, the poem goes on saying that no matter what, you cannot change the weather, "Which clocks and weatherglasses cannot alter." Which just goes on to say that the person will have to come into reference with their emotions, and settle all the little issues. For example, the weather, pain, and sadness you feel inside you can be pretty unpredictable and can surprise you when you aren't careful. Adrienne Rich uses a wide variety of figurative language to create a sense of foreboding and helplessness in her poem "Storm Warnings." The opening of her poem uses imagery to convey the threat of the incoming storm: "winds are walking overhead" and there is a "zone / Of gray unrest" that she notices out of her window. The darkness of...

System Installation

...What are the different approaches to system installation? Which is the most costly and least expensive? What re the risk with each method? When all tests have been successfully completed the system can be installed in to a working environment. A company can choose from four different methods of implementation; Direct, Parallel Installation, Pilot and Phased. The parallel installation is the most secure method of the four. However, it is the most costly because you are running two systems and there is the possibility the company may want to rely on the old system. In this instance the old and new system is still fully operational. Users are able to use the old system as well as the new system. This is safe because if there are any problems with the new system, the old system is still accessible. The old system will stay in use until the new system has all the data input and functioning without any problems. Later the old system will be expired. The direct installation is and over night or two day conversation from one system to another. The other system is in use on until the new is installed. Then the old system is immediately terminated. This method has to be carefully planned as there is no back up. This plan is risky and the less expensive. The pilot installation allows live testing of the new system in a group environment. This system is installed in a small area and users are able to test it in a live working environment while providing feedback. ...

Parallelism

...Parallel Structures Exercise 1 2. “genius” and “lunatic” 4. “work fast”, “ask few questions”, and “keep a low profile” Exercise 2 2. As part of his accounting business, Rick has private clients, corporations, and does some pro bono work. 4. A new job is likely to cause a person anxiety, but working extra hours is likely to make a good impression. Exercise 3 2. “Caught in” and “tied in”. King used two parallel verb phrases followed by an abstract idea. The parallelism creates a wise tone in the sentence which keeps them awake, alert, and listening. 4. “Collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self-purification; and direct action”. King uses parallel phrases that all relate back to a nonviolent campaign. His use of parallelism appeals to logos, as he provides the audience with a list of action. 6. “extremist for love”, “extremist for justice”, and “extremist for the Christian gospel: "I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus?" Was not Martin Luther an extremist”. King paralleled the phrase “extremist for…” followed by a cause and preceded by a famous example. He then used a quote to prove the point he was making. The parallel structures provides a lot of emphasis, which supports the point King was trying to make. The parallelism attributes to a great deal of logos as well. Doppelganger

...Doppelganger. Parker s 2006 Dystopian novel illustrates the ideas of thirst for power and darkness within humanity as the protagonist Andrew is placed in a dystopian parallel of his own world. These ideas reflect the major concerns of late 20th century Australian society. Parker examines deeper issues and illuminates universal aspects of the human condition. Parker exposes the potential for the darker side of humanity in Doppelganger, reflecting issues of his context. Cleary derived from themes in modern literature, such as Golding's "Lord of Flies" which examines the conflict between two competing impulses in all human beings, the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully and follow moral commands opposed to acting selfishly to gratify ones immediate desires. The darker side of humanity is introduced through Andrew’s character, an ordinary Australian teenager governed by his philosophy "don’t disturb the world and it won’t disturb you”. Andrew finds himself incapable of standing up for what he knows is right and this is exemplified early in the novel when Josh in an act of unprovoked evil, tears apart miss swains photograph. Andrew, convinced he is “hardwired” to be compliant with josh, aids his vindictive nature as it is easier than standing up for what he knows to be right. Andrew discovers his own darkness in the parallel Sydney, under the influence of mind altering drugs when he murders another boy in a response to his primitive urges. Incited by the chanting “Kill boy, kill boy”...

The Awakening

...to identify more with her inner self rather than conforming to her outer self increases; Edna begins to devote more time towards her paintings and furthermore, moves out from her residency with her husband. However, in the process of accepting her inner self, Edna is no longer able to fit in as a functioning member of society. She as a result becomes frustrated and depressed. Furthermore, not even those who are closest to her (for example, Robert) are able to understand her needs and desires. As a result comes the ending: Edna’s ultimate death in a search for independence (her swim out to the sea). Such ending comes as a shock with no real solution for Edna other than death. However, such ending is conclusive because of its realistic parallels to society that Chopin is trying to highlight. Chopin’s ending of the book serves as a commentary of society’s expectations of women. Chopin’s main message, as highlighted through the ending, is the expectations society places onto women is an ultimatum forcing women to either conform to its norms or to reject its norms, but face rejection as well. Because of the present society, women are unable to balance both lending to women’s continued subordination and lack of expression. The setting of the ending of the novel takes place at the sea. Edna has gone out for a swim to the sea and has swum so far that she loses her strength to return. The sea, throughout the novel, is representative of...
