Effective communication is a vital component in the management of a patient because it allows the paramedics to build rapport with the patients (Ross, 2013). It also allows the paramedics to be able to complete a thorough physical assessment of the patient, ensuring that all information required by the patient is given to the paramedics (Ross, 2013).

Communication between a patient and a paramedic can be difficult in a pre-hospital setting (Eadie, Carlyon, Stephens, & Wilson, 2013), so therefore when building rapport with patients it is important to implement the components of communication. The components of communication consist of three aspects, verbal by using a calm tone of voice, body language by holding the patients hand if needed and written (Mayor, 2017). Paramedics could also consider using models of communication such as the patient centred model. The patient centred model of communication seeks to holistically assess the patient and allows the patient to have an input into the decision making of their care (Mayor, 2017). Once paramedics have built rapport with the patient it is vital that they then commence a physical assessment. …show more content…
The physical assessment allows the paramedic to determine the patient’s history, past history, medications, symptoms, and their level of pain and potential treatments options all throughout communication with that specific patient (Eadie, Carlyon, Stephens, & Wilson, 2013).

Overall effective communication is important in paramedicine because it allows the paramedics to build rapport with the patients via the use of the components of communication or the patient centred communication model (Mayor, 2017).
