Parrot Heads Unite!

Jimmy Buffett fans around the world refer to themselves as “Parrot Heads”. These fans are considered and/or represent one of the most dedicated fan bases anywhere. These Parrot Heads were coined this nickname by a member of the rock group Eagles. This nickname came about in 1985 and has been referenced with this group of fans ever since. Jimmy Buffett himself sings of his fan base that he and Parrot Heads are “the people our parents warned us about”, and they are a self-proclaimed nerd group. But at the same time, these die-hard Buffett fans often fantasize of being in a make believe, almost mythical land where reality kind of fades away and they can be themselves. All of this has lead to the Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc., a small club that started in 1989 and has grown to clubs all over the world numbering the thousands. It has literally become the name brand for the Jimmy Buffett fans and Jimmy Buffett himself. This “brand” has Buffett selling his fans the chance to temporarily escape into the land of fun and make believe. That being said, with Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. people/fans are purchasing the opportunity to live a type of life with others just like themselves. They have opportunities for road trips to concerts, visit with other club members from around the country and the world at a happy hour, or even volunteer to help with a non-profit organization. The clubs have been able to build many customer communities all over the world. Because of its large membership worldwide, a “Parrot Head” convention is held every year in which Jimmy Buffett himself sends a videotaped message to his fans. This allows Buffett a chance to give back to his fans. All of this loyalty has allowed Jimmy Buffett to create and embrace a lifestyle that his fans absolutely love. His tours, restaurant sales, and albums earn him approximately $100 million every year. In this manner, Jimmy Buffett as created his own brand of lifestyle, not only for himself, but for his loyal fans as well. Jimmy Buffett’s brand, through his music and lifestyle, kind of took on a life of its own. In looking and learning about Jimmy Buffett, I think there are five marketing lessons that we can learn from this musician. The first lesson would be to focus his strategy on a niche that plays to his strengths. Although Jimmy Buffett was not an overnight success, he developed an easy going beach bum persona for which he has become known and loved for. This quickly became his niche, “tropical rock”. The second lesson is to build a brand that will leave a visual image in the minds of the fan base. When you think of Jimmy Buffett, one pictures in their mind a group of laid back people being themselves, singing, and wearing silly looking clothes on a tropical retreat. A third lesson is to engage and listen to your fans to help create loyal followers. Jimmy Buffett created a brand by interacting with his fans, both before and during his concerts and giving them the experience that they were looking for. In return, fans organized themselves into clubs and imitated him, popularly known as “Parrot Heads”. A fourth lesson would be to establish partnerships that will help promote your brand. It is beneficial to partner with leaders and/or sponsors who will help your brand in the image that you build. For example, Jimmy Buffett partnered with sponsors such as Anheuser-Busch brewing company to promote his of “Margaritaville” music and lifestyle. And the fifth lesson would be to always give back to the community/fans that will complement your brand. Once you have established your name and brand, it is always a good idea/marketing tool to give back to the community that will complement your brand. Jimmy Buffett’s success and business strategy comes in large part from him focusing on a niche, listening to his customers and fans, and even giving back to his loyal customers/fans.

Ripia Merengue Research Paper

...and middle- and upper-class Dominicans, mainly because the lyrics often about hard drinking, women troubles, illicit sex, and male bravado were considered vulgar and worthless. The first Dominican bachatas were recorded immediately after the death of Trujillo, whose 30-year dictatorship was accompanied by censorship. Merengue was first mentioned around the middle of the 19th century and has locally been very popular since then. The genre was later promoted even more by Rafael Trujillo, the dictator from 1930 to 1961, who turned it into the country's national music and dance style. Up until the 1930s, the music was considered to be "immoral" by the general population. Its more descriptive and colorful name, perico ripiao (literally "ripped parrot" in Spanish) was said to have been the name of a brothel in Santiago where the music was played. Moralists in the country tried to ban the music and the provocative dance that accompanied it, but with little success. Merengue experienced a sudden elevation of status during dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo's reign from 1930 to 1961. Although he was from the south rather than the Cibao, he did come from a rural area and from a lower-class family, so he decided that the rural style of perico ripiao should be the Dominican national symbol. He ordered numerous merengues to be composed in his honor. With titles like "Literacy", "Trujillo is great and immortal", and "Trujillo the great architect", these songs describe his virtues and extol his...

REVOLUTIONARY PROCLAMATIONS OF 1861 AND 1862 Although Russia's Emancipation of 1861 went further than that of the same period in the United States, some of the radicals were disappointed. They voiced their anger in revolutionary proclamations like the two excerpted here. The novelist M. I. Mikhailov, who helped write the first, was arrested in September 1861 for distributing subversive literature and was sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. The second proclamation, widely distributed in Saint Petersburg in May 1862, caused a great stir and is considered to be historically significant in the development of the Russian revolutionary movement. P. G. Zaichnevskii, who wrote it with a group of fellow prisoners and sent it to the underground printer via a sentry, said later that as of 1862 neither he nor his coauthors had yet read the Communist Manifesto. ...most precarious. How could they be successful in the battle of life without a leader to guide the weakwinged party through the perils of earthly existence? Many an eloquent speaker addressed the assembly, deploring their helpless plight in plaintive terms, bringing tears to the eyes of thetiny ones, and it was unanimously agreed that it was highly desirable, nay, absolutely necessary, that they should place themselves without delay under the protection of a king. At this stage, full of fervour, leapt forward the Hoopoe (Hud-hud) renowned in the Muslim scriptures for the part she had played as King Solomon’s trusted emissary to Bilqis, the Queen of Sheba. She had on her bosom the crest symbolizing her spiritual knowledge and on her head shone the crown of faith. “Dear birds”, she said, “I have the honour to belong to the Celestial Army. I know the Lord and the secrets of creation. When one carries, as I do, the name of God writ large upon its beak, one may be given the credit of knowing many a...

Garuda Purana

...The Garuda Purana This is a translation of an abridged version of the Garuda Purana. The Garuda Purana is one of the Vishnu Puranas. It is in the form of a dialog between Vishnu and Garuda, the King of Birds. The second section of this Purana (given here) deals with issues connected with death, particularly funeral rites and the metaphysics of reincarnation. Portions of the Garuda Purana are used by some Hindus as funeral liturgy. Indeed, some consider it unlucky to read this text except during funerals. Of interest are the intermediate states between birth and rebirth, which roughly correspond to the western concepts of Hell and Heaven. Since this was written during the medieval era, it is possible that the writer of this text had contact with Christianity. Earlier Hindu texts do not elaborate about 'hell' and 'heaven,' at least not to this extent, and the subject is completely absent in the oldest texts. Here, the torments of Hell are described in terms that would not be out of place in a Baptist revival tent (or Dante, for that matter). In addition, the four-square city of Yama, the God of Death, is reminiscent of the heavenly city in Revelation. However, these are way stations between incarnations (or, as termed in the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Bardos), not a permanent destination. The Garuda Purana starts with the details of the afterlife. Following this is an account of funeral procedures, including rituals, the astrological timing of the post-death observances, and ritual...
