Letter from a Pilot

...Letter from an airline pilot: He writes: My lead flight attendant came to me and said, "We have an H.R. On this flight." (H.R. Stands for human remains.) "Are they military?" I asked. 'Yes', she said. ... 'Is there an escort?' I asked. 'Yes, I've already assigned him a seat'. 'Would you please tell him to come to the flight deck. You can board him early," I said.. A short while later, a young army sergeant entered the flight deck. He was the image of the perfectly dressed soldier. He introduced himself and I asked him about his soldier. The escorts of these fallen soldiers talk about them as if they are still alive and still with us. 'My soldier is on his way back to Virginia ,' he said. He proceeded to answer my questions, but offered no words. I asked him if there was anything I could do for him and he said no. I told him that he had the toughest job in the military and that I appreciated the work that he does for the families of our fallen soldiers. The first officer and I got up out of our seats to shake his hand. He left the flight deck to find his seat. We completed our pre-flight checks, pushed back and performed an uneventful departure. About 30 minutes into our flight I received a call from the lead flight attendant in the cabin. 'I just found out the family of the soldier we are carrying, is on board', she said. She then proceeded to tell me that the father, mother, wife and 2-year old daughter were escorting their son, husband, and father...

...My Friend Luke Fernando Sorrentino Translated by Gustavo Artiles and Alex Patterson I have a friend who must be the sweetest, shyest person in the world. His name is brittle and ancient (Luke), his age modestly intermediate (forty). He is rather short and skinny, has a thin moustache and even thinner hair on his head. Since his vision is not perfect, he wears glasses: they are small, round and frame-less.      In order not to inconvenience anyone, he always walks sideways. Instead of saying 'Excuse me', he prefers to glide by one side. If the gap is so narrow that it will not allow him to pass, Luke waits patiently until the obstruction -- be it animate or inanimate, rational or irrational -- moves by itself. Stray dogs and cats panic him, and in order to avoid them he constantly crosses from one side to of the road to another.      He speaks with a very thin, subtle voice, so inaudible that it is hard to tell if he is speaking at all. He has never interrupted anybody. On the other hand, he can never manage more than two words without somebody interrupting him. This does not seem to irritate him; in fact, he actually appears happy to have been able to utter those two words.      My friend Luke has been married for years. His wife is a thin, choleric, nervous woman who, as well as having an unbearably shrill voice, strong lungs, a finely drawn nose and a viperous tongue suffers from an uncontrollable temper and the personality of a lion tamer. Luke -- you have...

...load occurs during every flight and the fuselage is not only subject to pressurization forces. The static strength of the fuselage therefore incorporates a larger safety factor. A reduced factor of safety from the stated factor will preclude failure due to creep and provide adequate protection against tear propagation. Besides, the structure must be able to support limit loads without permanent deformation. At any load up to limit loads, the deformation may not interfere with safe operation and this applies in particular to the control system. The structure must be able to support ultimate loads without failure for at least three seconds. Another important construction factor of fuselage is protection of passenger in crash. Frequent Flyer

...Method in its financial statements. Excess capacity of around 64-67% throughout the years 1986-1990. The load factor is equal to the breakeven load factor. This results in only an incremental cost incurred of serving a passenger and not the loss of revenue on assigning a seat to a free flier when that seat can be filled by a passenger who travels without redeeming any points. Q: What are the various methods United might use to measure the costs of its frequent flier program? What are the potential differences in dollars of the cost measured by each method? Deferred Revenue Consider 6% as the percentage of total revenue passenger From Exhibit 2, Average Yield per Revenue passenger mile = 12.60 cents Total Revenue passenger mile = 76137 millions Deferred revenue as a result of Frequent fliers = (Total Revenue passenger miles)*(Average Yield per Revenue Passenger mile)*(0.06) Deferred revenue as a result of Frequent fliers 575595720 = $ 575,595,720 = $ 575.6 million Incremental Method According to Exhibit 2, it is seen that the Cost per available seat mile is 9.60 cents. Total travel awards redeemed by members is 1.2 million free trips Therefore the total cost = (Total travel awards redeemed) * (Cost per available seat mile)*(Average Flight Length) = 1.2 million * 9.60 cents*912 = $ 105062400 = $ 105.06million What method should United Airlines use to measure the cost of its frequent flier program? Being Filipino

...day of my flight came closer, I could not help but feel nervous. I never met any of my relatives over there, nor did I know anything about the place. Then I calmly told myself, it was going to be alright, that it was going to be an adventure; a thirteen hour adventure. The time has finally come; thus it was time for me to fly Philippines. As I looked for my seat in the plane, I could not help but accidently bump into some people as they were putting their bags in the overhead compartments. I continued to walk down the aisle, frequently looking at my boarding pass, and continually searching for where my seat could be. After a couple of minutes of searching, I finally found my seat. I was happy to know that I had an aisle seat. This was convenient for me because of bathroom purposes. As I sat down, I noticed that there was a small screen in front of me. It was playing a vaguely video on safety and procedures in case of emergency. After what seemed like an hour, I heard a fairly loud ping sound that seemed to be coming from the overhead. It was the captain of the plane. She was introducing herself and giving the passengers details of the flight. Time of arrival, local time at destination, and what the weather was like, was just one of the few things she covered. With all the...

Helping these little toddlers mount inside a public utility vehicle, until they find a seat fit for everyone. The jeepney is the indisputable king of the road because of the sense of bayanihan inside. A Complete Turn Around, as we are hearing from most of the people, there are a lot of words opposing the use and presence of these jeepneys. There are a lot of complaints that says they are the primary cause of heavy traffic along major highways and avenues, and a major cause of air pollution because of the increasing number of smoke-belchers to name a few. However, they play a big role in the lives of every Filipino from its emergence up to the present times. But the Filipinos still find a sense of bayanihan, a formation of story and a dwelling of dreamers inside that makes us have a meaningful ride as well. It definitely contributes a lot to the society. What if there were no jeepneys at all? It is hard to imagine. It plays an important role not just for providing an accessible and a cheaper means of transportation to people. At Your Service. The assistance of the passengers or barkers has clearly manifested the aura...

Case – Basel Iii: an Evaluation of New Banking Regulations

...save a spouse. Holding constant the magnitude of a collision, a driver can maneuver the car to distribute the risk from a collision between the driver and a passenger. We quantify spousal altruism by the degree to which drivers riding with their spouse redistribute the risk from a fatal accident to themselves – as measured by ex post mortality – as compared to drivers not traveling with their spouse. We find that drivers with their spouses are at least 37% more likely to sacrifice themselves. This implies that they value the lives of their spouses at least 37% more than the lives of other individuals. A driver’s position in a car provides him with exclusive control over the pedals and steering wheel. At the time of an impending accident, this control enables him to adjust the total amount of risk facing the car’s occupants and how that risk is distributed. In other words, his maneuvers will have allocative and distributive effects on the occupants’ risk. The driver’s distributive choices reveal his relative preferences for himself over his passengers. The manifestation of injuries amongst the occupants allows observation of those relative preferences. A theory of spousal altruism – indeed any romantic notion of marriage – would predict that a husband is more willing to sacrifice himself for his passenger when the passenger is his wife.2 The central purpose of this paper is to test this prediction. We compare the probability that drivers travelling with spouses sacrifice their...
