Speech Title: This I Believe: Passion over Pay in the Career Field
Introduction:
Attention Getter: I believe in choosing a job based on my true passion. “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” The above quote is credited to Confucius, the well-known Chinese legend. I believe many of you would have come across the above quote at one time or the other. Many career coaches often cite this quote at will during career counseling to drive home the view that a person’s career decisions should be based on passion and not pay. Like what he said, I believed that if we were passionate enough about doing what we love, the money would come rolling in.
Thesis: Choosing a job based on your passion is important because true passion is more valuable than money and no obstacle will stop you from achieving success.
Preview/Transition: For example, I believe

Main Point/Example #1:
Which is better, love or money? Love is the key to happiness. People say having money is what life is about. I don’t believe that. The true happiness is going after what you love. When I was in high school, I always hoped I could get an honored job such as a talented doctor, a famous lawyer or a skillful engineer, so I could make a lot of money and got rich. However, I grew up and became more mature. Now I believe that true passion is more valuable than money. It doesn’t matter what kind of job I will have soon and how much my income is, as long as it should be something I enjoy, then it will lead me a happier and fulfilling life.
I believe you should strive to do what you love for a living. Most people hate waking up 8.00 o’clock in the morning each day for 40 years because they know they have to go to a job that they dislike even though they got paid with higher salary. Work takes up such a large portion of each day that it would only make sense to spend this time doing something that you have a passion for.
I believe that if you work hard enough in school or college, everyone can find a job that suits them. According to The Daily Illini newspaper, only about a third of all college freshmen choose a major that aligns with their interests. The others opt for the not-so-unusual money-making majors (Illini, 2013). Since I was young, I have loved business world and calculations very much and I want to have a job in the business industry, which is why I am majoring in finance now. However, in my country, finance is the most common career path to have and it is actually underpaid profession to choose. According to Jobstreet.com, doctors, engineers and pilot are among the top ten highest paying jobs in Malaysia. Even though there are many Finance graduates who is still looking for a job in my country, I still have a passion for what I am doing right now, because it is extremely important to do something that you love to do each and every day.
Transition: I believe true passion is more valuable than money.
Main Point/Example #2:
I believe when you choose passion over pay, there will be no obstacle that stops you from achieving success. When you really enjoy what you do, nothing will stop you from getting your work done. Your passion ignites your work, and like a rocket, it accelerates you past road blocks that may come about (Daily, 2013). Any obstacle that comes your way is accepted and fought off with a creative solution. For an example, before getting into Penn State for Finance major, I need to spend two horrible years for my International Baccalaureate Diploma Program which is the toughest foundation program in the world. It was a requirement from my government sponsorship to take IB course before I could pursue my major. There was lot of written papers, research and homework that I need to settle. From what I remember, I was nearly decided to give up on this program. However, because I am passionate about what I do, I feel unstoppable and nothing can obstruct me from achieving greatness. Thankfully, I passed my IB exams with flying colors and managed to get into Penn State to pursue my dream. One fine day, I want to become a finance analyst because I love the business world, handling money, having people work for me, having phone calls every day, setting up meetings. Personally I think better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way and after all if you do really like what you are doing, it doesn’t matter what it is, you can eventually turn it and you can eventually become a master of it. The only way to become a master of something is if you really with it (Newport, 2012). Just like the president of the United States of America, he had to fight to become president, he had to show the people what he believes and what he values.
Conclusion:
I believe that many people today could be living better lives if they focused on doing what they love. Whether we're thinking about what career path to choose, it's important that we follow our passions. When we think about what is needed to be successful in life and in our work, we usually think about large sums of wealth and popularity. When people choose their careers, they are sometimes blinded by money and so choose to follow the paper trail. What many of us often fail to include in this recipe for success is passion. The passion we have, or don't have, for our work should not be underestimated. Sometimes this ingredient could make the biggest difference of all. As quoted by Warren Buffet, the smartest and most successful business man of all time, “Never risk what you have and need for what we don’t have and don’t need.”

...legal assistance, relocation, health benefits, wellness, parenting, childcare, child develepment, exceptional care giving services, and handling family issues in the office.” In order to preserve respected, qualified, and experienced teachers, incentive programs for educators need to be improved. The school district I will be discussing has 18 schools. According to Connecting Business to the Future website, the school district “is one of the newest school districts in their state. In 2008, it was surveyed to have more than 15,500 and 2000 staff members.” The school district is the 2nd largest employer in their county. I interviewed two high school teachers, and one principal from the school district. They all agreed there is a large turn over with teachers and one way to fix the issue is with competitive employee incentives. According to The Community Toolbox website, “Incentive programs are valuable because they increase morale incentives and enable you to keep good help and attract more. It's pretty simple - incentives give the best people in the organization reasons to stay.” Employee incentives are the key to keep the best teachers teaching. The...

Knwledge vs. Godd Life

...Knowledge vs. the Good Life Although education could lead to a good life, there is more to a life worth living. It isn’t all about stepping over the cracks to follow the right way to a good life. The cracks are what many people fall through in our time. These cracks are the struggles that stray people from the “ideal” way to go about life the right way, in someone else’s idea of going about the rules. There are multiple view points on the matter, including the infamous ideal that going to college will lead to a good job. But a good job doesn’t always mean you’ll be happy with what you’re doing. And not to mention the pay to that job is a big deal because remember the college you went to get that job? Well you’re going to have major student loans to pay off. These loans will only build through the years and take years to pay off. As opposed to the “Good Life” which is an important self-assurance that leads to the feeling of fulfillment. “The U.S. has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on knowledge, and the importance of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago. It serves as the gateway to better options and more opportunity” (Importance). And even though tuition is always rising, there are always financial aid opportunities. Financial aid options such as local, merit-based, federal, and corporate. In your college experience you make connections that will help you through years to come. ...

Now its not that quite easy to just go to school graduate and earn 300,000 dollars. This position requires a lot of hands on training as well as practice. A person must have dedication and be self driven; because this job can certainly drown you if you don’t have the dedication. The Monk and the Riddle

...become a successful entrepreneur. What I found fascinating about this book is that the author, instead of giving a list of “must do´s”, is able to connect with the reader trough story-telling and personal experiences, and arise key questions that every entrepreneur must answer before and during a business development in order to be successful. In other words, The monk and The Riddle is no about “how” but about “why” and the importance of passion and vision when it comes to be an entrepreneur. Even if the book does give some specifics techniques that any entrepreneur can use to increase its chances of success, the central themes of the book are existential and philosophical. 2. What did the book teach you about different approaches at entrepreneurship and at being an entrepreneur? One important message of the book is the explanation of VCs´ perspective towards business opportunities and entrepreneurship. VCs are driven for risky ideas that have the potential to become leaders, but most importantly, they invest in the team and in the team´s passion. The team needs to have a combination of soft and hard skills, in order to be able to successfully develop and execute the business plan. Furthermore, entrepreneurs need to focus their business plan on solving the market needs and not just a cash-generating approach. However, the most important message that I learned from the book is the need to think differently from a business man in big company, in a company they “work a plan”, when...

She indeed opened and ran a successful store of her own and landed herself at the top of the industry. She eventually sold her legacy store, becoming one of the wealthiest women in Texas. Thankfully, she decided to train individuals like myself and worked in the industry with an undeniable passion all of her life. Ut Ice Hockey Team

...Report Proper I. Objective By writing this report, I hope to accomplish my goal of bringing NCAA sponsored ice hockey to the University of Tennessee. Our school has among the richest of athletic traditions in the country, and I feel we should expand these traditions out onto the ice. Hockey is by far my favorite sport, and I believe it requires the perfect balance of athletic ability and intelligence. I hope that by raising awareness of UT’s need for a hockey program, I can raise awareness of the sport itself. Regardless of whether or not the university decides to explore the option of adding a program, if I can get one person to begin to follow the sport or even give it a chance, my job will be done. This report hopes to decide what the future holds for University of Tennessee Athletics. Will we continue to proceed with the athletic programs we currently operate, attracting the same athletes and students? Or will we branch out and expand into the hockey rink, maintain the same level of support for our current athletic programs, yet opening up the university to a new demographic of students: those who play and watch the sport of hockey. I hope to open the eyes of the athletic department and make them realize that this is something they should seriously look into and consider. II. Scope While writing this report, I was faced with a few limitations in my research. Due to the current state of the Athletic Department here at UT (with the search for a new head football...

Career Choice

...A software developer is a person with every aspect of software design; in other words they dive into every facet of the software development process. This very reason is why being a software developer is a passion of mine, because in the words of most people in this chosen career “developers make software for the world to use” (Hardiman). Although most interview processes concerning software developing can be tedious as well as challenging, especially over the phone, ultimately becoming a software designer is worth the suffering and sweat. It also helps that a software developer's average salary is higher than most other occupations in the technology field. So, why choose a career in software development; well, it will allow me to pursue my passion for developing software in phones, it’s challenging, and it pays extremely well. Until recently, the iPhone iOS dominated the mobile market, but Google Android has now demonstrably overtaken iPhone in terms of market share, due partly to the power of the Google brand and partly to the platform's openness (Mobile Technology). Moments like this, Google developing something equally great, if not better than, the top developer in the country is why I have such a passion for software design in mobile technology. To create something that reaches all around the globe, knowing it’s the best out there at the moment, would be indescribable.
