Stations of the Cross are a series of paintings devoted to Passion of Christ or Christ’s crucifixion and His final hours (Wikipedia, 2012). Newman’s series is purely abstract; there are fourteen scenes that were painted over the course of eight years. The artist used a palette of only black, raw canvas, and white. He wanted to work in such a way that “the whole canvas would become color and have a sense of light.” It appears that Barnett Newman was improvising new composition for each painting instead of working systematically. The Museum I chose to visit was the Philadelphia Museum of Art, I have always wanted to visit this particular museum and I hope that I will. On September 4th 2012 I visited the Online Museum of the Philadelphia Museum of Art After navigating through the site looking at different works of art and sculptures, I felt so lost in all that I saw it was as if I was transported back in time, I could visualize the painters at work, and it was as if I could feel their passion radiating from these canvases, the vibrant colors, the elaborate brush strokes and attention to minute details all brought across the message of these paintings I spent close to two hours looking at paintings dating from the Baroque period all the way into the modern age but the paintings that really caught my eyes were those from the 17th century. Of these the ones that made an impression on me were: 1. “Virgin and child with Angel” painted in 1642 by Simon Vouet in France. This portrays a virgin half sitting, half crouching with a cherubic infant on her hips while her focus was on the basket of fruits that she was eating from, oblivious of the angel to her right that was playing with the infant in her arms. Her Sikh family tracked her down and kidnapped her, forcing her to call the police when they got her home to say that it was all a mistake. The way we bring up our children is our own choice, but it is a choice that has a lot of importance, whether we bring them up to be independent, in a religious belief or, to rely on their parents to take care of them. Upbringing and how children’s curiosity can sometimes be misunderstood are some of things we experience in the text “On Pale Green Walls” by Clare Wigfall. The story is about a mute little girl who has a fascination with the Virgin Mary. The story is told from her point of view and we only know what she knows. The story starts out in medias res, with the family on their way to church. The story starts at the church and ends at the church, the whole story is centered mainly around religious objects, and the most visible theme is religion. At church Violet notices this beautiful lady dressed in blue, Violet is transfixed with her, she does not know or realize that this lady is the Virgin Mary, and her description of her makes it a bit unclear if she is real or a painting.
