Also Known As:
Patella Tendonitis, also known as “Jumper’s Knee” or “Patellar Tendionpathy”
Definition:
* An inflammation or injury of the patellar tendon, the cord-like tissue that joins the patella (kneecap) to the tibia (shinbone).
Signs/Symptoms:
* Initially be present only as you begin physical activity or just after an intense workout * Progress to the point that it interferes with your sports performance * Eventually may also interfere with daily tasks like climbing stairs

Management/Treatment: * If you are experiencing knee pain self-care measures first, like icing the irritated area and temporarily avoiding activities that affect your symptoms * See a doctor if the pain worsens, it interferes with your ability to perform daily routine activities, it is associated with swelling or redness about the joint * Medication- pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen (Aleve, others) may provide short-term relief. * Therapy- therapy techniques can help reduce the pain. * Stretching Exercises * Strengthening Exercises * Patellar Tendon Strap * IontoPhoresis * Surgery and other procedures * Corticosteroid Injection * Platelet-rich plasma injection * Surgery
Causes:
Overused injury (when repeated movements cause tissue damage or irritation to a particular area of the body).
Risk Factors: * A combination of factors may contribute to the development of patellar tendonitis, such as: * Intensity and frequency of physical activity. * Repeated jumping. * Tight leg muscles * Reduced flexibility in your quadriceps and your hamstrings, which run up the back of your thighs, could increase the strain on your patellar tendon. * Muscular imbalance * If some muscles in your legs are much stronger than others, the stronger muscles could pull harder on your patellar tendon. This uneven pull could cause tendonitis.

...What is a Patellar Dislocation? The patella rests in a groove on the anterior aspect of the femur, called the patellofemoral groove (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 2011). Patellar dislocation occurs when the patella (kneecap) slides laterally out of the patella femoral groove where it normally rests (Ebraheim, 2011). Anatomy The patella bone protects the largest joint in the body, the knee (Temertzoglou & Challen, 2003). The knee is made through the union of 3 bones; the femur, tibia and the patella. (Physio Advisor, n.d.). The patella is situated at the anterior aspect of the knee and lies within the patellofemoral groove (Ebraheim, 2011) which, according to Physio Advisor (n.d.) is located on anterior of the femur. The patella is enveloped by the tendon of the quadriceps muscle, and then goes on to attach to the anterior surface of the tibia (Physio Advisor, n.d.). This relationship forms a joint designed to give the quadriceps muscle leverage when extending the knee (Sports Injury Clinic, n.d.). Each of the bones involved is lined with cartilage to allow cushioning between the bones. The patella also has connective tissue known as the patella retinaculum which attaches it on either side of the femur. This joint is known as the patellofemoral joint (Physio Advisor, n.d.). The patella normally lies in the patellofemoral grove and is only designed to move vertically within it, so dislocation occurs when the patella moves or is moved onto the outside of...

Hard Work

...country the following fall because my brother was a successful distance runner. Although I’m not as good as he is, it has shaped me into who I am today. Unfortunately, my high hopes for my senior season of cross country were crushed when I learned I might not be able to compete at all. It all started in June 2010. Staying upfront with the varsity girls, I was doing pretty well. Then one day I felt a pull in my left knee. I ignored it, thinking it was all in my head. But all through the next week it still hurt and got worse. Then, during a workout one day, I reached out my leg and felt a snap. Immediately, I fell to the ground, unable to put any weight on my knee. I went to the doctor later that day; only to find out I overused my patella tendon. Even now, I cringe when thinking about it. He told me there was a good chance I would not be able to compete that season, which had just begun. Feeling my throat tighten, I looked away so he wouldn’t see me cry. Determined to compete before the end of my final cross country season, I wasn’t willing to let this injury slow me down. First my coach had me start speed walking. I felt like the middle-aged ladies walking through my neighborhood, but I was willing to do anything‚ even look ridiculous ‚ if it might help me recover more quickly. Two weeks later, I was able to start lightly jogging for twenty minutes. By the third meet I was competing again, but I knew I could do better. At the very last meet, I ran faster than my...

Who I Am

...Sam Lincoln September 14, 2014 Who I Am Wake up son, get your shit together. Why aren’t you taking your future seriously? You better buckle down, you’re running out of time. These are some of the things I have heard my entire life. I’m just your average young man that has missed out on opportunities to become something more than average. I haven’t always made the right decisions when it comes down to it. Not anymore though, that ship has sailed and I’m hoping to better myself each and every day. Growing up I did what every kid does, get into trouble. Sometimes I would take it to the extreme, like when I was nine years old and almost burned my entire house to the ground. I’m laughing as I write and think about that experience. What kid wouldn’t love to play with fire at that age though? Or another situation when I was in high school and a teacher tried pulling a Miami Heat hat off of my head on “Hat day”. “Hat day” was a day where you were allowed to wear any hat that you’d like, but the teacher apparently had a problem with me in the first place and didn’t like the way I was wearing it. It was like he literally wanted to fight me over a hat in the middle of the hallway. I got suspended for a couple days because I didn’t “cooperate” with an authority figure… I’m shaking my head as I write this but these types of things don’t really impact your future as much though at that age. I grew up with an older brother and the things he did really influenced...

Dog ./Mspeech

...One my favorite quotes is, “Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made” by Roger Caras. Is there anything better than a happy dog? One look at their excited faces, waging tails, and smiling eyes is enough to melt even the hardest of hearts. Owning a dog is one of my greatest pleasures. If you don’t own a dog, maybe there will be at least one reason listed here of why u should. If you dog own a dog, you already have million reasons to love them. Taking care of dogs requires learning what they need in order to live a full, happy, healthy, life. I’ve have read many books on how to raise dogs the right way. One of my favorite sources, come from the book What a Difference a Dog Makes: Big Lessons on Life, Love and Healing from a Small Pooch. By Dana Jennings. This book offers an enduring if uneven look at the wisdom and healing powers of his prize miniature poodle Bizsu. There are many benefits to owning a dog. Dogs can improve your quality of life in many ways. They can also prepare you for future responsibilities and commitments. According to the American Humane Association, there are between 6-8 million dogs that enter shelters system each year. Over half of these dogs are euthanize. Together we can make a difference in these animals life and place them in the loving homes they deserve to be in. People...

Badminton

...Common Badminton Injury Badminton Injury does occur to a player when they are not properly warmed up or their techniques are not correct. It also happens when fatigue kicks in after playing or training for too long. Also there are times when you don't really know what hit you. | So I think it is good that you understand the few common badminton injuries in case you are unlucky and injured yourself. However, you should always seek professional medical advice if that happens. Acute Badminton Injuries Ankle Sprain This is a common badminton injury, usually accidental. It may occur when the athlete steps on his partner's foot and land with a plantar flexed, inverted and supinated foot. Most sprains occur on the lateral ligament complex, a group of ligaments on the outside of the ankle. It will result in a painful swelling in the outer aspect of the ankle, usually causing a partial or total rupture of one or more ligaments. Apply RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate) to reduce swelling. It may also result in other complications eg. fracture, tendon injuries and loss of proprioceptive control. It may take days to a few months to heal with adequate rehabilitation. Meniscus Tear Normally caused by a sudden twisting movement of the knee during footwork resulting in the tear of the meniscus. There will be pain in the joint-line of the knee, mild swelling and unable to flex or extend the leg in full. It may be having accompanying collateral or cruciate ligament injury...

Fracture Literature Review

...tension wires. Several versions followed including that of Hempel, Goetze and finally the models popularized by Ilizarov (1971). Since then multiple fixator designs have been developed monolateral, bilateral, quadrilateral, triangular, half-circular, circular, all wire, all screws and hybridfixators (wires and screws). The art, principles and techniques of external fixation continue to develop and external fixation is playing a larger and more definitive role in the management of high energy fractures.( Ricardo and Mecheel ,2008) The 18th century saw the evolution of modern concepts of rational treatment .The concept of internal fixation dates back to the mid-1800s, Lister introduced open reduction, internal fixation (ORIF) of patella fractures in the 1860s. Use of plates, screws, and wires was first documented in the 1880s and 1890s. Early surgical fixation initially was complicated by many obstacles, such as infection, poorly conceived implants and techniques, metal allergy, and a limited understanding of the biology and mechanics of fracture healing . During the 1950s, Danis and Muller began to define the principles and techniques of internal fixation.Over the past 40 years, advancements in biologic and mechanical science have led to contemporary fixation theories and techniques .At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century some surgeons attempted open reduction and different kinds of internal fixation with either calf bone plates, intramedullary...
