As we all know discrimination has been around for a while now. So what really is the true meaning of discrimination? Discrimination is when an individual or even a group of people are treated differently due to race, national origin, age, gender, etc. Never once will the person doing the discriminating shed light on what that person’s qualifications and individual behavior are, nor have they ever cared. To illustrate the point, here are a few examples of employment discrimination. Up until the 1960s, almost all police departments, especially the southern ones, never would hire officers that were African American. If you were lucky enough to be hired as an African American officer, there were many restrictions that came with it. For example African American officers could not arrest Caucasians, and were not allowed to work in Caucasian neighborhoods. As an African American you were kept in minority neighborhoods. These are the types of work practices that show what discrimination is. Just because of an individual’s race you were treated much differently with many restrictions. Lastly around the same time frame, males were not allowed to be flight attendants. Only females were allowed to work this position. This is an example of gender type discrimination. Never were qualifications and experience reviewed about an individual first.
In today’s day and age, police agencies and our criminal justice system as a whole still show many patterns of discrimination. Some of those discrimination patterns are but not limited to contextual discrimination, individual acts of discrimination, and institutional discrimination. When there are established policies set in place but their outcomes result in disparities it creates what we call institutionalized discrimination. ...Discrimination The term discrimination refers to a distinct treatment of something or someone, based on a predisposed judgment. Discrimination is the act of being bias or in favor of something based on factors which make up the persons social and physical being, for example someone’s class, job, appearance, race, age or sex. Why does discrimination exist? Discrimination occurs because individuals or groups feel they are superior to others; therefore try to create prejudices and stereotypes which bring another group down. An example of this would be a case of racism in the 1800’s where white boys would not let black children join in with their games such as football due to the fact they were of different ethnicity. This could be because they were raised by racist parents who do not want their own children mixing with other races, or simply because they feel threatened by the black children’s talent and athleticism so do not let them join in at all. I believe that as long as there are negative human qualities such as hate, anger, jealousy and envy in the world, discrimination will always exist as people judge their own opinions to be more accurate and do not accept the views of others. Discrimination against appearance is the most atrocious, yet common thing in daily life. Everything is being based on looks and personality rather than on intelligence. ...One observation I made about the authors response to prejudice in “Just Walk On By” was that the author, Staples, seemed accustomed to the racial discrimination he often faced. He started to view these incidents of prejudice as quite commonly occurring. A second observation about the authors response to prejudice is that he chooses, perhaps unconsciously, to remain a shadow to the subject. Staples states, Timid, but a survivor.
