...The Rwanda Genocide Xenophobia, the hatred or fear of certain targeted ‘outsiders,’ is one of the most destructive group phenomena in human history. Various incidents in our collective past portray how xenophobia has negatively impacted the lives of so many people. One of the most outright and horrific displays of this destructive force was seen in the German treatment of the Jewish race before and during the Second World War. These events were part of the holocaust, associated with the Nazi notions of racial superiority especially in contrast with their notion of Jewish inferiority. Racial superiority has caused much violence and many deaths for those who have been labeled by the ‘superior’ as ‘inferior.’ This violence has been spawned mostly by an extreme hatred for those viewed as different or inferior. Furthermore, such feelings of hatred have been translated into outright acts of violence against those viewed as inferior, and this at times often prompted retaliation against their oppressors, such as the case in Rwanda. With these premises, the world has been witness to various acts of violence, including the massacre of a significant number of people, all in the name of racial superiority. ...The place I chose to observe was the Recreation Center here at Illinois State University. I observed the second floor of the building on February 17, 2014. I went around 2:00 P.M in the afternoon, and at this time it is usually pretty crowded. Most of the people there were men but there were definitely a good amount of women there as well. If I had to give a percentage it would probably be 60/40% ratio of Men/Female. In this setting, the main focus is for people to come in and workout. Many people come in to workout for different reasons though; I know of some of my female friends that come in to actually achieve a good workout so they stay in shape. Some of their friends come in for a completely different reason, to look at guys. I wasn’t totally shocked when my friends told me they did this, but they told me it happens more than you would think. I actually witnessed a lot of different behaviors while being up there. A lot of people, both male and female, had some sort of mad or angry face on them. This doesn’t really surprise me too much because when working out, most people need to get angry to push to that next level. Another common facial expression I saw was happy. I think most of the time when I saw happy faces was right after that had just finished a set or their entire workout. The completion date of this post-impressionism still life, was in the year of 1889. The place of creation was Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, France. Vincent van Gogh painted this picture soon after his release from the hospital, where he was recovering from the disastrous final days of Paul Gauguin’s stay with him in Arles. In a long letter to his brother Theo posted January 23, 1889, he mentions creating this painting alongside several other issues, including the need to make money through picture sales. He likely had the market in mind in painting this still life. Van Gogh was clearly attracted to the shapes and hues of the citrus fruit arrayed in the wicker basket, and the way their varied orb shapes play against the weave of the dried sticks, the whole set off by the prickly needles of the cypress branches.
