Published originally as a classic Jane Austen novel, Emma is retold and brought to life in a production by Paul Gordon. A young woman decides to play Cupid among her social circle, believing herself to have much luck and ease with it. However, realizing, love is nothing like she imagined, she must undo her mistakes while facing her own romantic feelings. The performance was enhanced by the actors’ ability to play their roles very convincingly as well as the directors’ intelligent use of the stage and costume. The actors’ compelling portrayal of and between each character enhanced the show. Lianne Marie Dobbs delivered each of her lines with high energy, excitement, and full emotion.The songs,such as “Badly Done”, were performed similarly. perfectly portraying Emma’s energetic personality. The lines delivered by Leigh Ann Larkin, playing Harriet Smith, were enjoyable; however, two of her musical piece performance were much more memorable.The songs “Mr. Robert Martin” and “Humiliation” became very catchy, while at the same …show more content…
During the course of the show, the lights were focused on main characters of the seen, allowing the audience to see the scene clearly. In addition, while Emma Woodhouse did not have much time in between her scenes, her costumes hinted at the context of the scene. During the scenes at Emma’s house, the actress wore a simple white dress, but in the party or picnic scenes, she wore a brown vest over it, indicating that the scene was more formal. When unintroduced characters were mentioned, they appeared in an area under the stage; moreover when characters wrote letters or were having parallel thoughts, the actors appeared on opposite sides of the stage, displaying that the both side were different scene but connected.
