Pay
LSU’s student athletes have been participating in intercollegiate sports for over a century, however recently these athletes have helped accomplish something that modern day college athletics has never seen before. A massive revenue producing company has been successfully created at LSU Athletics. College athletes are LSU’s most sought after employees, yet they don’t receive a dime of extra compensation for the millions of dollars LSU receives from their drudgery. LSU’s student athletes, as well as NCAA student athletes around the nation should be paid because they are the direct cause in helping bring in millions of dollars revenue, yet some of the students who help rake in millions cannot afford some of the basic necessities, and paying them may do a lot to help solve the corruption in collegiate sports. During the most recent athletic season starting in 2010 and ending in 2011, LSU’s 20 teams boasted revenue of over $106.4 million according an article on the website The Business of College Sports. The university walked away with a profit of over $10.4 million dollars after using the revenue money to fund the spending of each program including: equipment, travel, coaches’ salaries, etc. Now there are teams that only produce a small amount of profit, if any, for the university, but there are sports such as football and basketball that produce millions of dollars of revenue not only for the school’s athletic department, but for the university at well. According to an article in the Huffington Post, in the 2010 football season, LSU raked in $68.8 million in revenue and $43.25 million in profit. If the $43.25 million in profit were to be spread across each of the 85 scholarship players on LSU’s roster that season, each player would be worth roughly around $508,800. It costs the average out of state student around $19,000 in tuition to attend LSU, so if each football player is worth over $500,000, there should be at least some compensation for a program that is bringing in the kind of profit that LSU’s athletic program is bringing in. Even though these athletes are the main attraction in these profitable sporting events, they are still college kids with no money and without the time to get a job. Scholarship’s aren’t actually “full rides” like they are made out to be, states Frederic J. Frommer, writer for the Associated Press. Students on full academic scholarships are often left living below poverty line at over 85 percent of schools. The average scholarship usually leaves an athlete around $3,000 short of everyday living expenses. This makes it difficult for the player to live comfortably when they don’t have time for a job to make up this monetary deficit. According to Frommer, the average FBS football player spends 43.3 hours per week in practice, and the average Division 1 men’s basketball player will spend 39 hours per week. On top of that workload, when the players do have time off of school during the offseason when they could be making some money, they are requested to attend summer work outs. The dining halls aren’t open on the weekends and meal transfer sites close for the week at 3 on Friday; how is a collegiate athlete supposed to eat on the weekends when he/she is often living below the poverty line? It’s situations like this one that make the illegal offers from boosters even more attracting to the young student athletes. Just this last football season, the college athletic world has been shocked by violations upon violations stemming from the illegal interactions of players and boosters. LSU had to give up 2 of its football scholarships and was put on a year of probation through self-imposed punishments stemming from a violation of NCAA rules regarding a housing dispute with one of its former players and coaches while on a recruiting visit. Corruption in the NCAA is running rampant and one way to slow it down would be to allow the athletes simple compensation from the school’s earnings. When players accept donations from boosters or sell their memorabilia for money, it isn’t because they are trying to gain a fortune, it’s because they are just trying to have something to eat or buy clothes. Player compensation would also reduce the amount of athletes that leave early without getting their degree. Most of these athletes grew up below the poverty line and the first opportunity they are going to take the first opportunity they can get to provide for themselves, which is why they leave early. If the players were compensated in the least bit, it would entice more and more athletes to stay in school and earn their degree, because an athletic career can only take someone so far in life. Some oppose the payment of college athletes by saying that it would take away their amateurism or that smaller schools wouldn’t be able to fund the payment of their own athletes. NCAA basketball players are only playing for their freshman year and then darting for the NBA, can we really still call that amateurism? The average athlete spends around 40 hours, a full work week, on the practice field; can we really still call that amateurism? The lesser schools would have a bit of a struggle finding ways to pay these players, but each conference could implement something of a shared wealth system just as the professional sports organizations have. All of these arguments that people have against paying the players can be countered with just a reasonable if not more reasonable debate on why compensating these athletes is necessary for the evolution of collegiate sports. Times are changing, and with the change in time comes the change in infrastructure. Businesses give bonuses to employees when their work is appreciated, and I know the NCAA appreciates the work of their college athletes. Let the athletes receive some of the compensation they deserve.

Should College Players Get Pay

...basketball and football are the most profitable collegiate sports. For example, March Madness the college basketball post season made $1.15 billion in ad revenue in 2013 (Van Ripper). It is a proven fact that college athletics is a revenue giant so why can’t these athletes get paid to play. Instead, college athletes the main attraction, for endorsement companies, and fanatics, are paid with a scholarship that is worth, an average of $50,000 in four years depending on universities (Jennings). In addition, collegiate athletes are forced to agree to harsh rules and regulations that prevent them from being normal collage students. Therefore, college athletes deserve financial recognition for the merchandise profit they generate, as well as the opportunity to pursue their own financial gains. As athletes, they work hard on the field every day to bring in fans and wins for their school; it’s only fair that they are rewarded for their efforts, at least in some small way. Background, According to the NCAA in order to play college sports every athlete must be amateur certified. Yet, what exactly makes a collegiate athlete an amateur? The NCAA has struggled to properly answer this question for a long time. Therefore, as of 2007, the NCAA amateur rules are as follows. Collage athletes are prohibited from, signing contracts with professional teams, earning salary for participating in athletics, earning prize money above actual and necessary expenses, playing with professionals, trying out...

College Palyers Getting Paid

...Paying of College Athletes The NCAA should allow colleges to give college athletes a weekly pay check for playing a sport. With all the work that college athletes put in at practice, games, and then sitting in a class room they disserve to get paid for it. Unlike other college students athletes are prohibited by the NCAA from getting a job and can only receive scholarships as a source of income (Siebold). Not only is being a college student hard enough but being a college athlete is even harder. Athletes have to wake up early to make it to a practice that could start at 7 or 8. After practicing for 2-3 hours, it is time to rush and make it to class on time. They sit in classes all day long and have to find time between classes and practice to study as well as having a game or practice that night. If they have to travel out of state to go to a game they may leave early in the morning or the night before and may stay the night as well in that town. Even with the NCAA not allowing an athlete to get a job, when would an athlete have time to work? With not being able to work how are they suppose to be able to buy food or pay bills if they have some to pay? Not everyone that goes to college comes from families with money and are not able to afford what some of their classmates are able to afford. When you look at the amount of money that a college coach gets paid you would be surprised. In most states the coaches of football or basketball teams are the highest paid public workers...

Professional Sports Industry Changes for the Future

...9 Player Safety…………………………………………………………………………..11 ABSTRACT Professional sports are leagues that are made for the best of the best athletes in sports. Once a player leaves the collegiate level of sports and moves into the professional level, he is now competing every day for his job. Owners try hard to build their team from the ground up. When a team is struggling, owners try to find new solutions to bring in team revenue and on the other hand when a team is successful owners try hard to keep players by offering large contracts that they can afford. To keep order on teams, leagues have strict drug testing policy that keeps players healthy and allows the playing field to be fair. Leagues make changes for the better of the players and the fans. In order to market effectively leagues do what it takes to allow more access to the fans by using technology. Commissioners take notice on feedback from players and fans in order to make the sport safer to play and fun to watch. When watching a professional sports game, we do not see the orchestrating job of the league commissioner, team owners, and players. From players entering the league at a young age from college, they need to be ready to compete for their position and take in all the rules the league hand out. Super star players carry so much pressure to bring financial success to the team and the. It is important for the owner of the team to play those players for leadership and talents. Do Professional Athletes Make Too Much Money?

...Athletes are treated as celebrities in American society and idolized by young athletes. The kids who see what their favorite player is doing through the media also are being influenced by them. The example that professional athletes set is very important because they looked up to. The example that many athletes set is unfortunately a negative one. Most people think that athletes make too much money but there are those that believe they are paid fairly. The enormous amount of money that professional athletes receive is having a negative effect on kids today. Athletes should make less money to play a game because the huge contracts that they receive give them power. They are concerned with making money and not the example that they are creating for today’s youth. Professional players feel that they earn every dollar of the millions they make every year to play a game. Those who think that players are paid fairly in professional sports argue that since athletes make so much money for their teams they should compensated accordingly. According to Forbes magazine "The average NFL team is worth $957 million" (Forbes, 2012). Teams generate large profits and as a result can afford to pay athletes large salaries. The past NFL season, players and team owners tried to come to an agreement before the season. According to Pete Prisco, a senior writer for CBS Sports "The players and owners can talk all they want about health issues, playing 18 games and any other issue thrown into these talks, but...

Steroids

...win a state championship. The team has the skills and also has many great athletes as well as other schools do. The thing that other schools have is strength and faster people on their team. I have come up with the greatest solution that will make Saline football players and fans go crazy. The plan will come into effect starting now. By starting the taking of the steroids now, the players will be ready go by next august in their first game. The summer conditionings for football and all the lifting they do just don’t seem to pay off when season comes. During the summer they lift really hard, run a lot, and players work on their skills. When it comes game time in August, Saline thinks they are a step ahead of the other team on the field, but when the opponent steps on the field Saline becomes scared. The players become scared because they are really small compared to the opponents. Therefore, the other team has an advantage because they are a lot stronger. Steroids are the answer for the Saline football program. The program will do a fundraising event in which the team will earn a lot of money that will pay for all the steroids. Every Saline football player in the high school will start to take these steroids. Every player will go to a workout before school and receive one shot of this powerful drug. This drug will...

...case has three fundamental issues 1. Roster depreciation; 2. Player compensation; 3. Transfer pricing of related party operations (stadium costs); 1. Roster Depreciation (I side with the Owners) The owners recognize depreciation as of a value placed on the player roster at the time the baseball club was purchased. They do this for two reasons. 1. It lowers the value of the team and second for tax purposes. This is very legal and is normally used unless the company wants to show a higher profit. However, the team’s roster is usually its biggest assets and the only reason the owners are doing this is to show lower profits and pay less taxes 2. Player Compensation (I side with the Owners) Players compensation is a significant part of the teams expenses. The team uses accrual accounting which recognizes revenues to expenses at the time in which the transaction occurs rather than when payment is made. Although players’ compensations are not paid immediately in cash it is very likely the team will pay them. If the team does what the players suggest and deffers compensation expenses it would not show accurate expenses and therefore over value itself. 3. Transferg pricing of related party operations: (I side with the players) This is a common accounting practice. Our company actually does this with payroll. We have a staffing agency that operates our nursing homes. We charge for LPN and RN double what we pay them. This way we aren’t showing to much profits to the...

...times. Gaming companies are allowed to use their likeness and the student will never see one penny. Is it fair that a college athlete has worked all their life to become the best of the best in their conference and although they are the ones that put in all the hard work someone else make all the millions? Coaches push their athletes to the max to be the greatest and to win them a championship. Coaches may not care about their player’s education because their players are allowed to miss up to a quarter of all class days during their spring semester. Sometimes coaches will cheat the system to assist certain players because they know if they do not make the grades or get into any sort of trouble outside the field, their star athletes will not be able to play in the Big Games. This is an important fact because some of the mishaps players get themselves into come from their lack of having money to do certain things. Critics do not like how some athletes are getting greedy by asking to get paid because most of players received scholarships up to $25,000 per year for a full division 1 school. So they wonder why they should get paid on top of that. Athletes tend to think they are making their school a lot of money by broadcasting them nationally on television, going to the game physically (game tickets,...

Managements Role in Players Being Violent

...Managements Role in Players Being Violent Jennifer Grant BUS/ December 3, 2012 Dr. David Snow Managements Role in Players Being Violent When sports first started up they were meant to be something fun, to relieve stress, and teach youth about working hard, time management, teamwork, and to build character (Champion, Ruddell, & Thornton, 2012). Over the years, sports have gotten more and more competitive. Sports should have a positive impact on our community and serve as entertainment. If entertainment to our society is violence and causing harm to others then we are living in a messed up world. Management plays a major role in this violence by either being to tranquil in how they handle violence or even if they are encouraging the violence. When I was growing up the sports I participated in taught me about sportsmanship, character, being a good loser and winner, showing respect to others, teamwork, hard work, time management, social skills and more. My coaches played a big part in that, they made sure that we played fairly, and always played with sportsmanship. The coaches that I played under were great role models and winning did not mean anything if we didn’t do it the right way. In high school, we made it to the final four twice, won district all four years, were regional runner-ups twice and won regionals twice. We were very successful and at no point was violence being encouraged, and if there was any bad sportsmanship or violence...

When the quarter back throws the ball that is represented as physics. Also the motion of the ball and the force when you make tackles represents physics. The more physics you know the better you will understand the game of football. Here are a few words you should be familiar with acceleration is the rate of change in velocity, force is the influence on a body that causes it to accelerate, mass is the amount of substances that an object contains, momentum is the mathematical product of the mass of a moving object and its velocity, inertia is the resistance of a moving object to a change in its speed or direction and the resistance of a stationary object to being moved, torque is a force that tends to produce rotation or twisting, velocity is the speed with which an object travels over a specific distance during a measured amount of time, center of mass is the area of mass that exerts maximum force. These words are very well used in football, and physics so to continue my essay on the physics of football I will explain the proper ways of tackling. Broke

...when they were pro athletes and how it is harder than it seems to hold on to the millions of dollars that they make in their careers. I for one knew that many players went broke fast, but I honestly had no idea how they did that until this film. To be honest it always made me somewhat mad that all my favorite athletes were in the tabloids all the time because they let all that money gets away from them. Little did I know, outside influences were taking everything away from them. It is important to express my overall reaction and also talk about something that really shocked me. First of all, after the film ended I had an instant reaction and opinion on the film and it’s subjects. I really felt for the former players who were thrown into this world of big money, fast cars, and women. There were so many influences that affected the way they spent their cash. For example, these guys are thrown into this world as 18-21 year olds that many had never even cashed a check before. Before they even get that first check people are trying to take advantage of that, as agents and bad parents look out for their own interests. These agents take a big piece of the pie, and sometimes cycle money into personal investments without these young men knowing it. On the other hand, parents start taking money from these young men in order to pay off their mortgages and other debt that has piled up. Then the extended family and friends try to get a piece of the pie as well until, like Bernie Kosar, they...
