Pedro Menendez de Aviles was probably the person who has played the largest role in shaping Florida. He was the man who claimed Florida for Spain and made the first ever permanent city in Florida which endured many battles. He founded the first city in all of North America.Overall he was an very huge help for the progression and founding of Florida. When Menendez first became a sea-bearer at the young age of 14, he was hired by Charles 1 of Spain to ward off pirates from the coast. This escalated and eventually he became the captain of an entire Indies fleet. He then did such an outstanding job that the new king, King Phillip the 2, granted him access to start a colony in Florida to drive out the French. Eventually Menendez and 2,000 men
