How pendulum length affects the time of swing
AIM: To find the relationship between the length of a simple pendulum and the period of swing
Hypothesis: The longer the length of a simple pendulum, the longer will be the period of oscillation
Materials: Retort stand, pendulum mass, clamp, ruler, stop watch and string
Method:
Functional Diagram

Procedure * Set up retort stand and other equipment * Decide angle of swing (40o) * Measure length by metre ruler * Measure length of pendulum (20cm) * Measure the time of 4 swings * Average the time taken of 4 swings * Change the length of pendulum to (30cm) * Measure period of 4 swings * Average the time taken of 4 swings * Change the length of pendulum to (40cm) * Measure the time taken of 4 swings * Average the time taken 4 swings
For safety (nothing important) A. Average the 4 swings B. Repeat the experiment as often as possible
Results
(See assignment book)
Conclusion
There is a relationship between the pendulum length and the period of time taken for the pendulum to swing. When the length of the string is increased, the value of the period also increases. When the length of the string is decreases, the period also decreases. The length of pendulum does change the duration of the swing.

Discussion A. To improve the experiment the angle (40o) has to be the same, the length of pendulum has to be changed and its mass always stays the same. * Set up at least 1 more trial using exactly same equipment * Set up a trial using same equipment but different measurements(angle, string length, mass) * Set up trial using different equipment to see if result is the same or different.

#### The Pit and the Pendulum

...1 The Pit and the Pendulum By Edgar Allan Poe I WAS sick—sick unto death with that long agony; and when they at length unbound me, and I was permitted to sit, I felt that my senses were leaving me. The sentence—the dread sentence of death—was the last of distinct accentuation which reached my ears. After that, the sound of the inquisitorial voices seemed merged in one dreamy indeterminate hum. It conveyed to my soul the idea of revolution—perhaps from its association in fancy with the burr of a mill-wheel. This only for a brief period, for presently I heard no more. Yet, for a while, I saw—but with how terrible an exaggeration! I saw the lips of the black- robed judges. They appeared to me white—whiter than the sheet upon which I trace these words—and thin even to grotesqueness; thin with the intensity of their expression of firmness—of immovable resolution—of stern contempt of human torture. I saw that the decrees of what to me was Fate were still issuing from those lips. I saw them writhe with a deadly locution. I saw them fashion the syllables of my name; and I shuddered because no sound succeeded. I saw, too, for a few moments of delirious horror, the soft and nearly imperceptible waving of the sable draperies which enwrapped the walls of the apartment. And then my vision fell upon the seven tall candles upon the table. At first they wore the aspect of charity, and seemed white slender angels who would save me; but then, all at once, there came a most deadly nausea......

#### Blackwood Ballistic Pendulum

...Experiment 6: Blackwood Ballistic Pendulum September 18, 2013 Jamal Wright Zachary Floyd Christopher Wilson Experiment 6 Blackwood Ballistic Pendulum Jamal Wright, Zachary Floyd, Christopher Wilson Abstract Our goal of this experiment is to determine muzzle velocity by two methods: 1) employing uniform linear motion relations, the kinematic equations; 2) using the principles of conservation of energy and momentum. In this paper, we aim to validate the law of conservation of momentum. We do so by comparing results from two experiments conducted with a single ballistic launcher/pendulum apparatus. Hypothesis: The initial velocity of a ballistic pendulum can be determined using the law of conservation of momentum. Momentum should be conserved, based on the law of conservation of energy. If momentum is conserved, the velocity found using the law of conservation of momentum equation should equal the velocity found using projectile motion. Due to the law of conservation of momentum, the total momentum before the pendulum is swung equals the net momentum after the pendulum is swung. Introduction/Purpose The ballistic pendulum is a device where a ball is shot into and captured by a pendulum. The pendulum is initially at rest but acquires energy from the collision with the ball. Using conservation of energy it is possible to find the initial velocity of the ball. In this ball-pendulum system we cannot use the conservation of mechanical energy to relate the......

#### Pendulum Lab Report

...Danierian Williams Ms. Cooper Physics 2 December 2013 Periods of a Pendulum Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine how the varying masses from the three large washers influence the period of a pendulum. Data/Observation: Mass | Time for 10 Periods | 10 Period Average | Period | 17.3g | Trial 1 | 19.77sec | 20.05sec | 2.01sec | | Trial 2 | 20.74sec | | | | Trial 3 | 19.64sec | | | 33.8g | Trial 1 | 20.15sec | 20.18sec | 2.02sec | | Trial 2 | 20.40sec | | | | Trial 3 | 19.99sec | | | 50.3g | Trial 1 | 19.93sec | 19.69sec | 2.00sec | | Trial 2 | 19.52sec | | | | Trial 3 | 19.61sec | | | Conclusion: In conclusion, the data shows that if the varying mass of the washers at the end of the paper clip hook increase, then the time it takes for the pendulum to complete 10 periods will not change greatly. In result, the average periods of the three masses are close in time (2.01sec, 2.02sec, and 2.00sec). Variables: * The independent variable in the experiment is the number of washers and mass on the end of the paper clip hook. * The dependent variable in the experiment is the time it takes for the pendulum to complete 10 periods. * The controlled variable is the 20 degree amplitude from the resting point. Procedure: After assembling the pendulum and taking the mass of the washers, align the protractor’s 90° mark with the vertical string and use it as your 0 point of reference. While facing the protractor,...

...one can conclude that as the length gets longer the period will increase. When two pendulums have different lengths but the same amplitude, the shorter pendulum will have a smaller arc to travel through. Because the distance the mass travels from maximum displacement to equilibrium is less while the acceleration of both pendulums remains the same, the shorter pendulum will have a shorter period. Mass vs. Period: The graph done in class can show how the change in mass does not affect the period. An example that can demonstrate this kind of behavior is when the bobs of two pendulums differ in mass, the heavier mass provides a larger restoring force, but it also needs a larger force to achieve the same acceleration. This is in some way similar to the situation for objects in free fall, which all have the same acceleration regardless of their mass. Because the acceleration for both periods is the same, the period for both is also the same. Amplitude: The graph recorded shows how the amplitude does not affect the period of a pendulum either. When the amplitude of a pendulum increases, the restoring force also increases proportionally. Because force is proportional to acceleration, the initial acceleration will be greater. However, the distance this pendulum must cover is also greater. If you consider small angles, for example, the effects of the two increasing quantities cancel and the pendulums period remains the same....

#### The Pit and the Pendulum.

...The Pit and the Pendulum. The pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe involves the story of the man who is facing death in every moment. It is a thriller and is very imposing. The story is told by an unnamed narrator who talks about the experiences in a pit in Spain. The story is about how he manages to escape death when it was right upon him. It shows the emotions that he goes through and what he feels when he is looking death in the eye and his joys when he manages to escape from the jaws of death. The story runs through the emotions felt by a person that was about to die and was perplexed about how he should die but still had the will to survive. He goes through many difficulties in his bid to survive. Many very fascinating ideas strike him and he manages to pull things that he would not have dreamed. For instance, when he puts a mark on the wall to make sure he is not going round and round when he could touch the walls. He had the presence of mind to know that he will go round and round till infinity if the pit was circular and he hence left a mark on the wall. He similarly decided to jump off the pit than being squashed to death. That as a choice he would have never had to make in any other circumstance. In this story, Poe shows an irony- an irony where a person becomes that what he hate the most. The captors of the narrator were the Spanish and in the time of the Spanish inquisition the church was against science and hence no scientific activities were tolerated. The main......

#### The Pit and the Pendulum

...The Pit and The Pendulum is arguably one of Edgar Allan Poe's greatest works. The Pit and The Pendulum spins a web of insanity over the main character during the Spanish Inquisition. The setting of the story helps shroud it in the theme of fear, torture, and madness. The pit, i believe symbolizes humanity's fear of the unknown, it can also represent the gate to hell, seeing how this story is set during the Spanish Inquisition this theory is highly plausible. Also the psych of Poe himself can be used as an example of an effective horror tone and atmosphere. But this story isnt just horror is it? No this goes much deeper than that by addressing the malleability of the human mind. In the text it states that the narrator witnesses a trio of white candles turn into angels and then shift to his tormentors. What sets this story apart is that it instills a feeling of terror into the reader with its heavy emphasis on the senses of the narrator, unlike poes other works such as the Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven which rely on the supernatural element typical of horror stories. The pendulum which filleted anyone unlucky enough to be caught in it’s wake, symbolizes the fallibility of humans as a whole and the march of time till death. As the narrator describes it as swinging by every one second. This helps create an extremely tense atmosphere during the scene in which the narrator is tied down with the pendulum swinging by every one second, Poe masterfully executed this in a way that......

#### The Pendulum of Phd Student Role Identity

...The Pendulum of PhD Student Role Identity David M. Penn Walden University April 12, 2015 The Pendulum of PhD Student Role Identity Bansel (2011) noted that as citizens traverse through life, each individual develops a framework of his or her own role identity and how the interpretation of identity interacts within the interpersonal, societal, and academic landscape (pp. 544). This development of role identity owes its genesis to the social-psychological disciplines as emergent and ephemeral rather than a static concept (p. 550). Jazvac-Martek (2009) asserted that the defining of academic identities is integral to the pursuit of all aspects of life but especially salient when focused on the PhD student, an area that lacks significant research and data (pp. 253-554). Barnacle and Mewburn (2010) contend that what the PhD track commitment requires, as a lifestyle, is an evolution in how we as students see ourselves and how we see our emerging roles in society (pp. 433-444). Jazvac-Martek (2009) compares the doctoral student’s journey is a transformative “rite-of-passage” for those who seek to embed academic inquiry into every aspect of his or her life and utilize the knowledge gleaned to further the common good of society as scholar-practitioners (pp. 253-262). According to Jazvac-Martek (2009), she reported that there needs to be perspicuous and prescribed support structures in doctoral education so that the doctoral students may come to understand his or her identity......

#### Time in “the Pit and the Pendulum”

...Time In “The Pit And The Pendulum” He wished time would go faster, he wished he already dead. The short story “The Pit And The Pendulum” by Edgar Allan Poe is about the torments endured by a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition. He faints and awakens in a dark dungeon to experience the slowest, most painful, and most terrifying death at all. In the story, Poe uses many words in reference to time to show that time is passing. At the head of the story, “I was sick to death of the torture.” Shows time is passing. The Punishment from the judges is repeated again and again to make the narrator sick of it. Also, there are many used of transition words show the time had passed. Such as “then...”, “Soon...”. Likewise, The quote in the second paragraph “...would they keep me for months in the dark dungeon?” shows the time passed and the narrator had been imprison for a long period. Moreover, “When I woke. There was a dim light in the room.” in paragraph eight reveals time is passing. The narrator uses the uncertain time to create the feeling of time passing. It suggest that as time is passing in the dungeon, He’s just waiting for his death to come. In addition, In paragraph eleven, “ I slept, I woke, Days passed.” tells that time passed in six words only. The punishment was passing very slowly. The inquisitors’ punishment was the slowest, most painful, and terrifying death at all. Those inquisitors are doing what exactly they wanted. Furthermore, the narrator uses sensory detail of......

#### Pendulum Coursework

...Pendulum coursework The year 10 extended group is investigating a pendulum; each one of us is going to change something to it, to make the investigation more interesting. The things that we could change are: * The length of the string (20,40,60,80,100,120,140,160,180,200; in cm) * The weight of the plasticine (55 grams) * Shape of the object, aerodinamicity (ball, sphere) * The angle of where you started to throw the plasticine, (45º) The things that we could measure or observe are: * Amounts of laps in a given time (10 laps) * In how much time it stops * Its speed/ acceleration * Time to do certain amount of laps I decided that I will change (independent) the length of the string of the pendulum (measurements: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, 180, 200; in cm) and I will measure/observe (dependent) time to do certain amount of laps. (10 laps.) My question is: How much time it takes to do 10 laps? What I will keep the same is: * The weight of the plasticine (55g) * The shape of the object (sphere) * The angle of where I started to throw the plasticine (45º) My prediction is: When I change the length of the string of the pendulum I think what will happen to the laps of the pendulum is that as longer the string the less laps will the pendulum do. This is because the pendulum will take more time to return to its initial point, for the reason that it is a longer distance to travel so it will take longer. Method 1. Make......
