The theme of personal struggles and journey in Thi Bui's novel "The best we could do" is significant. She describes by her memoir through immigration, family experience and emotional memory.
As an illustration of people in the boat, Bui wants the reader to pay attention to every detail. For example, on page 245, she shows a man with a paddle in a small boat with many refugee's desire to be safe in front of dangerous. Through my thinking the author creates the meaning of that difficult journey is they always wanting to be free. This relates to problems that are many immigrants only have a basic command of language and this can lead to difficulties in the classroom and elsewhere.
