Scholarship, Practice, and Leadership Essay

In any profession or discipline, the individual's success, both in terms of getting the job done and in being accorded credibility afterward, is directly related to that individual's ability to seek out and use the relevant and credible information from various literature sources. That is the ideal, but in actuality it has become the first rule of neophyte research to latch on to and use whatever resources come up in an internet search engine. “Unfortunately, a number of the resources that are available on the internet are amateur publications that have neither been peer reviewed nor even vetted through a subject matter expert”(Russell, 2009, p. 17). The internet became filled with “a vast host of information that was utterly outside the gate keeping process and which varied in quality from an erudite treatise by a world scholar to the musings of your Uncle Frank” (Russell, 2009, p. 5). The point of Russell's discussion is that the present generation has grown up and gone through primary and secondary education with the internet an ever-present entity that was unknown to the previous generation. Misunderstanding its power and capabilities, teachers unfamiliar with the internet actively encouraged their students to make extensive use of that resource for anything and everything. In essence, the current generation has been taught to use the internet as its first stop for information shopping when any form of research is required. This cautionary tale is repeated by both Russell and Turusheva along with their learned observations and suggestions for valuating information literacy in order to amend the situation. “Leaders are able to unleash the potential of people by aligning values, systems, structure, and strategy. Because leaders place a

Personal Knowledge Management : Who, What, Why, When, Where, How?

...Personal Knowledge Management : Who, What, Why, When, Where, How? Jason Frand and Carol Hixon December, 1999 Our students, who will spend most of their working lives in the 21 st century, will need to see the computer and related technologies as an extension of themselves, as a tool as important as the pencil or quill pen was for the last several hundred years. Fifteen years ago, few people knew what a personal computer was. Now personal computers are ubiquitous. With the proliferation of personal computers and linked computer networks, there has been an increase in the amount of information produced, as well as new avenues of finding the information. Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) attempts to utilize the computer to help the individual manage the information explosion in a meaningful way. What is personal knowledge management? It’s a system designed by individuals for their own personal use. Knowledge management has been described by Davenport and Prusak as a systematic attempt to create, gather, distribute, and use knowledge. Lethbridge characterizes it as the process of acquiring, representing, storing and manipulating the categorizations, characterizations and definitions of both things and their relationship. PKM, as conceived at the Anderson School, is a conceptual framework to organize and integrate information that we, as individuals, feel is important so that it becomes part of our personal knowledge base. It provides a strategy for transforming what might be random...

My Personal Goal

...Everyone should have personal goals that evolve around anything that needs to be accomplished. I set goals on a daily basis. One goal that I seem to have not truly focused on has been my college education. Considering all things, I decided I needed to focus on my college education. The first thing I needed to accomplish was to enroll in an institution for higher learning. Now that my enrollment is complete, I am an official student at the University enrolled in the undergraduate program for business management. As a student at the university, I now have to set personal goals so that I will be successful in my endeavors. My personal goals are to gain personal growth and development and graduate from my undergraduate program in business management with honors. After my completion of the undergraduate program I will then move on to a master's program. To accomplish my goal of personal growth and development, I will make sure that by the end of every course I take I will have a full understanding of the subject matter. This is where I will take advantage of the learning teams that are offered in conjunction with individual learning. The way I look at the learning teams is that they are there for me to learn and share experiences with my peers. If there is something that I do not fully understand, I can in turn go to my learning team for the answer. If I cannot get the answer from my team then I will go to the instructor. I will not stop until I have a full understanding of ...

Personal and Shared Knowledge

...Personal and Shared Knowledge Q and A 1. Personal knowledge depends on what the person himself or herself has felt. You most probably do not want to share personal knowledge as usually it is not meant for others to hear. An example of personal knowledge would be how you feel about something or it may even be the accident that you had a few years ago. Shared knowledge, meanwhile, is the opposite of personal knowledge in the sense that it is knowledge that you would most likely feel comfortable with sharing and more often than not, you work with others to share knowledge. An example of shared knowledge would be how a science paper needs to be processed by a number of people before it can be approved off. 2. An example of how shared knowledge could influence personal knowledge would be science itself. If, for example, our religion states that the sun revolves around the earth, then our perspective will change when we find out that the earth revolves around the sun due to science, which is basically shared knowledge influencing our personal knowledge. 3. An example of how personal knowledge could influence shared knowledge would be people doing their own research to help improve something, like for example, science. People who have done so in the past include Newton, Einstein etc. They all clearly stated what they believed which help science move forward many steps. 4. I feel that a mixture of both personal knowledge and shared knowledge are very important for...
