Personal Leadership Strength and Weakness Analysis
Leadership (SAT2) – Task 2, Part D
Course Mentor: Dwane Thomas
September 5, 2012
D-1. Strengths
One of the strengths that were reiterated more than once during my peer evaluation was the fact that I was able to communicate well. As the facilitator of my group, I was given feedback stating that I communicated “effectively,” had “meaningful ideas” and facilitated the group with a “great sense of direction.” I believe my strength of being able to communicate well with my team members is an asset that I can possess within a working environment.
Communication is a strong suite because it allows a person to not only understand situations, but also keep others aware as well. Within our group setting, by sending out a group email on a weekly basis to make the team aware of where we stand and what we have to do next, I was able to not only confirm for myself the timeline and goals we had to abide by, but also keep the team members on the same page as me. This act of communication would be tremendously helpful in a working environment because it shows a sense of direction, organizational skills, commitment to the group, and also participation within a team setting. Since in a working environment a person needs to be aware of a multitude of group settings (management team, co-workers, employees of other departments, associated agencies/clients of the company, etc.), facilitating communication is important for the completion of goals and tasks. Therefore, having the ability to properly and effectively communicate is a skill set that can be utilized in many areas of the work atmosphere, especially when working with other team members in order to keep focused on goals and keeping everyone on the same page.
D-2. Weaknesses One weakness that I can improve upon in the workplace would be to stay consistent with my role within a group or working environment even if other team members are lacking in their role. Sometimes it is easy to start of strong within a role, but when there is a lack of the same amount of vigor from other team members, it becomes easy to become deflated and start lacking in the enthusiasm that one started with. However, I need to keep in mind that just because other team members might not be as participative as expected, it does not mean that I should let that deter me from continuing with the role I was assigned and still being consistent with my efforts to abide by the duties that are expected of me within my role. During my peer evaluation, it was mentioned that I was inconsistent with sending out weekly reminders, and also that I started off strong in my role as a facilitator, but then started lacking in trying to facilitate for the whole team to discuss and respond to ideas and questions. I can take this feedback, and realize that in order to be a successful member of a team within a working environment, it is important to be consistent with my duties. When a team member starts off strong in their role, they set up a certain expectation within the group and then the group starts expecting the same sort of consistency throughout a task. It is important to realize that if I am sending out a weekly reminder to the group for the first couple of weeks, but then I trail off doing this due to lack in response, that does not reflect on just the team members that are not responding, but mostly reflects on the fact that I am not being consistent within my role. Therefore, by strengthening my weakness of inconsistency, I can become a more effective team member within any role I have within a team in a work environment.

But, generally, the influence of one person supporting others to achieve a common mission has been the theme.  Some recognize a leader simply as one who people follow, or one who monitors and directs others, and there are others who define leadership as unifying a group to achieve a common goal.  There have been studies that mesh attributes, functional behavior, power, visions, intelligence; the list goes on, as indicators for a good leader.  But one thing I found common with The Leadership Challenge and other excerpts that I have read on leadership was that the measure of how great a leader is, is the measure of the his or her......

Leadership

...an effective, moral, and efficient school leader? Over the last few years at MSUM I have learned what it takes to have strong leadership in a school. My philosophy of leadership has many components which have been derived from my various classes and readings in the educational leadership program. Leadership in my eyes is a combination of having an open mind, shared vision, strong collaboration, lifelong learner, and a willingness to take risks. I feel that I have come a long way in all of those areas of leadership. How we interact and work with one another leads to success in anything. Admiral Arleigh A. Burke has a quote about leadership that I feel is a clear picture of what exactly leadership is, "leadership is understanding people and involving them to help you do a job. That takes all of the good characteristics, like integrity, dedication of purpose, selflessness, knowledge, skill, implacability, as well as determination not to accept failure." For any leadership to be effective there must be a focused and shared vision that everyone is a part of. The vision is one of the most crucial pieces for leadership to follow because it determines how we make decisions. Decisions that are made without following the vision can not only hurt the school, but lead to chaos in the school system. Having a clear vision will help leadership and other stakeholders determine goals and provide direction for the school. In conjuncture with that I feel it is a......

The Dna of Disruptive Innovators

...will be discussing two leadership models that support innovation, Democratic/Participative and Transformational. The discovery and delivery skills brought forth by the authors of The Innovator’s DNA will follow the discussion on leadership models. Lastly the writer’s strengths and weaknesses of being innovative will be analyzed. Innovation Supported Leadership Models Each leadership model has a different approach. The leadership models that this researcher found to be the most in-line with innovation are Demographic/Participative Leaders and Transformational Leaders. Democratic/Participative Democratic leaders are also known as participative leaders. Both descriptions fit this model. This type of leader requires participation from a team of players with the ultimate decision on the leader. This leader asks for input and then will study the ideas to make the final decision. By using the team’s input the players feel more satisfied and valuable, as well as a sense of ownership (Loiseau, 2015). The reaction to change is more positive by the team players. The players feel this way because they were consulted and contributed in the initial decision making process (Loiseau, 2015). There is a drawback to this leadership model. It is more difficult to include the team when decisions need to be made right now (Loiseau, 2015). Transformational leaders do not seem to have this issue. Transformational Leaders The concept of Transformational Leadership was introduced in......

Leadership Plan

...gaillard@hec.edu +33 6 08 32 79 48 LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PLAN This paper seeks to elaborate my personal leadership development plan in the objective I have to continuously learn, grow and meet new challenges. Therefore, my approach is to first start from the skills audit outcome provided by the powerful multi source assessments and tools the EMBA program offered me the chance to fill up, giving me feedback on where I am today. Then, it consists of defining the gap with where I want to be tomorrow, and identifying which new skills are the best insurance I can get for an uncertain future, thus pushing my boundaries. Finally, it will deal with what “on-the-job” action plan I need to implement to face my leadership challenges and how I will make it happen. I – Where am I today? What are my current leadership skills and style? My personal life story provides the context for my professional and life experiences which have obviously shape my personality characteristics and style, even if they are not all definitive. Some of them are conscious, others are sub-conscious. The journey to leadership development begins with understanding myself well enough to be self-aware of the main gifts, strengths and specificities I can capitalize on and on which weaknesses I have to improve. For this purpose, and in the context of the Executive MBA program I have decided to undertake, I have filled in several key assessments such as Leadership Versatile Index (LVI),......

Second, I will compare and contrast my leadership style with some of the other theories for leadership styles. In this regard, I will provide some examples and will explain how I would act under specific circumstances. Third, I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of my personal leadership and will also identify jobs within my organization that would fit well with my style. Benefit of Self Evaluation as It Relate to Leadership

...The benefits of self-evaluation as it relates to leaders today When talking about LEAN, leadership is a key component of change and driving implementation.  The article below, written as part of my MBA in Leadership and Sustainability with Robert Kennedy College & The University of Cumbria, examines the benefits of self-evaluation for leaders. Self-evaluation or “self-leadership” (Runn, 2011) forms a critical part of a leaders repertoire and some key blocks of the foundation for this persons leadership.  If someone can ultimately say that they fully understand themselves, they will find it much easier to understand others around them. This however requires some strong discipline from the leader, to continuously self-evaluate and aim for continuous improvement.  There are some key questions that the leader needs to ask themselves and truthfully answer to gage where they are at. 1.      Do as you preach If a leader makes a statement about what he or she will be doing, they need to take ownership and answer on the basis whether they actually did as they said.  When a leader expects others to follow suit, they need to set the standards. 2.      Change is ok If a change of direction was required from the initial target, that is ok, as long as the leader can clearly identify why it was different to the planned path, and explain that in simple terms. The two points above can be broken into many individual questions that form the basis of a......

Leaders Never Quit

...Denis Tocci JWI 510: Leadership in the 21st Century 7/26/2015 Abstract In today’s world, leadership have many shapes, colors, and forms to the way it’s applied. Throughout time, researchers have explored different methodologies on ways leaders perform. Daniel Goleman’s (2000) uses a format of six different styles that are interchangeable depending upon the climate. Others direct one towards qualities and emotional behaviors to get effective results. Whether it’s a style, quality, or emotional behavior, these methods have confirmed success in professional and personal atmospheres, analyzing strengths and weaknesses forms new ideas and approaches towards future leadership endeavors. I have reviewed some of my past experiences and applied Jack Welch’s principles and rules, concluding ways to handle situations implementing my leadership style, quality, and emotional behavior. The question now is “What works for you?” Keywords: styles, qualities, emotional behaviors Introduction What is a leader and how does he or she lead to fulfil a goal? This question is what researchers have been trying to discover for decades. There’s no one answer to identify how a leader achieves success. They consist of many attributes that differ between individuals. One leadership style can be motivating while another can consist of a bull that wants things done one way. Though they are so opposite both can have successful ending results. By identifying the different aspects of leadership, it help to......
